Native peoples made their homes on its shores, living on the rich resources found in its waters and on its banks. Early Europeans and Americans recognized the river's importance in connecting east with west, although traveling the 40-mile stretch of rocky shoals between present-day Decatur and Florence was difficult. Overcoming that navigation challenge led to such 19th-century technological advances as the Tuscumbia, Courtland & Decatur Railroad--the first rail line west of the Appalachian Mountains--and the Muscle Shoals Canal. During the Civil War, skirmishes over control of factories, rail lines, and bridges characterized most military activity in northwest Alabama. In the 20th century, the construction of Wilson Dam and the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority improved the quality of life and increased economic opportunities in northwest Alabama. This book gathers images from the UNA Archives, the Alabama Department of Archives and History, University of Alabama, Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, The Lawrence County Archives, the Limestone County Archives, the Morgan County Archives, and the Library of Congress to tell the story of the Tennessee River in the northwest Alabama region.

Book excerpt: On the banks of the Tennessee River, below the once-formidable Muscle Shoals in northwest Alabama, sits the vibrant community of Florence. In the early 19th century, the Chickasaw Nation ceded lands to the US government, and in 1818 the Cypress Land Company held its first auction. The town grew quickly because of the efforts of the company's founders, which included Gen. John Coffee; John McKinley, who later sat on the US Supreme Court; and James Jackson, whose imported Thoroughbred horses became the bloodstock for some of Kentucky's finest racehorses. Schools, churches, hotels, and businesses soon filled the streets. For almost 200 years, the town of Florence has continued to grow, becoming home to the University of North Alabama and people like the "Father of the Blues," W.C. Handy; Maud Lindsay, who operated the first free kindergarten in the state; and four governors in Edward A. O'Neal, Emmett O'Neal, Robert M. Patton, and Hugh McVay.

Book Synopsis The Nickajack Project by : Tennessee Valley Authority
Download or read book The Nickajack Project written by Tennessee Valley Authority and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nickajack Dam was built by TVA in the mid-1960's at Tennessee River mile 424.7 to replace the old and leaking Hales Bar Dam located 6.4 miles upstream. The Nickajack site is located in Marion County, Tennessee, 18 air miles west of Chattanooga and about 2 miles northwest of the junction of the Alabama-Georgia-Tennessee State lines. Historically, the ancient Indian town of Nickajack was located at Shellmound, about a mile and a half upstream from the dam on the left bank of the reservoir. Nickajack was inhabited by the Cherokees as early as 1730. In 1784 the warlike Chief Dragging Canoe, who had earlier broken with the Cherokees, launched his marauding Chickamaugas from the town and used the nearby Nickajack Cave as a hideout. Later, during the Civil War, saltpeter was mined in the cave for Confederate gunpowder.

Download or read book Tuscumbia written by John L. McWilliams and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2012-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tuscumbia sits at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northwest Alabama in an area known as the Shoals. The area is rich with history beginning with the Native Americans who lived near the big spring for thousands of years. The European influence began with the Spanish under De Soto and the French, who had a trading post here in the 1700s. In the early 1800s, the African American influence became prevalent. Tuscumbia was America's first frontier railroad town with the incorporation of Tuscumbia Railroad Company and the home of "America's First Lady of Courage," Helen Keller. Today, Tuscumbia contains the oldest commercial buildings in the state of Alabama. Rail service was expanded in 1834 around the treacherous Muscle Shoals of the Tennessee River between Florence and Decatur, connecting steamboats at Tuscumbia Landing with Decatur, Alabama. Thousands of Native Americans--Cherokee, Creek, and Chickasaw--were removed from Tuscumbia to their new home in Indian Territory.
