Book Synopsis An Inconvenient Cop by : Edwin Raymond
Download or read book An Inconvenient Cop written by Edwin Raymond and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “With illuminating, vivid, and meticulous prose, Edwin Raymond delivers an extraordinary exposé on policing in America . . . An essential, exceptional work.” —Toluse Olorunnipa, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of His Name Is George Floyd From the highest-ranking whistleblower in NYPD history, a gripping insider look at the complexities of modern policing and the urgent need for reform Over his decade and a half with the New York Police Department, Edwin Raymond consistently exposed the dark underbelly of modern policing, becoming the highest-ranking whistleblower in the history of the force and one of the country’s leading voices against police injustice. Offering a rare, often shocking view of American policing, An Inconvenient Cop pulls back the curtain on the many flaws woven into the NYPD’s training, data, and practices, which have since been repackaged and repurposed by police departments across the country. Gravitating toward law enforcement in the hope of being a positive influence in his community, Raymond quickly learned that the problem with policing is a lot deeper than merely “a few bad apples”—the entire mechanism is set up to ensure that racial profiling is rewarded, and there are weighty consequences for cops who don’t play along. Struggling with the moral dilemma of policing impartially while witnessing his fellow officers go with the flow, Raymond’s journey takes him to the precipice of personal and professional ruin. Yet, through it all, he remains steadfast in his commitment to justice and his belief in the potential for change. At once revelatory and galvanizing, An Inconvenient Cop courageously bears witness to and exposes institutional violence. It presents a vision of radical hope and makes the case for a world in which the police’s responsibility is not to arrest numbers but to the people.

Though my uncle, Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, claims that he is the true father since he abducted me from my home, betrayed, and defiled me. And now he has branded my guards as a threat to my unborn children. Bearing an heir has placed me halfway to my aunt’s throne, that much closer to my reign over the Unseelie Court–and well ahead of her son, my cousin Cel, in this race. Now I must stay alive to see my children born and claim my place as queen. But not all in faerie are pleased with the news, and conspirators from every court in the realm plot against me and mine. They seek to strip my guards, my lovers, from me by poisoned word or cold steel. But I still have supporters, and even friends, among the goblins and the sluagh, who will stand by me. I am Meredith Nic Essus, and those who would defy and destroy me are destined to pay a terrible price–for I am truly my father’s daughter. To protect what is mine, I will sacrifice anything–even if it means waging a great battle against my darkest enemies and making the most momentous decision ever made as princess of faerie.
Book Synopsis The Horror of Police by : Travis Linnemann
Download or read book The Horror of Police written by Travis Linnemann and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmasks the horrors of a social order reproduced and maintained by the violence of police Year after year the crisis churns: graft and corruption, violence and murder, riot cops and armored vehicles claim city streets. Despite promises of reform, police operate with impunity, unaccountable to law. In The Horror of Police, Travis Linnemann asks why, with this open record of violence and corruption, policing remains for so many the best, perhaps only means of security in an insecure world. Drawing on the language and texts of horror fiction, Linnemann recasts the police not only as self-proclaimed “monster fighters” but as monsters themselves, a terrifying force set loose in the world. Purposefully misreading a collection of everyday police stories (TV cop dramas, detective fiction, news media accounts, the direct words of police) not as morality tales of innocence avenged and order restored but as horror, Linnemann reveals the monstrous violence at the heart of liberal social order. The Horror of Police shows that police violence is not a deviation but rather a deliberate and permanent fixture of U.S. “law and order.” Only when viewed through the refracted motif of horror stories, Linnemann argues, can we begin to reckon the limits of police and imagine a world without them.

To see her mission through, the embittered wannabe hermit is forced to associate with “those treacherous simians” (a.k.a. human beings) and soon becomes the nucleus of a small group of equally dysfunctional young women. As their quest takes them from the corpse-strewn streets of suburbia to the red-litten alleys of a city ablaze with unholy fire, from a harpy-besieged National Guard base to an amusement park turned ogre-run death camp, the women are forced to contend with both demons within and monsters without, and Fay finds herself forming bonds with her allies that may prove too strong for even her prickly soul to resist. If, that is, she—and they—can stay alive that long.

A substance called “the pink blob slime jelly orange sand” was the devil's powerful venom, and all the demons have it. Some of the fourteen demons have siblings. Book Synopsis Ghost Criminology by : Michael Fiddler
Download or read book Ghost Criminology written by Michael Fiddler and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bringing together prominent early contributions from this emergent perspective, the volume traces the origins, theory and methodology of a nascent ghost criminology. From the powers of exorcism and erasure marshaled by state agents, street-level struggles over memorialization and memory, to the lingering violence of crime scenes and the ghostly traces of outlaw artists, Ghost Criminology is a book attuned to that which is well-theorized in other disciplines-the spectral, hauntological, apparitional. Each of the writers assembled here shares, as Mark Fisher (2017) put it, a fascination for the outside, "that which lies beyond standard perception, cognition and experience." As such, this collection uses cutting-edge social and cultural theory to tangle with some of criminology's most stubborn revenants-the politics of criminalization, the commodification of crime and violence, the haunting power of the image, as well as the unheard and disregarded cries of the dead"--
