Book excerpt: This workshop consisted of five sessions: Operational problems; High Pressure Neurological Syndrome (HPNS) in man; HPNS: mechanisms and potential methods of amelioration; Additional environmental limits; Clarification of future strategy. It was initialed as a sequel and an update of a previous workshop entitled 'Strategy for future diving to depths greater than 1000 feet.' It is apparent that there is a continuing need for free divers operating at depth, particularly in the acquisition of undersea energy sources. A recent development that increases the capability of the diver at depth is the addition of nitrogen to the helium-oxygen breathing mixture. It must be stated, however, that the underlying mechanisms which govern the effects of high pressures and dissolved gases are not yet well understood, and a considerable research effort must be made in order to place deep diving on a more secure basis. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 18: Environmental Physiology covers the physiological mechanisms in living organisms. This book discusses the circadian system properties and the control of secretion in reptilian salt glands. This book deals first with the central neural substrates for osmoregulation in the mammal; properties of the body fluids affecting basal salt gland secretion and urine formation in birds; properties of sleep-promoting factor S derived from human urine; and interrelation between sleep and temperature regulation. Other chapters present an introduction to hormonal and pharmacological aspects in exercise physiology, as well as the physiological responses during sustained isomeric contractions. These topics are followed by a discussion on the mechanism of exercise, nutrition, and growth. The last chapters are devoted to the oxytocin influences on the central nervous system of healthy young men. These chapters also describe drug metabolism in athletes. The book can provide useful information to veterinarians, scientists, students, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You will find in this book some valuable and reliable lessons about safe diving The editors of and authors of this book are a cadre of scientists and physicians with broad experience and knowledge of diving physiology and decompression theory. As is often the case, it requires a group effort to succeed in advancing practical knowledge. The colloquialism "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" is often true and the PHYPODE Reasearch Group epitomizes this concept. By logically grouping the various elements of diving science and medicine with provocative "food for thought" sections, the text offers valuable lessons to those interested in the current state of diving. Despite nearly 170 years of reasearch, the fundamenal nature of decompression stress remains elusive. As is well outlined in this book, great advances have been made to the practical elements allowing for safe diving. Nonetheless, there are glaring voids of knowledge related to the nature of bubble nucleation, its consequences and methods to ameliorate risk. The synergy exhibited in this text not only provides a foundation for what is known, it offers a glimpse of where research is taking us. - Professor Stephen R. Thom, Dept. of Emergency Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine This is a book for all diving fans who want to discover their passion through a scientific approach. EXCERPT Decompression illnesses (DCI), or as they are called more scientifically: dysbaric disorders, represent a complex spectrum of pathophysiological conditions with a wide variety of signs and symptoms related to dissolved gas and its subsequent phase change.1, 2 Any significant organic or functional dysfunction in individuals who have recently been exposed to a reduction in environmental pressure (i.e., decompression) must be considered as possibly being caused by DCI until proven otherwise. However, apart from the more obvious acute manifestations of a single, sudden decompression, individuals who have experienced repetitive exposures (e.g. commercial or professional divers and active recreational divers) may also develop sub-acute or chronic manifestations, even if subtle and almost symptomless. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Dr. Costantino Balestra started to study neurophysiology of fatigue then started studies on environmental physiology issues. He teaches physiology, biostatistics, research methodology, as well as other subjects. He Is the Director of the Integrative Physiology Laboratory and a full time professor at the Haute Ecole Bruxelles-Brabant (Brussels). He is VP of DAN Europe for research and education, Immediate past President of the European Underwater and Baromedical Society. Peter Germonpré is the Medical Director of the Centre for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy of the Military Hospital Brussels, Belgium).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking of diving below 130ft or just interested to know more about deep diving? Then you may find the information in this book interesting and of value. Want to know the training needed to get certified to dive below 130, 200, 330ft? This book looks at the different training available to get you certified to dive to the depth that you want to go to. What else can I get out of this book? This book gives an overview of some of the effects of diving on the human body, especially long duration and deep diving. The topics covered will give you a broad overview for each one covered, and is a good starting point to broaden your knowledge of deep diving. What topics are covered? * Why people do deep dives * Training needed to dive deeper than 130 feet safely * The mental shift needed to transform from a recreational diver to a survival diver * Handling unforeseen events underwater when you cannot surface immediately * BCD-breathing * Swapping regulators underwater * Caffeine and diving * Smoking and diving * Sugar and diving * Fatty foods and diving * Certain medication and diving * Breast implants and diving * Diving while breast feeding * Effects of oxygen to the brain and body * Isobaric counter diffusion decompression sickness with example calculations to help you understand it on a high level * Depth records * Rebreathers compared to open circuit * Women and diving * Men and diving * Supplements for deep diving * Breathing exercises for deep diving * Common mistakes made in deep diving that can kill you * Handling missed decompression * IWR (in-water recompression) * Liquid breathing * Effects of diving on the body, both long and short term Will I be able to dive to 400ft after reading this book? No. You need hands on training from a qualified instructor to be able to dive below 130ft. This book is also not a training manual for deep diving, but a book that looks at a high level at some of the issues and effects of deep diving. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to handle unforeseen problems and come back alive. To change your diving safely, you will have to change your thinking. Something to think about. Deep diving is an equipment and knowledge intensive sport, that carry greater risk than shallow sports diving. Deep diving is also an expensive sport, and training can run in the thousands of dollars when reaching the Tri-Mix diver level or below. The deeper you go, the higher the risk for things to go wrong. Correct training for deep diving gives you skills to handle a great deal of problems. However, no training can prepare you for every possible thing that can happen. An open mind and new ideas combined with training can save you when it all goes pear shaped. If even just one tip or one idea in this book one day helps to save your life when things go wrong deep down, would it have been worth getting this book? Get Your copy today
