Comprehending the chemical and physical characteristics of particulates is essential to solve health problems, smog formations, acid rain issues, and climate changes. Over the last 30 years, environmental professionals have started investigating non-destructive techniques to evaluate physical characteristics because of its substantial affects on human health. This thesis presents Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) integrated with image processing technique as a tool for physical characterization of particulate matter. The characterization process involves image reading, preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, and representation steps. In these steps, selection of optimal image segmentation algorithm is the key for analyzing the captured images of fine particulate matter. In this thesis, a novel frame work for automating the process of selecting optimal image segmentation algorithm for each image using Support Vector Machines (SVMs) is presented. In addition to this, an image processing algorithm is developed based on Sobel edge detection method for statistical determination of various morphological parameters including area, diameter and shape factor of the particles.

Book excerpt: Three techniques for particulate matter analysis are discussed: (1) neutron activation, which is a method that samples the entire specimen, both surface and bulk; (2) electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), which samples particle surfaces only; and (3) scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which reveals particle size and morphology, and can be used to determine composition differences in individual particles. These three techniques can be combined to construct highly detailed characterizations of particulate matter specimens. It is shown that multielement analysis can be quickly done by neutron activation and that surface analysis and individual particle analysis obtained by ESCA and SEM, are very important supplementary information. This series of symposia was initiated in 1987 in light of the growing importance to eliminate particles from process gases and liquids. As pointed out in the Preface to antecedent volumes in this series that particles in process gases and liquids could cause significant yield losses in precision manufacturing and concomitantly there has been heightened interest in understanding the behavior of particles in gases and liquids and devising ways to eliminate, or at least reduce substantially, these particles. The concern about particles in gases and liquids has been there for qui.te some time in the microelectronics arena, but there are other areas also where particles are of significant concern, e.g. in operation theatres in hospitals, food and beverage industry, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. This symposium basically had the same objectives as its predecessors, but to provide an update on the R&D activity taking place in the arena of particle detection, characterization and control. The printed program comprised a total of 28 papers dealing with variegated aspects of particles in gases and liquids. There were brisk and lively discussions and the attendees offered many positive comments, which goes to show that it was a well-received and needed symposium.
