Book excerpt: The Remaking of Television New Zealand outlines and analyses the radical changes made to television broadcasting in New Zealand during the period 1984-1992. It looks closely at how TVNZ, a division of the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand, was transformed into a successful commercial company under the State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986. Based on remarkable inside access, this book is an important and valuable study of the transformation of a staid public television broadcaster into a market-oriented business.
Book Synopsis Television in New Zealand by : Roger Horrocks
Download or read book Television in New Zealand written by Roger Horrocks and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television in New Zealand offers a range of thoughtful and passionate perspectives on the medium of television and its relationship with New Zealand. Although the focus of the book is television today, and it offers some detailed discussion of current programs, it concentrates on long-term trends and generic continuities. In focusing on the present the book also acknowledges the future, for television is passing through an exceptional period of change. Many contributors are also concerned to derive lessons from the so-called "New Zealand experiment," the turbulent years between 1984 and 1999 when successive governments pushed television ever more deeply into commercialism.
Download or read book Maori Television written by Jo Smith and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 2004, Māori Television has had a major impact on the New Zealand broadcasting landscape. But over the past year or so, the politics of Māori Television have been brought to the foreground of public consciousness, with other media outlets tracking Māori Television’s search for a new CEO, allegations of editorial intervention and arguments over news reporting approaches to Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust. Based on a Marsden Grant and three years of interviews with key stakeholders – staff, the Board, other media, politicians, funders and viewers – this is a deep account of Māori Television in its first ten years. Jo Smith argues that today’s arguments must be understood within a broader context shaped by non-Māori interests. Can a Māori broadcaster follow both tikanga and the Broadcasting Standards Authority? Is it simply telling the news in Māori, or broadcasting the news with a Māori perspective? How can it support te reo Māori at the same time as appeal to all New Zealand? How does it function as the voice of its Māori stakeholders? Offering five frameworks to address the challenges of a Māori organisation working within a wider non-Māori context, this is a solidly researched examination of Māori Television’s unique contribution to the media cultures of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Book Synopsis Television Across Asia by : Michael Keane
Download or read book Television Across Asia written by Michael Keane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-10-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the trade in television program formats, which is a crucially important ingredient in the globalisation of culture, in Asia. It examines how much traffic there is in program formats, the principal direction of flow of such traffic, and the economic and cultural significance of this trade for the territories involved, and for the region as a whole. It shows how new technology, deregulation, privatisation and economic recession have greatly intensified competition between broadcasters in Asia, as in other parts of the world, and discusses how this in turn has multiplied the incidence of television format remakes, with some countries developing dedicated format companies, and others becoming net importers and adapters of formats.

Book Synopsis The impact of globalisation on New Zealand television by :
Download or read book The impact of globalisation on New Zealand television written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-07-23 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Cultural Studies - Pacific Rim, grade: 60%, School of Political, Social and International Studies (University of East Anglia (England)), course: Politics and Popular Culture, 20 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: New Zealand is a small country in the southern hemisphere, close to the South Pole. It consists of two islands; the smaller North Island is the more populated one of the two; it also holds the capital and the largest city. In fact the country has ten times more sheep than inhabitants. It was the last place in the world to be settled by humans; it was also one of the last countries to get television. It is the democratic country with the most unregulated media policy. But globalisation even reaches into this part of the world... Globalisation is often political. State regulation of media and popular culture is a political tool, either to fight off or to invite globalised cultural artefacts. But also the act of exporting cultural products is political. The aim of this paper is to look at the impact of globalisation on the media industry of New Zealand. It investigates the interrelation between media policy, media ownership, and media effects. Furthermore, it examines the form and content of television programs in New Zealand. This country was selected for a case study due to its unique media regulation. Moreover, its geographic, economic, and cultural peculiarities make it an interesting case for investigation. The first part of the paper provides the theoretical background for discussing the media situation in New Zealand. It introduces and briefly discusses the major perspectives on globalisation.
