Book excerpt: "It would make a beautiful ruin." Eero Saarinen Terminal 5 was a group show curated by Rachel K. Ward at Eero Saarinen's landmark 1962 TWA Terminal at JFK Airport. Originally scheduled to run from 28 September 2004 - 31 January 2005, the Port Authority closed the exhibition after the "controversial" opening night party. Initiated as a form of "dedication to the building" the exhibition explored themes drawn from the history and nature of travel, and responded to the significance of the architecture itself. The catalogue is a secondary site for participating artists, writers and critics to engage with ideas raised by the exhibition and air travel. Designed by David Reinfurt, ORG, it is divided into three sections: architectural history, exhibition information, and air travel related essays, and balances extensive visual material related to the site and the exhibition with critical and historical texts. The show included works by Vanessa Beecroft, Douglas Coupland, Kendell Geers, Dan Graham, Toland Grinnell, Fabrice Gygi, Mark Handforth, Jenny Holzer, Ryoji Ikeda, Just Another Rich Kid, Matthieu Laurette, Jonas Mekas, Aleksandra Mir, Jonathan Monk, Tom Sachs, Anri Sala, Tobias Wong, et al. Contributors Paul Andreu, J.G. Ballard, Glenn O'Brien, Nicolas Bourriaud, Douglas Coupland, Ben Davis, Wendy Dorsett, Dave Eggers, Norman Foster, Dan Graham, Erin Hogan, Ana Honingman, J.T. LeRoy, Hesse McGraw, Jonas Mekas, David Pascoe, Nina Rappaport, Susan Saarinen, Brian Sholis, Robert Smithson, Marc-Olivier Wahler, Andrew Lee Walker, Rachel K. Ward, Lori Waxman, et al.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the inside track on the making of Terminal 5: the courage, the ground-breaking management thinking and the many lessons learnt from the leaders, the client and integrated supply chain teams, - involving over 50,000 people from 20,000 companies - which led to the successful delivery of this mega project on time, on budget, and safely. Love or hate Heathrow we can’t ignore it! An economic power house for the UK, 155,000 earn their living from it and 68 million of us pass through it each year. Two decades of the planning, design, construction and opening of Terminal 5 has resulted in a gateway that Heathrow can be proud of. Faced with the risk of opening a year late, being a billion overspent, since Sir John Egan in the early 1990s, BAA, stakeholders and supplier partners have been grappling with Terminal 5`s challenges. The result? £4.3 billion of design and construction delivered on time, to budget and safely is to be commended given the industry statistics but the acid test will now be the quality of the 30 million passengers experience and the operating costs that have been left to stand the test of time. Sharon Doherty is HR and organisational effectiveness director for Heathrow airport and Terminal 5. Sharon has previously worked in consultancy, financial services and retail. Her specialism is people and change. 2002 to the end 2007 she was accountable for the approach to people management and organisational change on Terminal 5.

Book excerpt: BAA opened Heathrow's fifth terminal for business on 27 March, after six years of construction at a cost of £4.3bn, on time and within budget. Passengers had been promised a "calmer, smoother, simpler airport experience". Multiple problems, however, meant that on the first day of operation alone, 36,584 passengers were frustrated by the 'Heathrow hassle' that Terminal 5 (T5) had been designed to eliminate. Problems were experienced with the baggage system, car parking, security searches and aspects of the building itself. When the baggage system failed, luggage piled up to such an extent that it was transported by road to be sorted off-site. According to British Airways, 23,205 bags required manual sorting before being returned to their owners. The Committee finds that most of these problems were caused by one of two main factors: insufficient communication between owner and operator, and poor staff training and system testing. The Committee was pleased to find that steps were being taken at all levels to address the problems at the source of T5's problems, and BAA, British Airways and the union Unite are working together to make Terminal 5 a success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by a senior marketer with over thirty years experience of using marketing techniques and concepts, sets out to describe, contextualize and rate them. Its prime emphasis is on understanding their status so that they can be used to direct the use of shareholder funds effectively. Its conclusion is that seasoned professionals must use their judgement about when and how to use them, but they also need to understand them in depth if they are going to make well-rounded, effective investment decisions. Above all it asks: “how useful and relevant is this concept? Will it improve decision making? Does the damn thing have any credibility and does it work?” “This book combines a rigorous review of a wide range of marketing concepts with many practical examples and case studies. It can be read or dipped into both by seasoned professionals and by those just embarking on their marketing career.” Sir Paul Judge, President, Chartered Institute of Marketing “Laurie Young casts an experienced and skeptical eye on many cherished marketing concepts and techniques. He provides an antidote to the tendency to adopt them without understanding their limitations and possibilities.” Professor George Day, The Wharton School, Chairman of the American Marketing Association “Laurie Young has produced nothing less than the A-Z of marketing. He has journeyed far and wide mapping out hundreds of business, marketing and communications models to produce an extremely useful industry atlas. Certainly it will find a well-thumbed home on my bookshelf.” Hamish Pringle, Director General, Institute of Practitioners in Advertising “This book is much needed by marketing. Its value is in challenging concepts, some of which have been the accepted norm for a long time. But as this book shows, some of these may no longer be relevant and appropriate for marketers in today’s consumer environment.” Mike Johnston, CEO, Dairy Council of Northern Ireland and former Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing “Senior marketers, like those who make up the membership of the Marketing Society, hone the methods and techniques they favour as their career develops. Laurie Young clearly did that and an experienced voice shines through this critique. It is heartening to find that so many concepts have a long history of producing real value for businesses but alarming to find so many of the theorists’ favourites to be so groundless.” Hugh Burkitt, CEO, The Marketing Society

Book excerpt: An international group of authors have produced an overview of the progress made in the medicinal chemistry of compounds (selectively) acting at serotonin receptors or serotonin transporters either as agonists, partial agonists or antagonists.Structure - affinity relationships and structure - activity relationships of agonists, partial agonists, and antagonists of 5-HT receptors and uptake sites, are discussed. Structure, sequence homology and the effect of site-directed mutations of 5-HT receptors and the reuptake site on the binding of ligands show the tremendous impact of molecular biology on medicinal chemistry research. Also discussed is the pharmacology and (potential) clinical applications of ligands for the 5-HT receptors and the reuptake site. By developing elegant techniques of cloning and expression of serotonin receptor subtypes, their mutants and chimeras, a unique opportunity was offered to study the binding mode of serotoninergic ligands to their receptors and transporters. The distribution, structure and homologies of serotonin receptor subtypes and the structure of the serotonin transporter are also taken into account. The (potential) therapeutic applications of ligands of the different subtypes are described.Altogether an excellent addition to the Pharmacochemical Library series.

Some studies show that more than half of all large-scale project fail either fail completely, or at least miss targeted budget and scheduling goals. These failures cost organizations time, money, and labor. Project Recovery offers wise guidance and real-world best practices for saving failed projects and recovering as much value as possible from the wreckage. Since failing project cannot be managed using the same lifecycle phases employed with succeeding projects, most project management professionals are unprepared to tackle the challenge of project recovery. This book presents valuable case studies and a recovery project lifecycle to help project managers identify and respond effectively to a troubled project. Includes case studies and best practices for saving failing projects or recovering projects that have already failed Written by experience project manager Howard Kerzner, the author of Project Management Best Practices, Third Edition Features proven techniques for performing project health checks and determining the degree of failure and the recovery options available Includes a new recovery lifecycle that includes phases and checklists for turning around failing projects With comprehensive case studies, checklists, worksheets, and cross listings to the appropriate project management body of knowledge, Project Recovery offers a much needed lifeline for managers facing the specter of failure.
