Book excerpt: The shortage of teachers, especially in specialized areas, such as special education, has prompted a shift in policy to expand the type of teacher preparation programs. Where once there existed only higher education preparation programs, today there are alternative routes to preparation and certification. The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions and feelings of professional preparedness of alternatively certified special education teachers, as reflected in their initial years of practice. This study uses a mixed-methods research design and includes a survey and semi-structured interviews as the methodologies of choice. Findings from this study are: (1) novice traditionally certified teachers felt more thoroughly prepared to teach in the theoretical aspects of the profession (student learning pace, teaching to student multiple modalities, and student pedagogical knowledge) and making a direct positive impact on student learning and development; (2) novice alternatively certified novice teachers felt more prepared for the practical impact to student learning of the profession (multiple methods of assessment, instructional strategies, teaching a specialized curriculum, and using a core curriculum); and (3) overall, both sets of teachers felt that their initial program prepared them with the basic knowledge of the profession

Many school districts are addressing increased student achievement by hiring and retaining effective teachers. Teacher effectiveness and student achievement are both influenced by teacher perception. Teachers with positive perceptions have been shown to contribute to increased student achievement and are perceived to be effective educators. Special education teachers hold both positive and negative perceptions about inclusion. In addition to varied perceptions of inclusion, teachers have taken different routes to obtain special education teacher certification. The purpose of this causal-comparative, quantitative study was to determine whether a statistically significant difference exists in inclusion perceptions between special education teachers who have earned their special education certification through a traditional certification program and those who have done so through an alternative certification program. A random sample of 112 special education teachers, obtained from a market research sample aggregator, participated in the study through an online anonymous survey. The Opinions Relative to the Integration of Students with Disabilities (Antonak & Larrivee, 1995) instrument measured participants' inclusion perceptions. Responses to the survey instrument were compiled and analyzed using an independent samples t-test to identify differences in inclusion perceptions between the two groups. The results of the study indicated that there is no significant difference in perceptions toward inclusion, as measured by the ORI scale, between special education teachers with traditional teacher certification and those with alternative teacher certification.

Book excerpt: Students with disabilities are a specific group of the student population that are guaranteed rights that allow them to receive a free and unbiased education in an environment with their non-disabled peers. The importance of this study relates to providing students with disabilities with the opportunity to receive instruction from the most efficient and prepared educators. The purpose of this study is to determine how specific factors influence special education belief systems. In particular, educators who provide science instruction in whole group or small group classrooms in a large metropolitan area in Georgia possess specific beliefs about their ability to provide meaningful instruction. Data was collected through a correlational study completed by educators through an online survey website. The SEBEST quantitative survey instrument was used on a medium sample size (approximately 120 teachers) in a large metropolitan school district. The selected statistical analysis was the Shapiro-Wilk and Mann-Whitney in order to determine if any correlation exists among preservice training and perceived self-efficacy of secondary special education teachers in the content area of science. The results of this study showed that special education teachers in the content area of science have a higher perceived self-efficacy if they have completed an alternative certification program. Other variables tested did not show any statistical significance. Further research can be centered on the analysis of actual teacher efficacy, year end teacher efficacy measurements, teacher stipends, increased recruitment, and special education teachers of multiple content areas

Book excerpt: Teacher efficacy is a motivational construct that suggests teachers' beliefs in their perceived efficacy affects the learning environments they create and the academic achievement of their students. Perceived self-efficacy affects the effort and persistence teachers exude during obstacles, such as when students exhibit challenging behaviors, regardless if the teacher is alternatively or traditionally certified. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to test the construct of self-efficacy grounded in the social cognitive theory and compare a teachers' route to licensure (traditional or alternative) to perceived self-efficacy for special education teachers (SETs) of students with emotional disabilities exhibiting challenging behaviors. A convenience sample of SETs at a regional program in southeastern United States was surveyed using the long form of the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES). Data from 45 surveys were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance and independent samples t test. Results of the study indicated there is no significant difference in the perceived self-efficacy among traditionally and alternatively certified SETs of students with emotional disabilities exhibiting challenging behaviors. School administrators must continue to find ways to support special education teachers through mentoring, trainings, and professional development. Recommendations include research to determine if professional development leads to increased perceived self-efficacy.

In-depth semi-structured interviews conducted with eight directors of special education---two each from small, medium, and large school districts and two from charter schools---as well as survey responses from 50 special education directors resulted in data that comprised a mixed methods study. Based on the research, conclusions were drawn about the perceived differences among special education directors regarding the preparedness and proficiency of teachers who were alternatively certified to teach special education in Idaho compared to traditionally trained and fully certified teachers. Participants offered viewpoints regarding human resource decisions related to special education teachers. The study found an overwhelming preference by directors to hire traditionally trained and certified special educators based on preparedness and proficiency. However, there was a willingness to hire alternatively certified special education teachers due to the shortages of teachers in the special education field and the large number of open positions to fill across the state. The results of the study provided a narrative account of recruiting, hiring, mentoring, supervising, and evaluating alternatively certified special education teachers in Idaho. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for partnerships to be established between institutions of higher learning, the state department of education, and local agencies to provide certification programs featuring the opportunity for potential teachers to earn salaries during on-the-job training. Various alternative certification options should continue to be allowed in Idaho, so available special education teacher positions can be filled. Similarly, universities should continue to offer certification programs for teachers desiring special education certification. Mentorship is of critical necessity for new special education teachers. Educational leaders should make every effort to ensure appropriate and effective mentoring and supervision to these new teachers. Paying close attention to and tracking the progress of participants entering into alternative certification programs would provide rich and important data allowing for generalizations to be formed regarding the backgrounds of those best suited for success in such preparation programs.
