Book Synopsis Units, Symbols, and Terminology for Plant Physiology by : Frank B. Salisbury
Download or read book Units, Symbols, and Terminology for Plant Physiology written by Frank B. Salisbury and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-10-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a beginning toward a consensus on units, symbols, and terminology in the plant sciences. Written by 27 specialists and reviewed by several others, each discussion is condensed for easy reference, but still thorough enough to answer virtually any question concerning plant terminology. Principles are outlined and covered in readable text. Some chapters include formulas and definitions of specialized terms, while others include recommendations for suitable units. The appendices offer guidelines on presenting scientific data, such as principles of grammar, oral and poster presentations, and reporting on data from experiments that utilized growth chambers. Anyone involved in the plant sciences, particularly plant physiology, will find this an invaluable reference.
Book Synopsis Commentaries in Plant Science by : Harry Smith
Download or read book Commentaries in Plant Science written by Harry Smith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commentaries in Plant Science, Volume 2 is a collection of papers that reviews developments in the pure and applied science of plants. One paper discusses the role of supercooling in the winter survival mechanism of and ecological distribution of many plant communities. Another paper evaluates the Cholodny-Went theory of shoot geotropism that there is strong evidence in auxin redistribution occurring in a rapid manner to cause geotropic curvature. The magnitude of auxin redistribution is too rare to cause differential growth. Some insect pests have specific nutritional requirements and well-developed mechanisms for selecting their plant host. One paper enumerates the benefits of using insect-resistant host plant varieties, such as the non-incurrence of extra costs, these are environmentally safe, and are compatible with most other methods of pest control. Another paper discusses the nature and possible genetic manipulation of a complex bacteria, the actinomycetes, as well as its role as antibiotic producer. Another paper examines the nature of seed storage proteins and of the cellular processes that are related in their synthesis and deposition especially in cereals and legume. This collection is suitable for botanists, genecologists, taxonomists, biologists, and investigators whose works involve cell membrane research.

Book Synopsis Plant Nutrition - Physiology and Applications by : M.L. Van Beusichem

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exactly 35 years after the first Colloquium was held, the Eleventh International Plant Nutrition Colloquium took place from 30 July to 4 August 1989 in Wageningen, The Netherlands. Although impressive progress has been made during the past decades in our understanding of the mechanisms of uptake, distribution and assimilation of nutrients in relation to crop yield and quality, there are still significant gaps in our insight into many fundamental aspects of plant mineral nutrition and related metabolic processes. In spite of improved knowledge of nutrient requirements of crops and improved fertilizer application strategies, the world population remains to be burdened with an enormous shortage of plant products for food, timber, fuel, shelter, and other purposes. The main challenge facing the plant nutrition research community is to at least alleviate the increasing world-wide need for applying scientific knowledge to practical problems in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. It is therefore felt by many scientists that the Plant Nutrition Colloquia, which are intended to bring together scientists and to integrate knowledge and approaches acquired in plant physiology, biochemis try, soil science, agronomy and related disciplines, have indeed made a significant contribution to the advancement of our knowledge and understanding in this vital and interdisciplinary field of agrobiology. About 260 scientists from 40 nations attended the Colloquium in Wageningen.
