Book excerpt: Transactional analysis is growing in popularity as an approach to psychotherapy, and this book provides an in-depth, comprehensive model of theory and practice. Transactional Analysis: A Relational Perspective presents a relational model of psychotherapy which reflects the theoretical and methodological changes that have been evolving over recent years. In this book, Helena Hargaden and Charlotte Sills tell the story of their model through case history, theory and diagram illustrating how the unconscious process comes to life in the consulting room. Their relational theory and applied methodology of transactional analysis makes it possible to chart realms of uncertainty and the unknown, (deconfusion of the Child ego state), with theoretical assistance. Transactional Analysis: A Relational Perspective covers: * the approach * the dynamics of the relationship * therapeutic transactions * wider implications. It looks at the whole therapeutic relationship, from the establishment of the working alliance, to the terminating of therapy and beyond. It will be of great interest to postgraduates and professionals in the field of psychotherapy.

At a time when short-term therapy is increasingly dominant as a form of practice, Transactional Analysis Approaches to Brief Therapy provides an insightful guide which both informs and challenges. Rather than a single theory, TA has developed as a group of four schools which share a common philosophy, but place different emphasis on what occurs during the therapeutic process. Written by therapists at the leading edge of developments in TA, the book presents and differentiates each of these four approaches. Through transcripts and commentaries, it shows how theory applies to practice, for exampl

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contextual Transactional Analysis: The Inseparability of Self and World offers a novel and comprehensive reworking of key concepts in transactional analysis, offering insight into the causes of psychological distress and closing the gap between training and clinical practice. By providing a bigger picture – as much sociological as psychological – of what it means to be human, the book makes an essential contribution to current debates about how best to account for and work with the social and cultural dimensions of client experience. James M. Sedgwick captures the ongoing importance of what happens around us and the distinctive kinds of psychological distress that arise from persistent and pervasive environmental disadvantage. Beginning with a view of people as always situated and socialised, the book highlights the many ways that the world always and everywhere constrains or enables thought and action. Ranging through ideas about the kinds of contextual conditions which might make psychological distress more likely and illuminating the complex relationship between socialisation and autonomy, the book suggests what the implications of these conclusions might be for clinical understanding and practice. Sedgwick’s insightful and compassionate work revises the theoretical framework, fills a current gap in the clinical literature and points the way to greater practitioner efficacy. Contextual Transactional Analysis will be an insightful addition to the literature for transactional analysts in practice and in training, for professionals interested in the theory and practice of transactional analysis and anyone seeking to understand the contribution of context to psychological distress. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of original 1961 edition. Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy by Eric Berne, M.D. introduced psychiatrists and analysts to a new way of understanding the motivations and social interactions of their clients and patients. By using this model, Berne believed that therapists could help their patients to better understand themselves and improve their relationships and their lives. Canadian-born psychiatrist Eric Berne (b. May 10, 1910 - d. July 15, 1970) spent his early career working with patients in sanitariums before serving as a psychiatrist in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he set up a private practice, in addition to conducting his own research and serving as a psychiatrist at the Veterans Administration and Mental Hygiene Clinic in San Francisco. After being denied admittance to the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute in 1956, Berne was spurred to make his own mark on the field. He wrote several papers that year as he developed his theories, and he was invited to present his article "Transactional Analysis: A New and Effective Group Therapy" to the Western Regional Meeting of the American Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles in 1957. The next step was to put these ideas down into a book - 1961's Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy. Berne's theory, while built on a foundation of Freudian principles, was clearly different. Where Freudian psychoanalysts focused on the balance between the emotional id, rational ego, and moral superego that make up one's personality, Berne instead assigned interpersonal relationships to the three ego-states of his clients - the Parent, Adult, and Child inside each. The way we interact with each other, Berne proposed, influences which of our three ego-states is prominent at any given time. Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy begins by identifying these ego-states and explaining how to diagnose them. It then explores the way social intercourse (called transactions) can stimulate the different ego-states. Common social interactions are described in the language of games - different predictable patterns of communication that may appear normal on the surface, but conceal tension and self-serving - or self-destructive - motives beneath. Often counterproductive, these games indulge one of our ego-states and can damage our mental well-being and relationships. An example of a game is called, "Why Don't You...Yes, But." In this game, one person makes suggestions in order to solve a person's problem, and the other rejects each with a "Yes, but..." type statement. Instead of an Adult-Adult interaction, with one offering reasoned suggestions and the other engaging in a meaningful dialogue, the suggester takes on a Parental role of problem-solver, and the other that of an attention-seeking Child who wants reassurance, not a solution. One of the most important aspects of transactional analysis is the contract. This tool is an agreement made by both client and therapist that the client will work on specific changes to achieve their desired outcome. Although some in the psychoanalytic community ignored Berne's work, many therapists used his ideas with their own clients. His later works include A Layman's Guide to Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis, Games People Play, and What Do You Say After You Say Hello?, published in 1975 after Berne's death. Berne's development of transactional analysis was a major influence on Thomas Harris's 1967 New York Times bestseller I'm OK - You're OK, which introduced many laypeople to the concept of the Parent-Adult-Child model.

Book excerpt: This innovative book describes the original essence particular to the human species and details the steps necessary to help re-establish this essence, in cases when it has deteriorated, in a therapeutic group context of solidarity and closeness. Disappointment in primary relationships particularly triggers the deterioration of self-offering, an initially expansive and trusting disposition to affectivity and love. People suffer when, like any fragile and delicate living being early in life, they fail to evolve according to the nature of their species. Therapeutic work is therefore described as mainly oriented to reactivate in a group, a new welcoming family, the original natural drives with new permissions, new trials and new joyful experiences. The book contains the methods and techniques routinely used by the author and two case studies, faithfully transcribed and commented on, particularly for the reactivation of the affective drive. Revitatlization Through Transactional Analysis Group Treatment is an insightful addition to the literature for transactional analysts in practice and in training, for professionals interested in the theory and practice of transactional analysis. Piccinino writes in a compelling manner allowing for the content to be accessible to anyone seeking to understand human processes and wellbeing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intensive Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy: An Integrated Model (ITAP) introduces a new approach of psychotherapy. Based on psychodynamic foundations, the ITAP integrates the most recent trends in short-term dynamic psychotherapy and Transactional Analysis. This book develops an innovative, clear and complete clinical model of ITAP, and introduces the reader, step-by-step, to the theoretical basis underlying the technique of this intervention. The authors introduce the therapeutic procedure by bringing together the theory with brief clinical examples, thereby demonstrating the attitude of the intense therapist as well as which theoretical pathways to take to progress with the patient. In addition to the modulation of the technique based on the level of the patient's suffering, there is also a systematic examination of which cases should be treated with ITAP, and in what way. Intensive Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy is a therapy which can be easily used by all therapists, and this book will be of great interest to Transactional Analysis therapists and other therapists interested in Transactional Analysis and short-term dynamic psychotherapy.
