Sections 4 and 5 present teachers views about the evaluation of their work and how this affects them and also their school. Australian teachers report that they need development in key areas of education and that evaluation is not identifying or addressing different levels of effectiveness. The benefits of school evaluation and teacher evaluation are highlighted in Section 6. Teachers report that school and teacher evaluations can have an effective impact on classroom teaching. Concluding comments are presented in Section 7. This report presents the views of Australian teachers about the current state of teacher evaluation and development, and argues that extensive change is required. This will be the first in a series of Grattan Institute reports on these issues. Future reports will include proposals for a new system of teacher evaluation and development.
