Book excerpt: This paper describes a technique for ordering wildlife information according to physical strata and vegetative structure so that a variety of statistical analyses can be accomplished. Individual wildlife species are assigned to cells in a species-habitat matrix on the basis of feeding and breeding activities within physical strata in representative types of vegetative cover: the cells within the species-habitat matrix are assigned numeric values. The statistical analyses are thus based on the areas that individual species occupy within the species-habitat matrix. Computer graphics are used to represent the structure of wildlife communities and cluster analysis routines are used to describe the potential wildlife guilds that may exist in different vegetative communities. Different numbers of wildlife guilds will occur in species and presumably also of wildlife guilds present within a type of cover is modified by physical attributes of the vegetation within that cover type. The products of this analytical technique may be suitable for evaluating habitat quality, impact assessments, regional inventories and assessments of wildlife resources, and land-use planning activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the continental United States, one can identify 20 distinct forest cover types. Most of these are to be found on federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Those responsible for the management of trees that form the 20 different cover types and the diversity of forest wildlife that reside in them must have a solid grounding in concepts of forest management, especially silviculture, as well as concepts of wildlife management, in order to integrate both as part of any effective natural resource management plan. Forest Wildlife Ecology and Habitat Management provides both foresters and wildlife biologists responsible for managing forest resources with an integrated understanding of the relationship between forests and wildlife. Based on David Patton’s 50 years of experience as a forester and wildlife biologist, the book shows readers how to look at forests as ecological systems and wildlife as part of the energy flow and nutrient cycling process within those systems. He offers readers a fundamental understanding of the natural processes that occur in a forest taking into consideration vegetation, water, and the natural effects of climate and time. He then provides a biological perspective on wildlife, discussing reproduction, behavior, feeding habits, and mobility. He also discusses the various influences on forests and wildlife by both natural and human-caused events. Covering those forest types included in the U.S. National Atlas, and associating over 1,100 wildlife species with 20 major forest types in 48 states, Professor Patton provides recommendations for ways to restore and maintain wildlife habitat by direct and indirect coordination. Towards this end, the author — Evaluates various approaches to integrate forestry and wildlife management Offers a number of practical management strategies, emphasizing a progressive holistic approach Presents the FAAWN (Forest Attributes and Wildlife Needs) data model A CD-ROM is included that provides readers with easy-to-use software that will help them consider more than 63,000 potential associations among forest components and wildlife within the FAAWN model.

Book excerpt: One egg from each of 440 clutches of eggs of 19 species of Alaskan seabirds collected in 1973-76 was analyzed for organochlorine residues. Both frequency of occurrence and concentration of residues in the eggs differed geographically and by species, apparently reflecting non-uniform distribution of organochlorines in the environment, dissimilar feeding habits and migration patterns of the species, or metabolic differences among the species.

Book excerpt: Nonconsumptive outdoor recreation has increased greatly in recent years, and there is growing concern about the effects of such activities on wildlife and wildlife habitats. Unfortunately, information concerning these effects is scare and widely scattered. To stimulate research and assist resource planners and managers in utilizing available information, an annotated bibliography of human-wildlife interactions is provided. The report reviews interactions between wildlife and humans participating in nonconsumptive outdoor recreation activities. Also provided are indexes to authors, species, keywords and geographic regions; an annotated list of keywords; and a list of bibliographies on related topics.
