Research methods include the creation and administration of a three-question survey administered to school students (grades 7and 8) who attend an upper Midwestern middle school. Survey results are interpreted referencing attachment and self-systems theory. Research findings suggest that teachers must focus on and address both academic and personal needs to create meaningful teacher-student relationships that are perceived by students as caring.

Book excerpt: With the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (2002) schools are challenged by high-stakes testing and the need to maintain a highly qualified teaching force. The focus of discussion is often effective interventions and strategies to assist students to become academically successful. However, a number of researchers (Kaplan & Owings, 2000; Kohn, 2005; Noddings, 1995a, 2005c) have agreed that there is more to teaching and learning than is represented by scores on a single test. Authors such as Noddings (1984, 2005b) and Kohn (1990, 2005) have discussed the importance of an ethic of care in the academic success of students. An explanatory mixed method design was chosen for this research because the use of both quantitative and qualitative data resulted in a better understanding of the research problem (Creswell & Clark, 2007). In phase one of this study, an ordinary least square regression technique was used to determine the relationship between the level of teacher empathy and their students' perception of care. In phase two, the researcher completed a line-by-line analysis of all qualitative data to determine emergent categories and themes. Results of the study revealed the importance of empathy in creating a caring classroom environment and challenging teacher educators to provide training and field experiences that promote and enhance empathy and care in the classroom.

Book excerpt: There is evidence that demonstrates the important role both parents and teachers play in the successful transition of children to middle school. While there is significant research into how both impact student success, there is a paucity of research into what teachers perceive parents believe are the expectations and concerns of their child as they transition to middle school. The purpose of this study was to use descriptive statistics obtained from surveys to explore what parents believed were the expectations and concerns of their child regarding the upcoming transition to middle school. Additionally, the study examined what teachers perceived parents believed their child's expectations and concerns were as they were about to transition to middle school. Finally, a comparison was done to find similarities and differences between the two groups. A survey was administered to 72 parents attending a new school orientation for incoming middle school students at a small rural school in Ohio. The same survey was administered to 16 middle school teaching staff members from the school the students would be attending. Parents and teachers identified both perceived academic and social concerns of children about to enter middle school. This included concerns such as getting good grades and having hard teachers as well as participating in social events and extracurricular activities. Both parents and teachers tended to have a holistic view of the identified items of excitement and worry concerning the transition to middle school. This indicated there was no major focus on overall academic or social concerns regarding the transition to middle school but rather a concern for the overall wellbeing of the student which is an important factor in establishing a successful school climate and dealing with the stresses faced by middle school students today.

This study utilized focus group interviews to allow thirty-one middle school students from two rural school districts in Southeast Texas the opportunity to discuss attributes of caring they perceive as important for schools. A male student group and a female student group from each school were interviewed to allow a wide range of perceptions from the students. The interviews were analyzed and coded for common themes. The twelve common themes that emerged from the interviews were: characteristics of caring teachers; attributes of a caring principal; trust; respect; motivation; high expectations; the classroom environment; safety; equity; connectedness; voice; and the need for change. Four other isolated themes emerged: friendship; family; support; and relationships between students. The voices of the student participants present an honest and insightful dialogue on the topic of caring in two rural public middle schools.
