Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, a comprehensive history of Nigerian Education, from early times right through to the time of publication, had long been needed by all concerned with Education in Nigeria, students, teachers and educational administrators. No one was better qualified than Professor Fafunwa to provide such a book, and in doing so he gave due emphasis to the beginnings of Education in its three main stages of indigenous, Muslim and Christian Education. Nigerian Education had been considered all too often as a comparatively recent phenomenon, but this book points out from the start that ‘Education is as old as Man himself in Africa’ and that both Islam and Christianity were comparative newcomers in the field. A historical treatment of these three strands which have combined to make up the modern Educational system was vital to a clear understanding of what was needed for the future, and most of the first half of the book is concerned with these Educational beginnings. The imposing of a foreign colonial system on this framework did not always lead to a happy fusion of the systems, and the successes and the failures are examined in detail. There was no shortage of documentary evidence in the form of reports and statistics during the decades prior to publication, but this evidence was frequently scattered and inaccessible to the student, so that the author’s careful selection of key evidence and reports, often drawn from his own personal experience, will be invaluable for those wishing to trace the development of Education in Nigeria up to the early 1970s. A knowledge of the history and development of the Nigerian Education system, of the numerous and intensely varied personalities and beliefs which have combined and often conflicted to shape it, is indispensable to all students in colleges and universities studying to become teachers. It is this knowledge that Professor Fafunwa set out to provide, drawing on his wide experience as teacher writer and educationalist.

The conception, incubation and delivery of any national development policy, as well as the reform and implementation of extant policies, are driven by the quality of teachers and their products within a functional educational system. Indeed, national and global models of development, including the millennium development goals revolve round the frames of quality education, beginning with teacher education. It is therefore important to have functional teacher education systems in Africa to help its citizens explore the networking of the world as a global village. This is achievable through a systematic mobilization of national resources and visible commitment to the development of a modernized cadre of scientific and technological manpower. This book is a rich exposition of theories and praxes essential for the development of teacher education in Africa. The book has immense benefits for teachers, teacher trainers, funding agencies, other stakeholders and policy makers.

Book excerpt: Language, Literacy, and Learning in Primary Schools is a synthesis of the findings arising from four years of policy research and development in Nigeria's primary schools that focused on the gap between what teachers should know and be able to do, and the realities of teaching and learning in classrooms. It begins by critically examining the outcomes of primary schooling as measured by learning achievement results from national assessments, and by identifying some core learning problems for Nigerian primary school children. It reviews the findings from recent research reports that studied teaching and learning processes in primary school classrooms, and it identifies the pedagogical issues in primary classrooms that contribute to poor learning achievements. This report describes a research and development program that set out to improve teaching and learning in core learning skill areas of the curriculum. This study identifies priority areas for teachers' professional development. It suggests a policy framework for the continuing professional development of primary school teachers, including the initial preparation of teachers and their induction into teaching. It proposes medium and long-term strategies to bring about the desired changes in teaching and learning through school-based approaches to teacher development.

Book excerpt: This book, PRE-PRIMARY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA: METHODS FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING, adopts an integrated approach to understanding and teaching pre-primary school children. Though not so common in Nigeria, this approach is practiced in countries around the world and it yields the highest dividends and most sustained gains for children, their families and communities. The early childhood curriculum guidelines which address all the critical areas of early childhood care, such as we have in Nigeria, may be better implemented by using the integrated approach. In the introduction the book highlights some specific areas prescribed by the 2005 National Policy for Integrated Early Childhood Development (IECD) in Nigeria. These include: (a) Curriculum Innovations (b) Facilitating Innovations in curriculum, teaching and learning activities and hobbies (c) Specific roles and functions of education which include ensuring compliance and innovations in minimum standards and prescriptions, especially as they relate to IECD curriculum development programs and activities. [See Chapter 1] To achieve these prescriptions and other objectives, the book presents different ways of learning by pre-school children through play way methods using many activities from different themes with examples and illustrations. It shows how these themes and goals are achieved using the integrated approach and through play and creativity in the classroom. It shows how the classroom is innovatively and creatively organized and arranged with different learning and interest centres to facilitate learning and the achievement of the stated objectives. In summary, the book is designed to provide the teacher of young children a practical and result-oriented avenue for implementing the best quality education at this level, based on any available curriculum guide and more. The book includes detailed discussions on various methods and procedures for teaching various topic areas for pre-school learning. It emphasizes the play way method as opposed to lecture method or talk-and-chalk way of teaching, which is not suitable for young children. Play and its uses and various components are highlighted. The book illustrates how the use of learning and interest centres helps children enjoy learning and develop as total individuals and how this makes them become the best they can be and develop interest and love for school and learning.

What kind of knowledge do teachers need in order to facilitate these experiences for children? And what kind of experiences do teachers need to develop this knowledge? A Good Teacher in Every Classroom addresses these questions by examining the core concepts and central pedagogies that should be at the heart of any teacher education program—and recommends the policy changes needed to ensure that all teachers gain access to this knowledge. This book is the result of a blue-ribbon commission sponsored by the National Academy of Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Education in Nigeria: Reflections and Global Perspectives, provides a broad overview of education in Nigeria. It recognizes the vital role education plays in the development of Nigeria and has attempted to air the concerns and call of the Nigerian public as well as educators for reform in the educational system in Nigeria. The book further recognizes that Nigerian education continues to be evolved, first into a system of Western European education and then into a global system of education. It attempts to examine the status of education in Nigeria and thereby seeks solutions by exploring Nigeria’s and global historical perspectives, current trends, and future directions regarding students and learning, teachers and teaching, the school curriculum, and administration of schools. It is expected that the comprehensive nature of the text will be beneficial to individuals in teacher preparation programs as well as those who plan to work with children in pre-kindergarten (nursery) through secondary settings. The chapter content of the book focuses on the variation of thought as to the principal objectives of educators to help students in Nigeria develop habits, skills and ideas, and help them to think. It adds to the importance of providing education to all, especially at the time when Nigeria is frankly making an eff ort to affirm democracy. For any nation to be truly democratic, it must maintain an educated electorate. Education prepares people to make informed decisions that affect the society. All children in Nigeria should, therefore, receive an education to prepare them to become effective members of the world society. This book seeks to examine and reflect on education in Nigeria and globally. “...are genuinely working in order to produce not only intelligent men and women, who will be cultured and skilled, but also the leaders who will adapt themselves to their environment, adjust themselves to the outside world and give direction and purpose to their people for the building of a modern nation, whose nationals must realize that they are destined to give leadership in many directions of human endeavour.” ~ Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, FMR President of Nigeria, speaking of progressive elements of Nigeria
