Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fascinating and vivid." New Statesman "Thoroughly researched." The Spectator "Intriguing." BBC History Magazine "Vividly told." BBC History Revealed "A timely warning against persecution." Morning Star "Astute and thoughtful." History Today "An important work." All About History "Well-researched." The Tablet On the morning of Thursday 29 June 1682, a magpie came rasping, rapping and tapping at the window of a prosperous Devon merchant. Frightened by its appearance, his servants and members of his family had, within a matter of hours, convinced themselves that the bird was an emissary of the devil sent by witches to destroy the fabric of their lives. As the result of these allegations, three women of Bideford came to be forever defined as witches. A Secretary of State brushed aside their case and condemned them to the gallows; to hang as the last group of women to be executed in England for the crime. Yet, the hatred of their neighbours endured. For Bideford, it was said, was a place of witches. Though 'pretty much worn away' the belief in witchcraft still lingered on for more than a century after their deaths. In turn, ignored, reviled, and extinguished but never more than half-forgotten, it seems that the memory of these three women - and of their deeds and sufferings, both real and imagined – was transformed from canker to regret, and from regret into celebration in our own age. Indeed, their example was cited during the final Parliamentary debates, in 1951, that saw the last of the witchcraft acts repealed, and their names were chanted, as both inspiration and incantation, by the women beyond the wire at Greenham Common. In this book, John Callow explores this remarkable reversal of fate, and the remarkable tale of the Bideford Witches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing this book, Elena Stevens' aim is to respond to calls for a more diverse, decolonised curriculum - calls which have become more insistent following the reinvigoration of the Black Lives Matter movement, the #MeToo movement and other landmark events. Highlighting the lived experiences of women, the working classes, and BAME and LGBTQ+ communities in particular, 40 Ways to Diversify the History Curriculum draws upon a wide range of personal stories to exemplify significant historical moments and shed new light on topics that have traditionally been taught through narrower lenses. The book serves as a resource bank for teachers wishing to enliven and diversify history lessons at Key Stages 2-3, GCSE, A level and beyond.Elena helpfully opens with a discussion of the theoretical/historiographical developments that lay behind calls to diversify the curriculum - and, to accompany each of the 40 historical case studies, she provides ideas and activities for translating the case studies into lesson plans and enquiries. Furthermore, Elena also guides teachers in shaping new enquiries from scratch.Suitable for teachers of secondary school and Key Stage 2 history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the people of early modern England, the dividing line between the natural and supernatural worlds was both negotiable and porous - particularly when it came to issues of authority. Without a precise separation between ’science’ and ’magic’ the realm of the supernatural was a contested one, that could be used both to bolster and challenge various forms of authority and the exercise of power in early modern England. In order to better understand these issues, this volume addresses a range of questions regarding the ways in which ideas, beliefs and constructions of the supernatural threatened and conflicted with authority, as well as how the power of the supernatural could be used by authorities (monarchical, religious, legal or familial) to reinforce established social norms. Drawing upon a range of historical, literary and dramatic texts the collection reveals intersecting early modern anxieties in relation to the supernatural, issues of control and the exercise of power at different levels of society, from the upper echelons of power at court to local and domestic spaces, and in a range of publication contexts - manuscript sources, printed prose texts and the early modern stage. Divided into three sections - ’Magic at Court’, ’Performance, Text and Language’ and ’Witchcraft, the Devil and the Body’ - the volume offers a broad cultural approach to the subject that reflects current research by a range of early modern scholars from the disciplines of history and literature. By bringing scholars into an interdisciplinary dialogue, the case studies presented here generate fresh insights within and between disciplines and different methodologies and approaches, which are mutually illuminating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperance Lloyd, Susannah Edwards and Mary Trembles of Bideford were the last three women hanged in England as witches, in 1682. Why? Educated, thinking people sent them to the gallows. The man we know for the King James Bible legalized the hunting and killing of hundreds of his own subjects. Physicians, trained only in "Discourse," accused the natural healers of witchcraft. The women were declared guilty because, according to the Church, to deny witchcraft was to deny God; convicted on hearsay evidence; and executed to appease an angry mob. But who were they? This novel invites you between the lines of history to witness their lives and deaths. This historical novel questions accepted notions of Time. Perhaps Temperance is still with today's herbalists. What if those old men in the dark corner of every bar have been there forever? Are there still leaders living in the paranoid shadows of a personal trauma? Come, meet Temperance, Susannah and Mary. Then please remember them, "In the Hope of an End to Persecution and Intolerance," by signing a Petition to the U.K., Government to Pardon of Temperance Lloyd, Susannah Edwards and Mary Trembles for the crimes they could not have committed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, Devon was seen as unimportant because of its distance from London and its bad roads – lesser, it was thought, than the historical capital or culturally rich home counties. How wrong could non-Devonians have been? The county is all about its splendid prehistoric and historic remains, its myths, and its maritime legacy. That's not to forget the tenacious people who have lived there for thousands of years: wreckers, misbehaving clergymen, eccentrics and determined women who bucked the trends. From stories of early man right up to modern times and every period in-between, Devon (and this book) has it all.
