Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battle Focused Training, FM 7-1, is the Army's doctrinal foundation for how to train, and it is applicable to all units and organizations of the Army. It explains how the Army assesses, plans, prepares, and executes training and leader development; it is critical to all the Army does. The goal of this manual is to create leaders who know how to think and apply enduring training principles to their units and organizations. FM 7-0 introduces the training cycle, the linkage of Army training and leader development, and the three domains where training occurs—the operational, institutional, and self-development domains. FM 7-1 defines The Army Training System, outlines who is responsible for training and training support, and describes how to conduct training. This top-to-bottom understanding of training—ranging from policy and resources allocation at Headquarters, Department of the Army to unit and organization methods—is critical to executing training successfully and to linking the three domains where training occurs. The training doctrine in this manual will shape Army training regulations and support unit and organization training plans. The emphasis is on teaching leaders to think through the training process, as opposed to simply following a prescribed method. There is no training model or strategy that can achieve warfighting readiness in a unit without intensive leadership to build both competence and confidence. FM 7-1 builds on task, condition, and standards-based training. Knowing the task, assessing the level of proficiency against the standard, and developing a sustaining or improving training plan is the essence of all Army training and development. But warfighting readiness is about more than just technical competence. It is about developing confidence through trust—soldier-to soldier, leader-to-led, and unit-to-unit—and the will to succeed. It is about leadership. Understanding how to conduct tough, realistic training at every echelon of the Army sets the foundation for successful multi echelon, joint, interagency, and coalition operations. Leaders train the unit and organizational capabilities required to fight and win across the full spectrum of operations. This manual provides leaders with the doctrinal guidelines for how to train, and is the basis for successful training and operations. Soldiers have never let the nation fail—it is essential to train soldiers and units to uphold the Army's nonnegotiable contract with the American people—to fight and win the nation's wars, decisively.

The text introduces readers to the format of the new TSE(R), typical questions, and scoring criteria. The second edition of Toward Speaking Excellence includes actual student responses that are used or modified to highlight specific characteristics of effective communication. Two complete sample TSE(R)-like tests are included for further practice. Also provided are practice with some of the skills that, while no longer tested on the TSE(R), are key to sounding more native-like and fluent. Toward Speaking Excellence may be used as an individual study tool or as a course text. While the material is directed toward the TSE(R) and SPEAK(R) tests, the communication strategies presented will prepare students for other types of oral exams (including the TAST(R), interviews, and performance tests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique approach to the challenges of complex environmental systems Environmental Transport Processes, Second Edition provides much-needed guidance on mass transfer principles in environmental engineering. It focuses on working with uncontrolled conditions involving biological and physical systems, offering examples from diverse fields, including mass transport, kinetics, wastewater treatment, and unit processes. This new edition is fully revised and updated, incorporating modern approaches and practice problems at the end of chapters, making the Second Edition more concise, accessible, and easy to use. The book discusses the fundamentals of transport processes occurring in natural environments, with special emphasis on working at the biological physical interface. It considers transport and kinetics in terms of systems that involve microorganisms, along with in-depth coverage of particles, size spectra, and calculations for particles that can be considered either spheres or fractals. The book's treatment of particles as fractals is especially unique and the Second Edition includes a new section on exoelectrogenic biofilms. It also addresses dispersion in natural and engineered systems unlike any other book on the subject. Readers will learn to tackle with confidence complex environmental systems and make transport calculations in heterogeneous environments with mixtures of chemicals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil and Sediment Remediation discusses in detail a whole set of remediative technologies currently available to minimise their impact. Technologies for the treatment of soils and sediments in-situ (landfarming, bioscreens, bioventing, nutrient injection, phytoremediation) and ex-situ (landfarming, bio-heap treatment, soil suspension reactor) will be discussed. The microbiological, process technological and socio-economical aspects of these technologies will be addressed. Special attention will be given to novel biotechnological processes that utilise sulfur cycle conversions, e.g. sulfur and heavy metal removal from soils. Also the potential of phytoremediation will be highlighted. In addition, treatment schemes for the clean-up of polluted megasites, e.g. harbours and Manufactured Gaswork Plants (MGP), will be elaborated. The aim of Soil and Sediment Remediation is to introduce the reader in: the biogeochemical characteristics of soil and sediments- new techniques to study soil/sediment processes (molecular probes, microelectrodes, NMR) clean up technologies for soils polluted with organic (PAH, NAPL, solvents) or inorganic (heavy metals) pollutants- preventative and remediative strategies and technologies available in environmental engineering novel process applications and bioreactor designs for bioremediation the impact of soil pollution on society and its economic importance.
