Since 1977 when varroa jacobsoni entered the federal repiblic of Germany it has already invaled greece, Italy and France. within a few years the entire mainland of the EC will tis problem. Because it is difficult to demostrate the initial infestation of a honeybee colony with varroa, it is almost impossible to obtain a reliable survey of the distribution of this mite. Many more countries may be infested at this moment. Therefore control measures have to be taken even before Varroa mites are found. The death of honeybee colonies follows within 3-4 years after infestation. This stage has been in the federal republic of Germany and Greece.

There are a variety of treatment and monitoring methods available, however, they are variable in efficacy, ease of application, and seasonality of application. In particular, many chemical options can only be used when honey intended for human consumption is not present. There is need for new treatments that can be used by beekeepers in late summer when harvestable honey is present. Known insecticidal properties of a C8910 fatty acid blend suggested that it may be a viable pesticide for controlling Varroa mites that can be used during the summer. Acute contact bioassays showed that the C8910 blend had a sufficient margin of safety to bees, however, the C8910 blend was not effective at controlling mites in full-sized colonies. Acute contact bioassays of shorter fatty acid chains showed that they are more toxic to mites and safer for bees and therefore may be more effective at controlling mites in full-sized colonies. Even though chemical options are essential for preventing colony loss, many beekeepers still choose not to treat with chemical products. It is essential to determine what drives beekeeping decisions in order to create new products that will be utilized by beekeepers. Survey results showed that there are distinctive differences between hobbyist and sideline beekeepers with regards to management methods used and factors used to make management decisions. Hobbyists beekeepers in Ohio used more treatment and monitoring methods that are time-intensive, such as powdered sugar shakes and drone brood removal, than semi-professional sideline beekeepers suggesting that factors pertaining to ease of application may be driving beekeeping decisions by beekeepers managing a larger number of colonies. Hobbyist beekeepers also used more methods that show little effectiveness (screened bottom boards and drone brood removal), suggesting that treatment decisions may be influenced by years of beekeeping experience. “Is organic” was the least important factor to both beekeeper groups. Additionally, “effective at killing mites” was the most important factor to both groups. Contrary to popular belief this suggests that beekeepers value effectiveness over product origin and therefore new products do not need to be organic to be utilized by beekeepers.

Book excerpt: Aspects concerning the bionomics of the parasitic honey bee brood mite, Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans were investigated. Mite mortality is great during the winter season when the host colony is not rearing brood, appearing to be independent of the mortality of its host. In winter period, no significant association between the number of dead mites and the number of dead adult workers was observed. It appears that the mites are dying by factors other than the host death. Drifting drones facilitate the horizontal transmission of Varroa jacobsoni mites between colonies, especially in modern beekeeping in which managed colonies are kept similarly hived and close together. A great tendency of drones to drift among colonies was observed. A significant correlation was found in the rate of mites per drones and the number of drones in the colonies. It was concluded that the transmission of Varroa jacobsoni among colonies via drifting drones is a common mechanism for the transmission of mites. The relationship between mite load and the size of the honey bee brood host was investigated. The data showed significant statistical differences between the infestation rate of the mite that is, number of female mites per infested pupae and the size of the worker brood nest of its host. With a high number of worker cells in the colony, the mite load is lowered. Feeding activities of V. jacobsoni causes a great impact on A. mellifera colony survival not only through physical damage caused by this mite but also through transmission of various entomopathogenic agents responsible for the outbreak of secondary diseases in the colony. I concluded that mites fed on adult bees during summer time. It appears that the frequency of mite feeding on adult bees at this time is low, suggesting that probably the mite feeds only for maintenance and survival rather than for reproduction.

Book excerpt: Although Varroa mite infestation of honeybee is widespread throughout the world, data about the level of infestation in the bees of our area are inadequate. Varroa mite infestation was first detected in Iraq in the mid-1980s. A large investigation was carried out to determine Varroa infestation level in the apiaries of Duhok Province, Northern Iraq. Otherwise, this study aimed to clarify the parasitic effect of the mite Varroa destructor on the mandibular and hypopharyngeal glands of Apis mellifera. A total of 1000 samples of adult workers of different ages from more than 20 separated apiaries were collected from August to the end of October 2013. Caped brood, drone and worker brood, from five apiaries were examined. A total of 450 newly emerged workers from three separated apiaries of the same area were collected during the late summer 2013. Effects of Varroa infestation on mandibular glands and hypopharyngeal glands of newly emerged workers of honeybees were investigated. High level of the infestation was found in all apiaries of Dohuk region and may act as a risk factor to the bee health. Results showed significant differences in the size of hypopharyngeal gland acini of newly emerged workers infested with one to three mites compared to noninfested newly emerged workers, while only newly emerged workers infested with three mites showed significant differences in the size of mandibular glands as compared to noninfested newly emerged workers. Management strategies of the mid- and late summer treatment are necessary to keep the mite population at low levels before and during the period when the winter bees emerge. Considerable numbers of Varroa mites can be controlled inside bee colonies without chemicals by removal of drone pupae or sometimes if necessary removing generations of worker pupae before emergence as adults. Using movable screened bottom boards in the opposite side of the hive entrance for the observation and counting naturally felled down Varroa mites were very beneficial in this area during hot summer periods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varroa mites (Varroa destructor) are the most damaging pest in modern beekeeping, and have been linked with elevated levels of colony loss. Experts increasingly recommend an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to manage Varroa, which incorporates both preventative and therapeutic controls. However, Varroa IPM is complicated and knowledge-intensive. Small-scale beekeepers in particular seem to have difficulty adopting effective Varroa control strategies, and suffer especially high rates of colony loss. This study took an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the adoption of Varroa IPM among small-scale beekeepers. First, I used surveys and interviews to characterize mite management strategies among Ohio small-scale beekeepers, and to explore the effect of experience and risk perception on behavior. Second, as a case study, I took a closer look at the efficacy and adoption of one complex IPM tool - drone brood removal (DBR) - through interviews, surveys, and an on-farm trial. Overall, I found no relationship between beekeeping experience and mite management strategies, but sampling (risk perception) was associated with the use of "soft" miticides (organic acids/essential oils) and DBR. I also found that most beekeepers who used DBR combined it with drone sampling (adjusting DBR based on sampled mite levels), and that labor was the biggest barrier to DBR use. In the on-farm trial, DBR significantly reduced mites in year one but not year two. These results suggest that mite management failures among small-scale beekeepers are not due to inexperience and may indicate a broader communication breakdown. They also suggest that risk perception - beekeepers' understanding that they even have mites - may be a key factor driving adoption of mite management practices. Finally, they point to the fact that DBR is already being used in nuanced ways as a combined management and sampling strategy. They suggest that DBR is not a silver bullet, but can be an effective tool to reduce mites if used consistently, intensively, and in combination with other management tactics.

They play a major role in maintaining biodiversity, ensuring the survival of many plants, enhancing forest regeneration, providing sustainability and adaptation to climate change and improving the quality and quantity of agricultural production systems. In fact, close to 75 percent of the world’s crops that produce fruits and seeds for human consumption depend, at least in part, on pollinators for sustained production, yield and quality. Beekeeping, also called apiculture, refers to all activities concerned with the practical management of social bee species. These guidelines aim to provide useful information and suggestions for a sustainable management of bees around the world, which can then be applied to project development and implementation.
