Tension fatigue tests were conducted on quasi-isotropic and orthotropic glass epoxy, graphite epoxy, and glass/graphite epoxy hybrid laminates. Edge delamination onset data were used to generate plots of strain energy release rate as a function of cycles to delamination onset. These plots were then used along with strain energy release rate analyses of delaminations initiating at matrix cracks to predict local delamination onset. Stiffness loss was measured experimentally to account for the accumulation of matrix cracks and for delamination growth. Fatigue failure was predicted by comparing the increase in global strain resulting from stiffness loss to the decrease in laminate failure strain resulting from delaminations forming at matrix cracks through the laminate thickness. Good agreement between measured and predicted lives indicated that the through-thickness damage accumulation model can accurately describe fatigue failure for laminates where the delamination onset behavior in fatigue is well characterized, and stiffness loss can be monitored in real time to account for damage growth. Book excerpt: Fatigue Life Prediction of Composites and Composite Structures, Second Edition, is a comprehensive review of fatigue damage and fatigue life modeling and prediction methodologies for composites and their use in practice. In this new edition, existing chapters are fully updated, while new chapters are introduced to cover the most recent developments in the field. The use of composites is growing in structural applications in many industries, including aerospace, marine, wind turbine and civil engineering. However, there are uncertainties about their long-term performance, including performance issues relating to cyclic fatigue loading that hinder the adoption of a commonly accepted credible fatigue design methodology for the life prediction of composite engineering structures. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, this book is a standard reference for industry professionals and researchers alike. Examines past, present and future trends associated with the fatigue life prediction of composite materials and structures Assesses novel computational methods for fatigue life modeling and prediction of composite materials under constant amplitude loading Covers a wide range of techniques for predicting fatigue, including their theoretical background and practical applications Addresses new topics and covers contemporary research developments in the field

Book excerpt: Fatigue has long been recognized as a mechanism that can provoke catastrophic material failure in structural applications and researchers are now turning to the development of prediction tools in order to reduce the cost of determining design criteria for any new material. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites explains these highly scientific subjects in a simple yet thorough way. Fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced composite materials and structural components is described through the presentation of numerous experimental results. Many examples help the reader to visualize the failure modes of laminated composite materials and structural adhesively bonded joints. Theoretical models, based on these experimental data, are demonstrated and their capacity for fatigue life modeling and prediction is thoroughly assessed. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites gives the reader the opportunity to learn about methods for modeling the fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced composites, about statistical analysis of experimental data, and about theories for life prediction under loading patterns that produce multiaxial fatigue stress states. The authors combine these theories to establish a complete design process that is able to predict fatigue life of fiber-reinforced composites under multiaxial, variable amplitude stress states. A classic design methodology is presented for demonstration and theoretical predictions are compared to experimental data from typical material systems used in the wind turbine rotor blade industry. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites also presents novel computational methods for modeling fatigue behavior of composite materials, such as artificial neural networks and genetic programming, as a promising alternative to the conventional methods. It is an ideal source of information for researchers and graduate students in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and materials science.

Book excerpt: A strength-based wearout model is presented for predicting the residual strength and life of composite laminates subjected to constant amplitude or two-stress level fatigue loadings. It is assumed that the laminate undergoes proportional loading, that its residual strength is a monotonically decreasing function of the number of loading cycles, and that the probability of failure after an arbitrary number of cycles may be represented by a two parameter Weibull function. The model also incorporates a "cycle mix factor" to account for the degradation of strength and life that may be associated with frequent changes in the stress amplitude of the loading. Experimental results from two-stress level loadings are used to evaluate the model's predictive capability for sequencing effects, as in a low-high or high-low test, and for cycle mix effects, as in a low-high-low-high repeating test. Good correlation between theory and experiment is obtained for all loadings and laminates studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue damage development in cross-ply laminates consists of transverse matrix cracking followed by longitudinal matrix cracking, local delaminations at crack intersections, and ultimately longitudinal fiber breakage of the load-carrying plies. Ultimate failure is determined by the manner in which the load is redistributed and transferred into the load-carrying plies. A model was developed for predicting fatigue life of cross-ply laminates which develop transverse cracking up to the characteristic damage state (CDS) level before fatigue failure. The fatigue life consists of two portions: the portion necessary to reach the CDS and the residual life after attainment of the CDS. A procedure for estimating the CDS life is described based on the relationship between residual stiffness and crack density and the stress-life (S-N) curve of the 90° lamina. The residual life after CDS was obtained by calculating the stress carried by the 0° plies and assuming that these plies within the damaged laminate behave like a 0° lamina under cyclic loading. Fatigue life predictions were in good agreement with experimental results for three graphite/epoxy cross-ply laminates.

Book excerpt: Analytical and experimental work is detailed which is required to predict delamination onset and growth in a curved cross plied composite laminate subjected to static and fatigue loads. The composite used was AS4/3501/6, graphite/epoxy. Analytically, a closed form stress analysis and 2-D and 3-D finite element analyses were conducted to determine the stress distribution in an undamaged curved laminate. The finite element analysis was also used to determine values of strain energy release rate at a delamination emanating from a matrix crack in a 90 deg ply. Experimentally, transverse tensile strength and fatigue life were determined from flat 90 deg coupons. The interlaminar tensile strength and fatigue life were determined from double cantilevered beam specimens. Cross plied curved laminates were tested statically and in fatigue to give a comparison to the analytical predictions. A comparison of the fracture mechanics life prediction technique and the strength based prediction technique is given. Martin, Roderick H. and Jackson, Wade C. Langley Research Center...

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive review of its kind on the long-term behaviour of composite materials and structures subjected to time variable mechanical, thermal, and chemical influences, a subject of critical importance to the design, development, and certification of high performance engineering structures. Specific topics examined include damage, damage characterization, and damage mechanics; fatigue testing and evaluation; fatigue behaviour of short and long fibre reinforced polymer and metal matrix materials; viscoelastic and moisture effects; delamination; statistical considerations; the modeling of cumulative damage development; and life prediction. The volume provides an extensive presentation of data, discussions, and comparisons on the behaviour of the major types of material systems in current use, as well as extensive analysis and modeling (including the first presentation of work not found elsewhere). The book will be of special interest to engineers concerned with reliability, maintainability, safety, certification, and damage tolerance; to materials developers concerned with making materials for long-term service, especially under severe loads and environments, and to lecturers, students, and researchers involved in material system design, performance, solid mechanics, fatigue, durability, and composite materials. The scope of the work extends from entry level material to the frontiers of the subject.
