Book Synopsis The Art of Nation-Building by : H.V. Nelles
Download or read book The Art of Nation-Building written by H.V. Nelles and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-12-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1908 Canada celebrated its 300th anniversary – the tercentenary of Champlain's founding of Quebec City. In two glorious weeks of parades, ceremonies, balls, and festivities, Canadians commemorated their history in a spectacle that would not be surpassed until the centennial of 1967. The climax of the 1908 celebration was an historical pageant in which 4000 sumptuously costumed citizens re-enacted classic events in Canada's history. Canada's leading painters were also there to capture these memorable scenes for posterity. The past was being celebrated, but with the present and the future in mind. In The Art of Nation-Building, H.V. Nelles uses contemporary literary techniques to convey the scope, colour, and intensity of the tercentenary from various perspectives. Drawing on the intimate diaries and letters of leading social and political figures, he leads us behind the scenes, disclosing the politics of memory, the theatrics of history, and the making of a modern monarchy. Nelles reveals what we actually do when we commemorate, how we use the past, and the multivocal character of mass celebration This richly illustrated, thought-provoking interpretation of public celebrations offers a novel perspective on Quebec and on the upcoming celebration of the millennium. Winner of two prestigious prizes: the Sir John A. Macdonald Prize (CHA) and the Prix Lionel-Groulx (IHAF).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Nottingham Lots began in 1701 after William Penn was told by Lord Talbot of Maryland, that Pennsylvania could settle as far as the fall waters of the Susquehanna go down hill. This area is now located in Northern Cecil County, Maryland and Southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. This book is telling the history of the Nottingham Lots and the genealogy of each of the original sixteen settlers. The Tercentenary celebration of the Nottingham Lots held in September 2001, at the Brick Meetinghouse in Calvert, Maryland, was a successful two day affair. It is likely this was the first time the meetinghouse was crowded for nearly a century."

This book was released on 2018-05-14 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the three hundredth anniversary of the birth of Thomas Chippendale, England’s most famous cabinetmaker, this issue of the Bulletin addresses the history of Chippendale works at The Met. Morrison H. Heckscher recounts the designer’s meteoric rise from rural obscurity to the heights of the London luxury trade, crediting that remarkable success to the publication of the Chippendale Director, an instructive book on furniture design and ornament. The text analyzes the Museum’s rare collection of drawings by Chippendale, revealing a gifted and highly imaginative designer who mastered what today would be called branding. Illustrating a wide selection of the Director drawings alongside furniture inspired by the Director or actually made in Chippendale’s shop, this Bulletin features works of art that attest to the museum’s century-long infatuation with drawing, prints, books, and furniture in the Chippendale style.

Book Synopsis McCormick of Rutgers by : Michael J. Birkner
Download or read book McCormick of Rutgers written by Michael J. Birkner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard P. McCormick made his mark as an innovative student of American party politics, as well as the most influential interpreter of New Jersey history. A distinguished teacher, scholar, and public historian, McCormick revitalized a venerable but dormant state historical society. Later, he used notable anniversaries, such as the Bicentennial of the American Revolution and the Tercentenary of New Jersey's founding, as vehicles to bring history to schools and the general public. He also helped create a state historical agency, the New Jersey Historical Commission, to promote New Jersey's past and preserve its historic treasures. Birkner describes McCormick's life and times. He looks at McCormick's scholarly apprenticeship, the origins of his interest in a new political history, and his contributions to the study of American politics before the Civil War. McCormick's concern for elucidating political machinery was fused with a fundamental skepticism about American democracy as run by and for the people. Through use of oral history, McCormick tells his own story. Then, through their exchanges, Birkner challenges some of McCormick's scholarly arguments and elicits responses that help to shed light on his subject's theory of politics.
