Book Synopsis Tobe: A Critical Edition by : Benjamin Filene
Download or read book Tobe: A Critical Edition written by Benjamin Filene and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When UNC Press published Stella Gentry Sharpe's Tobe in 1939, it was hailed as one of the first children's books to offer a dignified portrayal of an African American child and his family. Today, the power of Tobe lies as much in the questions it raises: Whose story gets told? Who gets to tell it? How do stories shape how we see ourselves and each other? This volume reproduces the original volume's text and images, places the book in the context of its time, and offers thought-provoking ways to read Tobe with fresh eyes. Benjamin Filene explores the book as a story told in words, as a world constructed through photographs, as a chapter in the history of juvenile literature, and (through interviews with the people photographed and their descendants) as a window into community memory. Encouraging close readings and second looks, Filene presents a project kit for exploring a historical text, yielding surprising insights. This new edition of a children's classic opens up questions of race, voice, and power in ways that encourage fruitful conversation and resist easy answers.

Download or read book "Ten Little Niggers" written by Wulf-D. Schmidt-Wulffen and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmless and funny, ...or racist? In children's books, we all remember the catchy melody and the controversy around insulting terms, such as "Negro" ...and others terms. What was the purpose of this? To promote colonialism and exploitation, or to serve as a means of education? Where does such a thinking come from that downgrades Africans and Blacks? Are these questions outdated? Not at all. In an immigration society, we cannot avoid addressing such issues - in everyday life as well as in education. This book examines the issue in the form of children's literature. (Series: Cultural Studies / Kulturwissenschaft / Estudios Culturales / Etudes Culturelles - Vol. 41)

Download or read book Brown Gold written by Michelle Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brown Gold is a compelling history and analysis of African-American children's picturebooks from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. At the turn of the nineteenth century, good children's books about black life were hard to find — if, indeed, young black readers and their parents could even gain entry into the bookstores and libraries. But today, in the "Golden Age" of African-American children's picturebooks, one can find a wealth of titles ranging from Happy to be Nappy to Black is Brown is Tan. In this book, Michelle Martin explores how the genre has evolved from problematic early works such as Epaminondas that were rooted in minstrelsy and stereotype, through the civil rights movement, and onward to contemporary celebrations of blackness. She demonstrates the cultural importance of contemporary favorites through keen historical analysis — scrutinizing the longevity and proliferation of the Coontown series and Ten Little Niggers books, for example — that makes clear how few picturebooks existed in which black children could see themselves and their people positively represented even up until the 1960s. Martin also explores how children's authors and illustrators have addressed major issues in black life and history including racism, the civil rights movement, black feminism, major historical figures, religion, and slavery. Brown Gold adds new depth to the reader's understanding of African-American literature and culture, and illuminates how the round, dynamic characters in these children's novels, novellas, and picturebooks can put a face on the past, a face with which many contemporary readers can identify.
