Book excerpt: Industry, business, military and other government agencies are increasingly recognizing the significance of human factors in the productivity of complex organizations. Educational institutions are no exception to this fact. It is assumed that morale and productivity are related to the managerial style of the supervisor. Leaders are faced with the challenge of directing the work group toward the target of increased productivity while at the same time maximizing member satisfaction. The basic research problem of this study was to investigate the relationship between leadership style of high school principals (in terms of their Concern for Production and Concern for People) and certain dimensions of teacher morale. The null hypothesis which guided this study was that there was no significant relationship between teacher perceptions of administrative behavior and teacher morale. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 132 teachers from ten high schools in the state of Oregon. The results are based on 126 returns, 90 male and 36 female respondents. Principal Leadership Style Questionnaire was used to measure two dimensions (Concern for People and Concern for Production) of administrative behavior. Purdue Teacher Opinionaire was used to measure ten factors of teacher morale. All hypotheses were tested at .05 level of confidence. The first primary hypothesis asserting that there would be no partial correlation between administrative dimensions and Teacher Rapport with Principal was rejected. The second primary hypothesis that there would be no partial correlation between administrative dimensions and Satisfaction with Teaching was accepted. Partial correlation was 4ppliedto analyze the primary hypotheses by eliminating the effects of secondary hypotheses (Rapport Among Teachers, Teacher Salary, Teacher Load, Curriculum Issues, Teacher Status, Community Support of Education, School Facilities, Community Pressures, Age and Sex). T-test based on regression coefficients was applied to analyze the secondary hypotheses. Out of 20 secondary hypotheses tested, five of them were rejected. Analysis of the primary and secondary hypotheses concluded that Curriculum Issues, Rapport with Principal and Teacher Salary are positively related to both the dimensions of administrative behavior. Rapport Among Teachers was positively related to Concern for People but not Production. Satisfaction with Teaching, Teacher Load, Teacher Status, Community Support of Education, School Facilities and Services, Community Pressures, Age and Sex of the teachers are not related to the perceived leadership style of the principal. Teachers Satisfaction with Teaching is probably related mostly to those things that happen directly with pupils inside the classroom over which principals have little influence. Results of the two administrative dimensions indicated that a principal's leadership behavior is perceived by his faculty in various ways. However, on the average, administrators were rated high on both the "Production" and "People" dimensions of administrative behavior and perceived as having a "6,7" or "7,8" leadership style as described by Blake and Mouton (1964). Analysis of this research further suggest that educational administrators investigated in this study seem to have above average skills in the eyes of their faculty in promoting both goal achievement and member satisfaction. It is recommended that the design of this study be replicated on a larger teacher population and sample size in different geographical areas.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the perceptions of principals and teachers toward conflict management at Islamic private secondary schools in Yala province, Thailand. Conflict is an inevitable situation in any organization including schools and this has challenges principals' abilities to resolve conflict. Principals who can manage conflicts in school effectively and efficiently will be able to foster a favorable teaching-learning environment which is conducive to learning. In this study, mix methods: survey and interview have been employed in order to obtain its objectives. The survey was distributed to 11 principals and 302 teachers through convenient sampling method and 6 out of 11 principals were interviewed using semi-structured interview. The findings revealed that all 11 schools confronted with some conflicts but the level of conflicts were not severe or uncontrolled and principals solved each conflict using various methods depending on the conflict situation. The types of conflict in schools were categorized into 4 types as follows: principal and teacher, teacher and teacher, teacher and student, and teacher and students' parents. There were three major causes of conflict in schools which were derived from different perceptions, ambiguously defined as responsibilities and different working styles. The methods and effective strategies that were used in managing and resolving conflict in schools depended heavily on the situation. However, two theories have been applied which were: 1) five conflict-handling modes by Thomas-Kilmann and 2) conflict cycles concept by Robinson-Difonso. As a result, several recommendations have been suggested for principals to improve the relationships between non-Muslim and Muslim teachers without bias and religious barriers, provide various complaining alternatives and state clearly teachers' responsibilities for each work. A future study has been recommended to evaluate the perception of teachers by interviewing them for eliciting information, pointing out a comparison between Islamic private secondary schools and public schools in the same provinces and comparing conflict management in schools between Muslim majority provinces such as Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat and Muslim minority province such as Bangkok.

An absence of creativity leads to the lack of art, literature, science, innovation, problem solving and progress. The recent calls in education for an implementation of authentic activities and real world problem solving necessitate students' engagements with contents of curriculum in flexible and creative ways of teaching. However, Muslims were dissatisfied with the traditional method of teaching in Islamic schools as they realized that this method of teaching does not allow for critical and creative thinking; leaving Muslim educators in a dilemma. This study is generally aimed to investigate the factors influencing creative teaching amongst the teachers of Islamic private schools (IPS). This study used quantitative research method which consisted of surveys adopted from the questionnaires for creative teaching factors and administered to 180 teachers from four selected Islamic schools. A stratified sampling technique was used in this study. The data was analysed quantitatively using the descriptive analysis, Independent Sample t-Test and ANOVA. The findings showed that the creative teaching of teachers in IPS is profoundly influenced by motivation, personal effort, learning attitude, teaching belief, school environment, teaching commitment, personal knowledge and growing up experience. In addition, the result identified the main factors influenced creative teaching of teachers at IPS was the personal efforts, teaching beliefs, teaching commitment and personal knowledge. Lastly, the findings indicated that there were statistically significant differences in some factors influencing creative teaching of teachers at IPS in terms of respondents' demography while others were not significant. Based on the findings, the researcher suggested the need for a solid body of experienced creative professional in response to the diverse range of attitudes towards creative teaching among the Islamic private schools.

Book excerpt: Since separatist insurgents renewed regular attacks in 2004 in Thailand's southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, students, teachers, and schools have been caught up in violence by both the insurgents and government security forces. The insurgents, who view the educational system as a symbol of Thai Buddhist state oppression, have burned and bombed government schools, harassed and killed teachers, and spread terror among students and their parents. The vast majority of teachers killed have been ethnic Thai Buddhists, and their deaths are often intended as a warning to others. Yet Muslim teachers have not been spared; insurgents have also targeted Muslim teachers at government schools, and Islamic school administrators who resist insurgents' efforts to use classrooms for indoctrination and recruiting. In some areas, insurgents have also pressured Malay Muslim families not to send children to government schools. The government faces the challenge of protecting children and teachers. Yet in some villages, government security forces have set up long-term military and paramilitary camps or bases in school buildings and on school grounds, interfering with education and student life and potentially attracting attacks as much as deterring them. When security forces have suspected that insurgents are using Islamic schools to hide or shelter, or that insurgents are seeking to indoctrinate school students into their separatist ideology and recruit new supporters and fighters, the government's response has included raids on schools, involving mass arbitrary arrests of students. Some raids have turned violent, endangering students and teachers. Such heavy-handed tactics may succeed in only further alienating the Muslim Malay community from the government. The result is that students, teachers, and schools are caught in the untenable position of facing a risk of violence from both insurgents and government security forces. Violations by both sides in the conflict disrupt access to a quality education for hundreds of thousands of children in the southern border provinces, Thai Buddhist and Malay Muslim alike.
