Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if organization's pursued something other than an economic agenda? It may appear on the surface that this is a na•ve question, but it is a fundamental question about the role of organizations in our society. Why has the capitalist profit and neo-liberal agenda become so entrenched in Western society that we can't possibly imagine anything different? The evidence that the system is flawed is plentiful and yet we still hang onto what we know, a little like a relationship that has past it's best before date but is not yet damaging enough for a parting of ways. Do we ignore the evidence out of fear or because there appears to be no viable alternative? If growth and profit is part of the equation then what alternative is there to capitalism? This book explores what different might look like and in doing so proposes an alternative paradigm. It seeks to begin a dialogue about whether, if growth and profit are an important part of the equation, then 'Important for what purpose?' What follows is a proposition of an alternative agenda for organizations, one of doing good and the introduction of a new business framework - Temperatism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperatism is more than a bleeding heart version of the capitalist ideal. Its purpose is to tackle key injustices and social inequality that are symptoms of the capitalist market system. By focusing on an agenda of doing good, temperatism seeks to reduce the level of elitism and social exclusion, that capitalism claims are inevitable, by sharing access to resources and ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to exercise their talent potential. With the world economy in flux and globalism under pressure from populist politicians finding a new way to think about business and doing good is significant at this point in history. The hurt and pain that inequality inflicts on individuals and groups in society through exclusion and neglect is in conflict with our natural sense of affinity, collaboration and our intrinsic sense of fair play and justice. The dysfunction that we are currently experiencing in our society is as a direct result of the inequality within our society. Temperatism is based on the idea that humanity has the potential to co-operate, collaborate, assist and contribute to the greater good. The questions discussed in Volume 2 explore how replacing the profit motive with a doing good motive makes it possible to tackle some of society’s biggest challenges including reducing poverty, improving access to health and education, defending human rights, and protecting the environment. Organizations with a social conscience will leave a legacy of which they can be rightly proud, shifting business from being the center of society’s problems to being its savior.

Book excerpt: This book offers an alternative to the industrial revolutionary paradigm of organization that we still live and work with today and instead argues that the environmental and economic complexity of the digital age require an evolutionary leap in the purpose, design, and traits of organization. Organizational Design in Business tackles the subject of organization development and design through an organic and purpose-driven approach and provides practical how-to tools for managers and leaders. This book challenges the idea that business as usual is a viable option in the digital economy. If performance is to be driven at an organizational level, and is to be sustainable, then business leaders and development professionals need to have a deep understanding of how to achieve balance in their organization in response to the complexity of the external business environment.

The women validated 21 career myths and provided advice and tips for helping women overcome them. While women seem to agree that these myths exist, until now, there has been few development resources dedicated to overcoming them.

Book excerpt: Anyone interested in the entire sweep of political thought over the last hundred years will find in Norberto Bobbio's Ideological Profile of Twentieth-Century Italy a masterful, thought-provoking guide. Home to the largest communist party in a democratic society, Italy has been a unique place politically, one where Christian democrats, liberals, fascists, socialists, communists, and others have co-existed in sizable numbers. In this book, Bobbio, who himself played an outstanding role in the development of Italian civic culture, follows each of the major ideologies, explaining how they developed, describing the key actors, and considering the legacies they left to political culture. He wrote Ideological Profile in 1968 to explain from a personal perspective the history behind that decade's tumultuous politics. Bobbio's defense of democracy and critique of capitalism are among the themes that will particularly interest American readers of this updated edition, the first to appear in English. Beginning in the late nineteenth century with positivism and Marxism, Bobbio next presents the ideological currents that developed before the outbreak of the First World War: Catholic, socialist, irrational and anti-democratic thought, the reaction against positivism, and the thinking of Benedetto Croce. After discussing the impact of the war, the author turns to the revolutionary-reactionary polarization of the postwar period and the ideology of fascism. The final chapters consider Croce's opposition to fascism and the ideals of the resistance and conclude with the post-Second World War "Years of Involvement." Originally published in 1995. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
