Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis aims to evaluate different trading strategies in the crude oil market. WTI crude oil futures contracts from 1989 to 2015 are analyzed and compared to a benchmark, which is always invested in the first in line contract. The analysis includes technical trading, long-only and long-short strategies, which are based on ideas from the literature as well as findings within this thesis. The performance of the tested strategies is evaluated on an absolute US Dollar basis. In order to understand the riskiness of the strategy, the standard deviation of daily profits and losses as well as the 5% expected shortfall are computed. Furthermore, using an adjusted Sharpe ratio, the different strategies are also compared in terms of the risk-return characteristics. Overall, results indicate that the 2 long-short strategies, namely the Regime Changing Strategy as well as the Carry Based Trading Strategy, lead to significant better risk-return results than the Benchmark Strategy. In addition, also the Dow Theory Based Strategy shows impressive results in terms of profitability. In-sample optimized moving average strategies perform well, however out-of-sample testing shows that the performance heavily depends on the chosen parameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the debatable success of technical trading rules, through the years, on the trending energy market of crude oil. In particular, the large universe of 7846 trading rules proposed by Sullivan et al. (1999), divided into five families (filter rules, moving averages, support and resistance rules, channel breakouts, and on-balance volume averages), is applied to the daily prices of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light, sweet crude oil futures as well as the United States Oil (USO) fund, from 2006 onwards. We employ the k-familywise error rate (k-FWER) and false discovery rate (FDR) techniques proposed by Romano and Wolf (2007) and Bajgrowicz and Scaillet (2012) respectively, accounting for data snooping in order to identify significantly profitable trading strategies. Our findings explain that there is no persistent nature in rules performance, contrary to the in-sample outstanding results, although tiny profits can be achieved in some periods. Overall, our results seem to be in favor of interim market inefficiencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the United States ask its military to guarantee the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf? If the US security commitment is in fact strategically sound, what posture should the military adopt to protect Persian Gulf oil? Charles L. Glaser and Rosemary A. Kelanic present a collection of new essays from a multidisciplinary team of political scientists, historians, and economists that provide answers to these questions. Contributors delve into a range of vital economic and security issues: the economic costs of a petroleum supply disruption, whether or not an American withdrawal increases the chances of oil-related turmoil, the internal stability of Saudi Arabia, budgetary costs of the forward deployment of US forces, and the possibility of blunting the effects of disruptions with investment in alternative energy resources. The result is a series of bold arguments toward a much-needed revision of US policy toward the Persian Gulf during an era of profound change in oil markets and the balance of power in the Middle East.

We revisit this contentious question by estimating a sign-restricted structural vector autoregression (SVAR). First, using a simple storage model, we show that revisions to expectations regarding oil market fundamentals and the effect of mispricing in oil derivative markets can be observationally equivalent in a SVAR model of the world oil market à la Kilian and Murphy (2013), since both imply a positive co-movement of oil prices and inventories. Second, we impose additional restrictions on the set of admissible models embodying the assumption that the impact from noise trading shocks in oil derivative markets is temporary. Our additional restrictions effectively put a bound on the contribution of speculation to short-term oil price volatility (lying between 3 and 22 percent). This estimated short-run impact is smaller than that of flow demand shocks but possibly larger than that of flow supply shocks.
