Book excerpt: INVESTIGATION OF THE TECHNOLOGY OF MANUFACTURE OF PRESS-FORMED CONSUMABLE ELECTRODES FOR MELTING Ti alloys revealed that it was possible to use less powerful presses for this purpose than in pressing through a tapered die by extrusion. An investigation of rational distribution of alloying elements in the press-formed electrode demonstrated the practicability of placing them in the center of the briquet with the creation, around this, of a dense wall of pressed sponge preventing the fused mass of fusible alloys from escaping and also preventing intensified evaporation of elements of higher vapor pressure than Ti. It was also found that the reaction between Al and Ti sponge, prior to the time that it enters directly into the zone of fusion, is small. The quantity of sponge to be employed in the press forming of a consumable electrode by batchwise alloying rendered it impossible for the weight of a batch of sponge between 3 and 1.4 kg to affect uniformity of distribution of Al in the alloy and its mechanical properties. The method of batchwise alloying, using a ratio between the weight of the portion of sponge used in the press forming and the weight of the molten metal in bath, as high as 1 to 3, is dependable. Book excerpt: The advantages of the skull method of melting are demonstrated, and its place in the technological system of ingot production is defined. Examined is the set-up of a skull furnace with consumable and permanent electrodes designed for the purpose of obtaining ingots of titanium alloys. The principle of skull melting is that the metals under the influence of the arc or any other source of heat are melted in a melting bath of a solid metal (skull) of the same composition a.

Book excerpt: Designed to support the need of engineering, management, and other professionals for information on titanium by providing an overview of the major topics, this book provides a concise summary of the most useful information required to understand titanium and its alloys. The author provides a review of the significant features of the metallurgy and application of titanium and its alloys. All technical aspects of the use of titanium are covered, with sufficient metals property data for most users. Because of its unique density, corrosion resistance, and relative strength advantages over competing materials such as aluminum, steels, and superalloys, titanium has found a niche in many industries. Much of this use has occurred through military research, and subsequent applications in aircraft, of gas turbine engines, although more recent use features replacement joints, golf clubs, and bicycles.Contents include: A primer on titanium and its alloys, Introduction to selection of titanium alloys, Understanding titanium's metallurgy and mill products, Forging and forming, Castings, Powder metallurgy, Heat treating, Joining technology and practice, Machining, Cleaning and finishing, Structure/processing/property relationships, Corrosion resistance, Advanced alloys and future directions, Appendices: Summary table of titanium alloys, Titanium alloy datasheets, Cross-reference to titanium alloys, Listing of selected specification and standardization organizations, Selected manufacturers, suppliers, services, Corrosion data, Machining data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manufacture and use of the powders of non-ferrous metals has been taking place for many years in what was previously Soviet Russia, and a huge amount of knowledge and experience has built up in that country over the last forty years or so. Although accounts of the topic have been published in the Russian language, no English language account has existed until now. Six prominent academics and industrialists from the Ukraine and Russia have produced this highly-detailed account which covers the classification, manufacturing methods, treatment and properties of the non-ferrous metals ( aluminium, titanium, magnesium, copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, lead, tin, bismuth, noble metals and earth metals). The result is a formidable reference source for those in all aspects of the metal powder industry. Covers the manufacturing methods, properties and importance of the following metals: aluminium, titanium, magnesium, copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, noble metals, rare earth metals, lead, tin and bismuth Expert Russian team of authors, all very experienced English translation and update of book previously published in Russian

It discusses the types of cast iron and the general purpose of cast irons. It also presents the history of the iron founding industry. Some of the topics covered in the book are the description of liquid metal state; preparation of liquid metal; process of melting; description of cupola melting and electric melting methods; control of composition of liquid metal during preparation; description of primary cast iron solidification structures; and thermal analysis of metals to determine its quality. Solidification science and the fundamentals of heat treatment are also discussed. An in-depth analysis of the hot quenching techniques is provided. The graphitization potential of liquid iron is well presented. A chapter is devoted to microstructural features of cast iron. The book can provide useful information to iron smiths, welders, students, and researchers.
