Book excerpt: Las aportaciones realizadas por las áreas de investigación científica, creadas en todo el mundo para la conservación y restauración de bienes culturales, han sido productivas desde sus tímidos inicios a finales del siglo XVIII, con la aplicación de resultados puntuales obtenidos de forma empírica, hasta la progresiva conformación en los años 60 de un cuerpo teórico con objetivo específico y métodos propios. Hoy en día, es indudable para cualquier centro de conservación a escala internacional la necesidad de crear, apoyar y desarrollar la presencia de grupos de expertos en áreas científicas y técnicas para la salvaguarda del Patrimonio. Esto ha desembocado en la existencia y reconocimiento de un grupo de especialistas cuya actividad se encuentra consolidada profesionalmente en todos los países involucrados en la protección del patrimonio cultural. No obstante, desde el punto de vista formativo, la especialización científica en el ámbito del patrimonio no es una disciplina completamente consolidada en España. Actualmente no hay todavía estudios superiores en Ciencia relacionados con la conservación del patrimonio a pesar de que está sobradamente probada la aportación de sus distintas disciplinas en este campo. Por ello, es muy necesaria la organización de actividades de formación y difusión relacionadas con la contribución de la ciencia y la tecnología a la conservación y restauración de bienes culturales para conservadores, restauradores, gestores y responsables de patrimonio cultural, etc. Propiciar el acercamiento entre estos dos sectores culturales y establecer puentes entre ellos es obligado por parte de las Administraciones Públicas en materia de cultura. En este contexto el Plan Nacional de Investigación en Conservación (PNIC) promueve bienalmente este congreso. Coincidiendo además con el AÑO EUROPEO DEL PATRIMONIO 2018, esta edición pretende tener un enfoque más internacional; para ello se contará con grupos de investigación con trabajos desarrollados preferentemente en Europa, profesionales que puedan exponer la situación de la investigación en conservación del Patrimonio en el ámbito europeo, así como proyectos de investigación que por su contenido tienen un carácter transnacional.

Book excerpt: Because of the magnificent response to the call for papers for the 7th International Biodeterioration Symposium held at Cambridge, UK, some difficulties have been experienced in the editing of these proceedings. The numbers of papers submitted exceeded expectation and because of this it has been necessary to accommodate those not actually in the proceedings into the International Biodeterioration journal. A small number of papers were not suitable for publication and were therefore eliminated. Many authors disregarded the guidelines laid down for the length of submitted papers. However, every attempt has been made to accommodate the maximum number of contributions in the proceedings. The original selection included those which most nearly conformed to the length requirement. Even so this has meant, in many cases, cutting down the text, eliminating tables and/or illustrations and pruning the reference list. When references have been trimmed a note has been included to the effect that an extended list may be obtained from the author/senior author. Where it was not possible to carry out these procedures without seriously altering the text and the import of the paper they have been included amongst those to be published in the journal International Biodeterioration. The exceptions to the procedures outlined above are the invited review papers which have been presented in full. Happily, the authors have been conscientious in keeping to the guidelines laid down for these contributions.
