Book Synopsis Representations and Techniques for 3D Object Recognition and Scene Interpretation by : Derek Hoiem
Download or read book Representations and Techniques for 3D Object Recognition and Scene Interpretation written by Derek Hoiem and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the grand challenges of artificial intelligence is to enable computers to interpret 3D scenes and objects from imagery. This book organizes and introduces major concepts in 3D scene and object representation and inference from still images, with a focus on recent efforts to fuse models of geometry and perspective with statistical machine learning. The book is organized into three sections: (1) Interpretation of Physical Space; (2) Recognition of 3D Objects; and (3) Integrated 3D Scene Interpretation. The first discusses representations of spatial layout and techniques to interpret physical scenes from images. The second section introduces representations for 3D object categories that account for the intrinsically 3D nature of objects and provide robustness to change in viewpoints. The third section discusses strategies to unite inference of scene geometry and object pose and identity into a coherent scene interpretation. Each section broadly surveys important ideas from cognitive science and artificial intelligence research, organizes and discusses key concepts and techniques from recent work in computer vision, and describes a few sample approaches in detail. Newcomers to computer vision will benefit from introductions to basic concepts, such as single-view geometry and image classification, while experts and novices alike may find inspiration from the book's organization and discussion of the most recent ideas in 3D scene understanding and 3D object recognition. Specific topics include: mathematics of perspective geometry; visual elements of the physical scene, structural 3D scene representations; techniques and features for image and region categorization; historical perspective, computational models, and datasets and machine learning techniques for 3D object recognition; inferences of geometrical attributes of objects, such as size and pose; and probabilistic and feature-passing approaches for contextual reasoning about 3D objects and scenes. Table of Contents: Background on 3D Scene Models / Single-view Geometry / Modeling the Physical Scene / Categorizing Images and Regions / Examples of 3D Scene Interpretation / Background on 3D Recognition / Modeling 3D Objects / Recognizing and Understanding 3D Objects / Examples of 2D 1/2 Layout Models / Reasoning about Objects and Scenes / Cascades of Classifiers / Conclusion and Future Directions
Book Synopsis Computer Vision and Image Processing by : Linda Shapiro
Download or read book Computer Vision and Image Processing written by Linda Shapiro and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1992-04-27 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Vision and Image Processing contains review papers from the Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing volume covering a large variety of vision-related topics. Organized into five parts encompassing 26 chapters, the book covers topics on image-level operations and architectures; image representation and recognition; and three-dimensional imaging. The introductory part of this book is concerned with the end-to-end performance of image gathering and processing for high-resolution edge detection. It proposes methods using mathematical morphology to provide a complete edge detection process that may be used with any slope approximating operator. This part also discusses the automatic control of low-level robot vision, presents an image partitioning method suited for parallel implementation, and describes invariant architectures for low-level vision. The subsequent two sections present significant topics on image representation and recognition. Topics covered include the use of the primitives chain code; the geometric properties of the generalized cone; efficient rendering and structural-statistical character recognition algorithms; multi-level thresholding for image segmentation; knowledge-based object recognition system; and shape decomposition method based on perceptual structure. The fourth part describes a rule-based expert system for recovering three-dimensional shape and orientation. A procedure of intensity-guided range sensing to gain insights on the concept of cooperative-and-iterative strategy is also presented in this part. The concluding part contains supplementary texts on texture segmentation using topographic labels and an improved algorithm for labeling connected components in a binary image. Additional algorithms for three-dimensional motion parameter determination and surface tracking in three-dimensional binary images are also provided.

Book Synopsis Machine Understanding by : Zbigniew Les
Download or read book Machine Understanding written by Zbigniew Les and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book discusses machine understanding (MU). This new branch of classic machine perception research focuses on perception that leads to understanding and is based on the categories of sensory objects. In this approach the visual and non-visual knowledge, in the form of visual and non-visual concepts, is used in the complex reasoning process that leads to understanding. The book presents selected new concepts, such as perceptual transformations, within the machine understanding framework, and uses perceptual transformations to solve perceptual problems (visual intelligence tests) during understanding, where understanding is regarded as an ability to solve complex visual problems described in the authors’ previous books. Thanks to the uniqueness of the research topics covered, the book appeals to researchers from a wide range of disciplines, especially computer science, cognitive science and philosophy.
Book Synopsis Syntactic and Structural Pattern Recognition by : Horst Bunke
Download or read book Syntactic and Structural Pattern Recognition written by Horst Bunke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1990 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is currently the only one on this subject containing both introductory material and advanced recent research results. It presents, at one end, fundamental concepts and notations developed in syntactic and structural pattern recognition and at the other, reports on the current state of the art with respect to both methodology and applications. In particular, it includes artificial intelligence related techniques, which are likely to become very important in future pattern recognition. The book consists of individual chapters written by different authors. The chapters are grouped into broader subject areas like “Syntactic Representation and Parsing”, “Structural Representation and Matching”, “Learning”, etc. Each chapter is a self-contained presentation of one particular topic. In order to keep the original flavor of each contribution, no efforts were undertaken to unify the different chapters with respect to notation. Naturally, the self-containedness of the individual chapters results in some redundancy. However, we believe that this handicap is compensated by the fact that each contribution can be read individually without prior study of the preceding chapters. A unification of the spectrum of material covered by the individual chapters is provided by the subject and author index included at the end of the book.
Book Synopsis Object Recognition by : M. Bennamoun
Download or read book Object Recognition written by M. Bennamoun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatie object recognition is a multidisciplinary research area using con cepts and tools from mathematics, computing, optics, psychology, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and various other disciplines. The purpose of this research is to provide a set of coherent paradigms and algorithms for the purpose of designing systems that will ultimately emulate the functions performed by the Human Visual System (HVS). Hence, such systems should have the ability to recognise objects in two or three dimensions independently of their positions, orientations or scales in the image. The HVS is employed for tens of thousands of recognition events each day, ranging from navigation (through the recognition of landmarks or signs), right through to communication (through the recognition of characters or people themselves). Hence, the motivations behind the construction of recognition systems, which have the ability to function in the real world, is unquestionable and would serve industrial (e.g. quality control), military (e.g. automatie target recognition) and community needs (e.g. aiding the visually impaired). Scope, Content and Organisation of this Book This book provides a comprehensive, yet readable foundation to the field of object recognition from which research may be initiated or guided. It repre sents the culmination of research topics that I have either covered personally or in conjunction with my PhD students. These areas include image acqui sition, 3-D object reconstruction, object modelling, and the matching of ob jects, all of which are essential in the construction of an object recognition system.
