Book excerpt: NAMED A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK IN ESSENCE MAGAZINE, THE MILLIONS AND BOOKISH "Don't Cry for Me is a perfect song."—Jesmyn Ward A Black father makes amends with his gay son through letters written on his deathbed in this wise and penetrating novel of empathy and forgiveness, for fans of Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robert Jones Jr. and Alice Walker As Jacob lies dying, he begins to write a letter to his only son, Isaac. They have not met or spoken in many years, and there are things that Isaac must know. Stories about his ancestral legacy in rural Arkansas that extend back to slavery. Secrets from Jacob's tumultuous relationship with Isaac's mother and the shame he carries from the dissolution of their family. Tragedies that informed Jacob's role as a father and his reaction to Isaac's being gay. But most of all, Jacob must share with Isaac the unspoken truths that reside in his heart. He must give voice to the trauma that Isaac has inherited. And he must create a space for the two to find peace. With piercing insight and profound empathy, acclaimed author Daniel Black illuminates the lived experiences of Black fathers and queer sons, offering an authentic and ultimately hopeful portrait of reckoning and reconciliation. Spare as it is sweeping, poetic as it is compulsively readable, Don't Cry for Me is a monumental novel about one family grappling with love's hard edges and the unexpected places where hope and healing take flight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Tears of the Black Man, award-winning author Alain Mabanckou explores what it means to be black in the world today. Mabanckou confronts the long and entangled history of Africa, France, and the United States as it has been shaped by slavery, colonialism, and their legacy today. Without ignoring the injustices and prejudice still facing blacks, he distances himself from resentment and victimhood, arguing that focusing too intensely on the crimes of the past is limiting. Instead, it is time to ask: Now what? Embracing the challenges faced by ethnic minority communities today, The Tears of the Black Man looks to the future, choosing to believe that the history of Africa has yet to be written and seeking a path toward affirmation and reconciliation.

It is how I overcame all the heartbreaking, brutal, and horrendous circumstances that I was born into in 1947. I saw it all in my first sixteen years: unbridled lust, gross immorality, damning lies, and terrible brutality by my father against me and my mother. He tried to kill me once but kept up a constant campaign of horrible abuses of my mother until I left home at sixteen. However, success is the best revenge! After three years of alcoholism, I pulled myself together and went back to school on my own. That was after I spent a year in Job Corps from 1966 to 1967. From 1975 to 1977, I went to Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville. From 1977 to 1980, I attended Virginia State University in Petersburg. I earned my BA and MA degrees. I studied above a master's at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville from 1980 to 1983. I did not graduate, but I learned valuable life lessons. I started to write in 1993 about what had happened to me over the years and how I used my dire circumstances as motivation to pick myself up and make my life better. I hope I am an example that will help others who are suffering through similar atrocities to be motivated to not give up but persevere and that they will, as I did, overcome anything they are being faced with.

Book excerpt: African Son is a record of the author’s many trips to Africa—as a Peace Corps volunteer, Fulbright scholar, teacher, and traveler—over the course of thirty years. These personal essays range from sympathetic descriptions of village life in Senegal and Cameroon to detailed accounts of the rich physical and natural worlds in Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Madagascar to a mock-curriculum vitae for a Cameroonian man whose skill-set is surprisingly extensive. A work of creative non-fiction, African Son describes individual and, later, family experiences in a number of African locations, from villages to major urban centers and from desert to thick, tropical forest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about events in my country, Sierra Leone, from the time it attains independence from the British to present-day life in Sierra Leone .The aim of the book is to chart the issue of corruption in Sierra Leone and the effect it is having in promoting underdevelopment in the country. Since its independence in April 27, 1961, the country has had few military and civilian governments. And throughout this period, the country has gone from crisis to crisis, and it is all man-made. The country has gone through both military and civilian dictatorship, which resulted in a civil war that lasted for ten years. The main cause of this crisis is the issue of corruption and nepotism. In Sierra Leone is not what you know but is who you know that will propel you for a brighter future. The aim of my book is to help highlight some of the corruption in the country and how the civilian population will help to fight it so we can put our beloved Sierra Leone, with its huge natural resources like gold, diamonds, and oil, to full use for the benefit of everyone in the country. Sierra Leone deserves to be one of the most developed nations on earth, but because of the greed of certain people in high places, the country is ranked as one of the least developed countries in the world. If countries like Denmark who only produce cheese can be counted in the league of developed nations, surely Sierra Leone and many other African countries can take a leaf from those Scandinavian countries.

Decades later, some of their children could finally know of a father's identity and the life he had led after the war. Just one would be able to find an embrace in his arms, and just one would arrive at her father's American grave after 73 years. But they could now understand their own Dutch lives in the context of their fathers' lives in America.
