Parent involvement by itself will not ensure academic success of children, but, combined with many strategies, including a clear understanding of the differences between an inner city school environment and a middle class school setting, effective teaching, sound and relevant curricula, safe and secure learning environment, and visionary leadership, children attending inner city schools can be just as effective as those in middle class school settings.

Book excerpt: High parental involvement has been linked to increases in student achievement and engagement in school (Moore, 1992; Swap, 1993; Henderson and Berla, 1994; Fuller and Olsen, 1998). Schools with large populations of low-income students or students of color often have difficulties in engaging a majority of parents due to a variety of social and cultural differences among parents and teachers. While the literature on parent involvement cites many examples of challenges to parent involvement and suggestions to overcome those challenges, few models of extensive parent involvement in urban, public high schools have been described. The Boston Arts Academy is one such example. Parent involvement was studied at this urban public high school through staff and parent interviews, documentation, and observation of family events at the school. Boston Arts Academy engages a vast majority of its parents in school-based activities through multiple events and entry points, a welcoming school environment, and frequent communication among staff and parents. By focusing on building a diverse, inclusive culture and encouraging parents to take part in the school, the academy engages parents with varied prior experiences and dispositions toward parent involvement. Parents express that the school creates an open, welcoming, and informative environment. Findings from this case study suggest several key approaches that other schools may adopt: (1) Developing a coherent school vision that focuses on including families of varying dispositions as part of the team; (2) Supporting staff commitment to knowing students well and regularly communicating with parents; (3) Creating multiple, diverse opportunities for parent involvement, and support for parents to avail themselves of these opportunities; and (4) Allocating staffing resources toward facilitating parent communication and involvement. He was given an infinite prescription to knowledge by his Creator, his Father. This was the first example of parental involvement. As time has passed the educational profession has evolved and changed from a rigid male dominated activity to a mosaic of many different integral players, which we call stakeholders. Not only have the players/stakeholders changed but also the strategies and techniques that educators use to disseminate the information from teachers to students have changed. Many students lack the necessary motivation and tenacity to meet the educational challenges directly and perform to their highest level intellectually. Instead, today students require/need something extra to help them excel academically and behaviorally. This action research project (Bogdan & Biklen, 1998; Creswell, 2003) investigates the impact that opening a parent/family center in an urban high school will have on increasing the level of parental involvement in their children's educational activities of Davenport High School. This action research project also sought to determine if the presence of a parent/family center would change the perception that students and parents have toward education. Research (Abrams, 2002; Comer, 1998, 1992-93; Epstein, 1986, 1994, 1995; Fehrmann et al., 1987; Finn, 1998; Jesse, 1998; & Lofthouse, 1999) supports the assertion that today's students need their parents, guardians, caregivers actively involved in their lives academically. The National Parent Teacher Association supports parents as partners, and as their students "first teachers." From this study I have come to the conclusion that parental involvement is vital to the success of students academically and behaviorally. When utilized correctly, parents can assist urban schools in their efforts to become competitive in preparing students to enter the workforce.
