Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data will not help you if you can’t see it where you need it. Or can’t collect it where you need it. Upon these principles, wearable technology was born. And although smart watches and fitness trackers have become almost ubiquitous, with in-body sensors on the horizon, the future applications of wearable computers hold so much more. A trusted reference for almost 15 years, Fundamentals of Wearable Computers and Augmented Reality goes beyond smart clothing to explore user interface design issues specific to wearable tech and areas in which it can be applied. Upon its initial publication, the first edition almost instantly became a trusted reference, setting the stage for the coming decade, in which the explosion in research and applications of wearable computers and augmented reality occurred. Written by expert researchers and teachers, each chapter in the second edition has been revised and updated to reflect advances in the field and provide fundamental knowledge on each topic, solidifying the book’s reputation as a valuable technical resource as well as a textbook for augmented reality and ubiquitous computing courses. New Chapters in the Second Edition Explore: Haptics Visual displays Use of augmented reality for surgery and manufacturing Technical issues of image registration and tracking Augmenting the environment with wearable audio interfaces Use of augmented reality in preserving cultural heritage Human-computer interaction and augmented reality technology Spatialized sound and augmented reality Augmented reality and robotics Computational clothing From a technology perspective, much of what is happening now with wearables and augmented reality would not have been possible even five years ago. In the fourteen years since the first edition burst on the scene, the capabilities and applications of both technologies are orders of magnitude faster, smaller, and cheaper. Yet the book’s overarching mission remains the same: to supply the fundamental information and basic knowledge about the design and use of wearable computers and augmented reality with the goal of enhancing people’s lives.

Book excerpt: The papers comprising Vol. I and Vol. II were prepared for and presented at the International Conference on Information Networking 2002 (ICOIN 2002), which was held from January 30 to February 1, 2002 at Cheju Island, Korea. It was organized by the KISS (Korean Information Science Society) SIGIN in Korea, IPSJ SIG DPE (Distributed Processing Systems) in Japan, the ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute), and National Taiwan University in Taiwan. The papers were selected through two steps, refereeing and presentation review. We selected for the theme of the conference the motto “One World of Information Networking”. We did this because we believe that networking will transform the world into one zone, in spite of different ages, countries and societies. Networking is in the main stream of everyday life and affects directly millions of people around the world. We are in an era of tremendous excitement for professionals working in many aspects of the converging networking, information retailing, entertainment, and publishing companies. Ubiquitous communication and computing technologies are changing the world. Online communities, e commerce, e service, and distance learning are a few of the consequences of these technologies, and advanced networking will develop new applications and technologies with global impact. The goal is the creation of a world wide distributed computing system that connects people and appliances through wireless and high bandwidth wired channels with a backbone of computers that serve as databases and object servers. Thus, Vol.

Book excerpt: Texture accounts for an important part of the realism of simulated experiences, and it is most certainly true during tactile interaction. We usually experience roughness by running our fingers onto the explored surface. The perception of this fine texture is mediated by the vibrations generated by the encounters of the skin and the asperities of the surfaces. Reproduction of Tactual Textures presents factors that contribute to the mechanics of the interaction between a bare finger and a surface with a view to their artificial reproduction. It discusses the recording and reproduction of tactual textures, and analyses a case study of the development of a device able to record the vibratory signal from a fingertip sliding over a textured surface. The same device is then used in a reverse way to render those previously measured signals to the user’s fingertip. These developments open new questions about the biomechanical properties of the skin and their relation to perception. The second half of Reproduction of Tactual Textures focuses on the implication of the dynamic parameters of the skin onto rendering performance, and it concludes with a study on the important features that are present in the vibratory signal and their relation to texture perception. This state-of-the-art volume highlights the importance of the mechanics and biomechanics during the haptic exploration of surfaces and their possible contribution to perception. Collectively, the findings reported are pertinent to many applications, including robotic perception and the design of effective virtual reality systems.

Book excerpt: Web3 is a term which refers to the third generation of the World Wide Web; it is a decentralized internet architecture that uses blockchain technology, smart contracts, and other decentralized technologies to create a more secure and transparent internet.Concepts, Technologies, Challenges, and the Future of Web 3 is led by researchers with a valuable mix of industry and academic experience. The book delves into the concepts of decentralization, trustlessness, and interoperability and explores the challenges of Web3, including scalability, security, and regulatory compliance. It examines the current and potential future use cases of Web3, such as decentralized finance, supply chain management, identity verification, and decentralized social networks. “The core building blocks of Web3” is not just for researchers, academics, and students in computer science and related fields but also for developers, entrepreneurs, and businesses looking to build applications and services in the Web3 space. It offers a clear understanding of the technical and conceptual frameworks underpinning Web3 and the challenges and opportunities in the decentralized web. Moreover, the book is valuable for policymakers, regulators, and legal professionals interested in understanding the regulatory frameworks and legal implications of Web3. It provides insights into the potential impact of Web3 on governance, regulation, and law, highlighting the need for new policy frameworks to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the decentralized web.
