Book excerpt: The small village in Pomerania in northern Germany provided a peaceful haven for the childhood years of author Ingeborg E. Ryals. But in 1939 the beginning of World War II irrevocably changed her idyllic life. In this memoir Ryals shares her first hand experiences as the war began to affect every aspect of her life. At the age of fifteen, she had to dig trenches behind the front lines and spent many days hiding in fear of the Soviet Army as it invaded and pillaged her village. Diphtheria and typhoid epidemics swept the country. She survived a bout of diphtheria but lingered near death for days on end with typhoid fever. There was little food to sustain them. At the age of eighteen, she was shipped to a labor camp operated by the Russian military on an island in the Baltic Sea. Ryals also recounts her escape and her eventual marriage to an American. With photos included, The Tears of War narrates a very real story of the tragedy of war. It shows Ryals perseverance and her ability to overcome obstacles in an effort to survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frozen Tears unfolds the events that led to Germany's military invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and explores Germany's advance on Leningrad and the blockade that was established against the city. This story examines the lives of the city's inhabitants who suffered from the consequences of the siege that finally ended in 1944. By this time more than one million Leningraders had lost their lives. The lives of public figures are often used by historians to tell the events of the past. The decisions they made and the actions that were taken are discussed and analyzed. However, the experiences of commoners--men, women, and children not mentioned in textbooks--often illustrate better the events of the past. In Frozen Tears, Albert Pleysier has taken the contents of diaries, letters, essays, and interviews written or given by persons who lived in Leningrad during the siege and placed them in their historical setting. The result is a very personal history of the siege of Leningrad.

Book excerpt: An Account of one Woman's Courage, Caring, and Generosity in the Face of the Inhumane Brigitte Bardot—a global icon of French cinema—has used her fame to give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Leaving the spotlight of stardom, she has dedicated her time and fortune to promoting the welfare of animals, both domestic and wild, around the world. Over the past forty years, Bardot has evolved from an international film icon of the glamorous sixties to an icon of that of a crusader for animal rights, forming her own foundation and meeting with leaders from around the world and lobbying for legislation to protect animals. In this poignant memoir, she uncovers the struggles of her decades-long battle—detailing the too few victories and the heartbreaking defeats—and revealing herself as never before seen through her reflections about nature, herself as a superstar, and the passion that has driven her away from glamour of her previous fame toward the humble calling of serving others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood, Tears, and IV's, a memoir of a combat medic, explores the challenging and emotional experiences of one twenty-four-year-old combat medic serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, based out of Vicenza, Italy. Sergeant Elissa Lonsdale, the author, was sent to Iraq on the Fourth of July, 2003. She knew the situation she was going into would be a difficult one. Based on her journal she kept while she was in Iraq, this book details her most memorable situations. Some are positive, and others were difficult to put into words. With a major part of the Army still deployed and continuing to deploy, Sergeant Lonsdale wanted to share her memories, as they will stick with her always. "You realize when you get back that there is no way to erase bad memories, only ways to try and make sense of them." Sergeant Lonsdale participated in the treatment of combat casualties, including soldiers, civilians and Iraqis. She recounts in this book her many strange date-related events, such as when her convoy was ambushed on her birthday; she lost a fellow medic to a stroke; another soldier and friend was electrocuted doing his job on Christmas Eve; many missions to villages surrounded by Iraqi children; rendering care to the sick and wounded; and the bond she formed with the medics she was deployed with. Sergeant Lonsdale is still serving on active duty in the Army and currently holds a position in an emergency room as a shift leader.

Book excerpt: America fought to gain independence from British colonial power between 1763 and 1783. It wasn't just a battle won by American revolutionaries. It was also lost by the British. Combining fascinating scenes of dissent in domestic British politics with graphic descriptions of the war in America, Weintraub's narrative is a page-turning story of military and political misfortune. As George Washington managed to hold his ragged and overmatched Continental army together and create a nation, his opponents -- principally King George III and his prime minister, Lord North -- themselves faced increasing resistance to the war's brutality and costs. Their opponents in Parliament and the press gradually turned pacifist and sympathetic to the Americans, and were unwilling to bear the costs of the Empire in America. As the tide turned on the battlefield, the 'iron tears' of muskets and cannon shed by the redcoats were matched by tearful protests in London.
