Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to ascertain the perceptions of technology integration by teachers from three one-to-one computing high schools in Pennsylvania. The three schools studied were all in various stages of the one-to-one initiative. The study was guided by two questions: What are the perceptions of teachers from three one-to-one computing high schools related to the use of technology in their classrooms? Also, what are the teachers' perceptions of professional development needs related to one-to-one laptop use? The perceptions of 89 teachers were collected using an online survey. The first part of the survey identified the tasks for which the students were using technology, the years of experience of the teachers, and the content areas of the teachers. The second part of the survey asked the teachers to respond to statements aligned to the levels of technology integration. The final part of the survey asked the teachers to respond to statements regarding frequency and types of professional development. Personal interviews were conducted with 22 participants from the three different schools. The findings indicate the teachers from the three schools studied perceived a high rate of technology integration. Additionally, the professional development program in regards to technology integration was most effective when it was teacher led, content focused, and choice driven.

The participants were twenty-nine teachers from a high school and middle school charter that worked within a 1:1 technology classroom. Twenty-nine participants answered survey questions that gave demographic information and asked them to rate and rank different aspects of professional development in hopes that particular aspects of professional development would be identified as being more effective at supporting and motivating teachers to integrate technology into the classroom. Three of those participants were randomly selected for participating in an interview that asked more specific questions about different aspects of professional development and those aspects’ supporting and motivating qualities. After this data was analyzed and compared, findings indicated which aspects of professional development were the most effective at supporting and motivating teachers to integrate technology into the classroom. Findings indicated that time, information of new technology, and technical support were the most supportive and motivating aspects of professional development while leadership, collaboration, and opportunity to go to off campus conferences were the least. It was also found that the overall culture of the school played a significant role in supporting and motivating teachers to integrate technology into the classroom. Overall, there was a need for more research to be done identifying how these different types of aspects played a role in supporting and motivating teachers to integrate technology into the classroom, and a need for more research to be done looking at how the overall culture of the school contributed to teachers’ success integrating technology into the classroom.

A grounded theory approach and case study design offered an effective exploration of the specific events within the bounded system or case of technology integration. The participants represented three professional employee categories of central administration (n = 2), campus administration (n = 4), and teaching staff (n = 6). The large urban school district’s majority of students were identified as economically disadvantaged. Twelve participants shared their experiences and perceptions of the implementation of the district’s one-to-one mobile technology strategy in two high schools. In each high school, all students and faculty were issued a district-owned laptop device. The data revealed five emergent themes that explained aspects of the whole-school reform within the district that follow: (a) teacher and leadership “buy-in” or support; (b) communication of the initiative; (c) need for reliable and consistent hardware and software; (d) outcomes, goals, and evaluations; (e) professional development. The efforts of this investigation identified several implications for practitioners seeking to enact best practice one-to-one strategies during future technology initiatives and whole-school reform efforts. Quantitative and qualitative investigation methods could be used in follow-up research of the central themes identified in this case study’s findings

Book excerpt: For teachers to successfully prepare students for the current job market and adhere to current legislation, they must integrate technology into their curriculum. Preparing teachers for this challenge is of great importance. However, the professional development provided to teachers for this purpose is most often inadequate. The purpose of this research was to study teachers’ perceptions of their readiness to implement new technology with the curriculum. The views of teachers who had and who had not participated in prescribed technology integration professional development were examined. The research included a study of their concerns about the anticipated one-to-one technology initiative at their school and how these concerns may have changed through participation in the prescribed professional development. It also included a study of their current technology use and their plans for change with the one-to-one initiative. The study asked how professional development related to teachers’ concerns regarding technology integration and what differences in technology use exist between teachers who had and had not participated in the professional development. This mixed methods study examined quantitative data collected through SEDL’s Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ) and qualitative data through SEDL’s Levels of Use (LoU) interview protocol. Through the analysis of data, differences in the two groups’ responses on the SoCQ and LoU instruments were observed. Differences in the data collected from the two groups through the SoCQ were not found to be statistically significant; however, there were observable differences. The themes of use of technology tools, technology integration, and perceptions of readiness emerged through analysis of data collected through the LoU. The findings of this study contribute to the existing body of literature in two significant ways. First, the findings support the literature on 21st century learning environments and the benefits and barriers of technology integration. Second, the findings provide support for the characteristics of effective professional development for technology integration. The implications of this research are important to legislators, school administrators and technology coordinators, teacher educators, and classroom teachers. .
