ABSTRACT Currently we have an economic system based on capitalism, in which much of society lives getting worse, due to unemployment, inequality and economic crises. In this very hopeless and competitive context plays a fundamental role the qualification of human labor, which seems indispensable for access to a better life. We shall see what vision this has in Marx's theory of value, which is based on his fetishistic theory of commodity. Marx asserts that commodities acquire value at the moment they are traded in the market. In addition, due to the density of the concept of labor we will see that nuances and guidelines give Marx to labor, especially complex and simple labor. For Marx, complex labor is nothing more than simple multiplied labor. This theory of value and the vision of complex and simple labor has undergone many criticisms, which will lead to an interesting debate. Keywords: value; qualification; simple labor; complex labor; reduction of labor.

First, it analyses the concept of economic crises within economic theory, showing the various theoretical foundations and controversies amongst different schools of economic thought. Second, it presents an empirical analysis of the Great Recession in Spain, addressing the growth period of 1995 to 2007-08, the subsequent depression until 2013-14 and the recovery that followed. It also shows the way in which the inner contradictions of capital manifests itself in an European peripheral economy under a real estate bubble, emphasizing the role of the Spanish economy in European capitalism. This theoretical and empirical heterodox approach will be of interest to students and scholars in political economy, and those with an interest in the Eurozone.
