This book was released on 1964 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete data from 28 rocket grenade experiments at Wallops Island, Virginia, and Fort Churchill, Canada, are presented. Pressures, temperatures, densities, and winds have been derived directly from the recorded times of explosions and sound arrivals; but no attempt has been made to analyze the meteorological significance of these measurements. Error analyses on 16 of the Wallops experiments are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical techniques have been developed which can be used to determine the effect of density and temperature on the trajectories of reentry vehicles for altitudes between the surface and 60 km. Arrays of monthly means and standard deviations of density and temperature at 2-km intervals of altitude to 60 km, together with interlevel coefficients of correlation of density with density and temperature, are provided for the mid-season months (January, April, July, October) at 10 locations between latitudes 8 deg. and 64 deg. N. These data are in format that can be easily used to estimate the distributions of vertical density and temperature gradients and the effects of day-to-day density variations on the trajectories of reentry vehicles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distributions of temperatures, pressures, and densities derived from rocket observations between 30 and 80 km are examined with special attention given to extremes. Estimates are provided of the medians and values that are exceeded 1 and 10 percent of the time at various latitudes when the monthly means are highest, and of the 99- and 90-percent extremes and medians when monthly means are lowest. The high and low extreme values of temperature, pressure, and density at these levels occur near the pole. Densities are highest in summer when the circulation pattern is dominated by an anticyclone centered over the pole. Lowest values occur in winter and are associated with the polar cyclone that is normally centered off the east coast of northern Greenland.

Book excerpt: Analysis of neutral density data has made it possible to extend curves of mean density as a function of latitude and season from 90 to 120 km. There is an approximate isopycnic point at 91 km. Above this point the density variations are reversed from what they are at 80 km. In other words, at 120 km the density in summer and at the tropics is lower than that in CIRA 1965 and in winter the density is higher. The density curves have been idealized near 120 km to join at one of three points. These correspond to typical summer and tropical conditions, winter conditions, and spring/autumn conditions. The summer density is 20 percent below that of the U.S. Standard, the winter density is 50 percent above the Standard and the spring/autumn density is 1 percent above the Standard. By application of appropriate theory the corresponding variations in temperature and mean molecular weight have been calculated. An unexpected result of the theory is the prediction of a seasonal variation of the mean molecular weight. Some of the data presented in the paper have been analyzed since the models were derived. These data have been found to be acceptably close to the models. (Author).

Book excerpt: "New physics" is an appealing new keyword, not yet devalued by the ravages of inflation. But what has this to do with such an ugly field as plasma physics, steeped in classical physics, mostly outworn, with all its unsolved and ambiguous technological problems and its messy and open ended numerical studies? "New physics" is concerned with quarks, Higgs particles, grand unified theory, super strings, gravitational waves, and the profound basics of cosmology and black holes. It is the field of astonishing quantum effects, demonstrated by the von Klitzing effect and high temperature superconductors. But what can plasma physicists offer, after so many years of expensive and frustrating research to solve the problem of fusion energy? One may suggest that the fascinating research ofchaos with applications to plasma, or the achievements of statistical mechanics applied to plasmas, has something to offer and should be the subject of attention. However, this is not the aim of this book. Complementing the traditional aim of physics, which is to interpret the phenomena of nature by generalizing laws such that exact predictions about new properties and effects can be drawn, this book demonstrates how new physics has been derived over the last 30 years from the state of matter which exists at high temperatures (plasma).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the ISO 9000 quality standard resulted in renewed interest and pressure on industry to strengthen their quality and metrology standards. To meet this renewed interest Practical Density Measurement and Hydrometry provides invaluable, contemporary information on mass metrology. The book highlights the principles of physics involved and the technology needed to accurately measure the density of solids and liquids to high precision to meet the increasing demands on the metrology industry. Starting with national and international density standards, the book proceeds to discuss the variety of methods used to accurately measure solid and liquid density, to compare and contrast these techniques, and to thoroughly explain the thermal dilation of liquids. It also examines interferometers used in dimensional measurements of solid-based density standards, corrections applicable due to finite aperture, phase change due to reflection and ringing, and special methods for density determination. The final chapters detail specific points of relevance to density measurements and hydrometry for materials commonly used in industry. Complimented with practical guidance on applying these measurement techniques, calibration procedures, and data tables, this book is an essential reference for metrologists and a valuable introduction for graduate students.
