This spiral-bound lab book demonstrates all aspects of plant growth and development, while teaching scientific investigation. Activities focus on points in the plant's life cycle, variation and inheritance concepts, and environmental factors. A Science Exploration Flowchart in each activity stresses important process skills.

Download or read book Plant Teachers written by Jeremy Narby and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trailblazing anthropologist and an indigenous Amazonian healer explore the convergence of science and shamanism “The dose makes the poison,” says an old adage, reminding us that substances have the potential to heal or to harm, depending on their use. Although Western medicine treats tobacco as a harmful addictive drug, it is considered medicinal by indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest. In its unadulterated form, it holds a central place in their repertoire of traditional medicines. Along with ayahuasca, tobacco forms a part of treatments designed to heal the body, stimulate the mind, and inspire the soul with visions. In Plant Teachers, anthropologist Jeremy Narby and traditional healer Rafael Chanchari Pizuri hold a cross-cultural dialogue that explores the similarities between ayahuasca and tobacco, the role of these plants in indigenous cultures, and the hidden truths they reveal about nature. Juxtaposing and synthesizing two worldviews, Plant Teachers invites readers on a wide-ranging journey through anthropology, botany, and biochemistry, while raising tantalizing questions about the relationship between science and other ways of knowing.
Book Synopsis Demonstrated Ways to Use Rapid Cycling "Brassica Rapa" in Ecology Instruction and Research by : Martin G. Kelly
Download or read book Demonstrated Ways to Use Rapid Cycling "Brassica Rapa" in Ecology Instruction and Research written by Martin G. Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Science Foundation has a long supported the use of "Wisconsin Fast Plants" (rapid cycling "B. rapa") in the teaching of Biology (K-12). I believe that the opportunity is at hand for biologists to significantly extend past efforts made by our colleagues at the K-12 level to higher education. Biology faculty can realize the many practical benefits of RCBr as a model organism with known genotype and phenotype for student research in the lab and in the field. One area of investigative student experience that is significantly lacking, is the development of ecological investigations using Fast Plants. Here, I demonstrate how I incorporated Fast Plants into three college courses to provide students with: (1) An authentic and enriching research experience. (2) A link between "classroom and professional practice". (3) A connection between what students read and reality. (4) Experience with Fast Plants as a model system for their research and teaching. (Contains 6 color photographs, 2 bar graphs, 2 tables, a list of 5 "helpful publications," and a list of 6 "helpful resources.").
