An unexpected side effect of the privatization and deregulation of the electricity industry, initiated during the late 1980s and early 1990s, is the opportunity for consumers to purchase electricity from a variety of energy service companies or to generate electricity themselves. Concurrently, the US Department of Energy, national energy laboratories, universities, and photovoltaic (PV) manufacturers have technically evaluated, tested, and demonstrated building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) to be a viable technology. Electricity industry restructuring and successful PV research and development raise a dilemma for building owners: is it worth the investment and effort to engage in the process of generating electricity with photovoltaics for individual buildings? A BIPV power system operates as a multifunctional building construction material; it generates energy as well as serves as part of the building envelope. The objective of the US Guidelines for the Economic Assessment of Building-Integrated Photovoltaic Power Systems is to identify the economic parameters of BIPV systems. Identifying these parameters will enable the decision-makers to appraise the economic feasibility and implications of investments in such building systems.

Book excerpt: This book discusses building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV) and provides solutions for solving problems related to designing, sizing and monitoring a BIPV that has been used to replace conventional building materials in parts of the building envelope such as the roof, skylights or facades. The book begins by introducing the basics to readers interested in learning about this technology and then outlines in an accessible way, a practical development plan for the installation and monitoring of these systems in residential, industrial, and commercial buildings. Chapters discuss the needs of installing, designing, and sizing and provide a financial analysis for a successful implementation of a BIPV system. This book is a useful tool for renewable energy designers, energy contractors, architects, government institutions, and those in the academic community who are interested in seamlessly integrating solar panels into the construction phase of new building projects or retrofitted into existing buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur D. Little, Inc., in conjunction with Solar Design Associates, conducted a study for the US Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Building Technologies (OBT) to determine the market potential for grid-connected, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). This study defines BIPV as two types of applications: (1) where the PV modules are an integral part of the building, often serving as the exterior weathering skin; and (2) the PV modules are mounted on the existing building exterior. Both of these systems are fully integrated with the energy usage of the building and have potential for significant market penetration in the US. Off-grid building applications also offer a near-term market for BIPV, but are not included in the scope of this study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of recent research that deals with the built environment and innovative materials, carried out by specialists working in universities and centers of research in different professional fields ─ architecture, engineering, physics ─ and in an area that that spans from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf, and from South Eastern Europe to the Middle East. This book takes the necessity of re-shaping the concept of building design in order to transform buildings from large scale energy consumers to energy savers and producers into consideration. The book is organized in two parts: theory and case studies. For the theoretical part, we chose from the wide range of sources that provide energy efficient materials and systems the two that seem to be endless: the sun and vegetation. Their use in building products represents a tool for specialists in the architectural design concept. The case-studies presented analyze different architectural programs, in different climates, from new buildings to rehabilitation approaches and from residential architecture to hospitals and sports arenas; each case emphasizes the interdisciplinarity of the building design activity in order to help readers gain a better understanding of the complex approach needed for energy efficient building design

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid increase of cloud computing, high performance computing (HPC) and the vast growth in Internet and Social Media use have aroused the interest in energy consumption and the carbon footprint of Data Centres. Data Centres primarily contain electronic equipment used for data processing (servers), data storage (storage equipment), and communications (network equipment). Collectively, this equipment processes, stores, and transmits digital information and is known as information technology (IT) equipment. Advanced Concepts for Renewable Energy Supply of Data Centres introduces a number of technical solutions for the supply of power and cooling energy into Data Centres with enhanced utilisation of renewable energy sources in order to achieve low energy Data Centres. Because of the high energy density nature of these unique infrastructures, it is essential to implement energy efficiency measures and reduce consumption before introducing any renewable energy source. A holistic approach is used with the objective of integrating many technical solutions such as management of the IT (Information Technology) load, efficient electrical supply to the IT systems, Low-Ex air-conditioning systems, interaction with district heating and cooling networks, re-use of heat, free cooling (air, seawater, groundwater), optimal use of heat and cold storage, electrical storage and integration in smart grids. This book is therefore a catalogue of advanced technical concepts that could be integrated into Data Centres portfolio in order to increase the overall efficiency and the share of renewable energies in power and cooling supply. Based on dynamic energy models implemented in TRNSYS some concepts are deeply evaluated through yearly simulations. The results of the simulation are illustrated with Sankey charts, where the energy flows per year within the subsystems of each concept for a selected scenario are shown, and graphs showing the results of parametric analysis. A set of environmental metrics (as the non-renewable primary energy) and financial metrics (CAPEX and OPEX) as well of energy efficiency metrics like the well-known PUE, are described and used to evaluate the different technical concepts.

Book excerpt: The world's deserts are sufficiently large that, in theory, covering a fraction of their landmass with PV systems could generate many times the current primary global energy supply. In three parts, this study details the background and concept of VLS-PV, maps out a development path towards the realization of VLS-PV systems and provides firm recommendations to achieve long-term targets. This represents the first study to provide a concrete set of answers to the questions that must be addressed in order to secure and exploit the potential for VLS-PV technology and its global benefits.
