Book excerpt: Strait Art: An Anthology of Exhibitions from the Upper Left-Hand Corner, a collection of essays written by Jake Seniuk, was gathered by him from the more than 150 exhibitions he curated during his twenty-three-year tenure as director of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center. From little-known to well-known artists, in solo, duo, and group exhibitions, Seniuk made visual, thematic, and personal connections with Northwest artists, and his writings gave unique and poetic voice to his curation that honored and augmented the art on view. The book has a page count of just under 300, with more than 300 images. Strait Art is being published by Marrowstone Press in association with the Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA), the institution that is acting as the fiscal agent for this book project.

Book excerpt: The book is an expanded, pictorial review of the history of painting in Oregon from 1859-1959. The first edition was published as an encyclopedia and index of Oregon painters with historical data about the evolution of painting styles, educational institutions, and exhibition venues in the Northwest; this book expands the focus on the history of painting in Oregon, adding essays on Impressionism and Modernism while using more and better visual examples to illustrate the strength of the state's early painters. In addition, the original indexed content has been edited and condensed. Oregon Painters fills an important niche, as little has been written about the early history of Northwest art and this volume serves as a valuable resource for discovering artists who remain largely unknown but whose works continue to gain in reputation and value.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 2006, Art of the Northwest Coast offers an expansive history of this great tradition, from the earliest known works to those made at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Although non-Natives often claimed that First Nations cultures were disappearing, Northwest Coast Native people continued to make art during the painful era of colonization, often subtly expressing resistance to their oppressors and demonstrating the resilience of their heritage. Integrating the art's development with historical events following contact with Euro-Americans sheds light on the creativity of artists as they appropriated and transformed foreign elements into uniquely Indigenous statements. A new chapter discusses contemporary artists, including Marianne Nicholson, Nicholas Galanin, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, and Sonny Assu, who address pressing issues ranging from Indigenous sovereignty and destruction of the environment to the power of Native women and efforts to work with non-Natives to heal the wounds of racism and discrimination.

Book excerpt: In 1971, with an advertisement in the June issue of Artforum, Diane Arbus announced the offering of her limited-edition portfolio, A box of ten photographs. At the time of her death, one month later, only four were sold. Two were purchased from Arbus by Richard Avedon; another by Jasper Johns. The last of the four was purchased by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper's Bazaar. Arbus signed the prints in all four sets, and each was accompanied by an overlying vellum sheet inscribed with an extended caption. For Feitler, Arbus added an eleventh photograph. This is the first publication to focus exclusively on A box of ten photographs, using the eleven-print set that Arbus assembled for Feitler. It was acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., in 1986, and is the only one of the four portfolios completed and sold by Arbus that is publicly held. This publication examines this unique object as the sole body of images selected by Arbus herself, and considers its legacy as a key document of her enduring impact on contemporary photographic practice. An in-depth essay features new and compelling scholarship by John P. Jacob, the McEvoy Family Curator for Photography at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Diane Arbus: A box of ten photographs, on view at the museum from April through September of 2018.

Book excerpt: Artists do it differently. Make gardens, that is. This lusciously photographed book showcases 10 creative, unconventional, sometimes outrageous gardens made by painters, glass blowers, collage artists and sculptors. Their uncommon approaches provide fresh ideas for gardeners tired of the same old beds, borders and lawns. "The Artist's Eye" section of each chapter offers practical advice for readers to use in their own gardens.
