Book excerpt: This instrumental qualitative case study was conducted to gain an understanding of the perceptions of leadership during the implementation process of blended learning and the perceptions of blended learning as a viable instructional strategy. Six school districts in the state of Pennsylvania that use blended learning through the Hybrid Learning Institute participated in the study. Seventeen general education teachers from first grade through sixth grade and eleven administrators were surveyed. The data were disaggregated into three categories: Establishing a Clear Focus, Managing Change, and Creating a Purposeful Community. The categories were analyzed based on teacher and administrator perceptions of the characterized leadership qualities. Similar themes in the data indicated that both teachers and administrators in this study positively rated leadership support during the implementation process of blended learning. All three categories of leadership had a positive rating, with Creating a Purposeful Community ranked as the highest among teachers and Managing Change ranked highest among administrators. Overall, administrators consistently ranked their leadership qualities substantially higher than teacher perceptions of administrator leadership qualities. Similarly, administrators showed a greater amount of positive responses when compared to teacher responses about blended learning as an effective teaching strategy. The results of this study expand upon the limited body of research on the teacher and administrator perceptions of effective leadership during the implementation process of blended learning at the K-6 level.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine administrators' perceptions of their effectiveness as leaders in a blended learning environment and their preparedness to implement blended learning programs. Forty-two participants, who were either building-level or district-level administrators, in a school district that implemented blended learning, contributed to the study. Data were collected from 41 respondents through a web-based survey, open-ended questions, and one-on-one interview questions with 10 respondents. The results suggested that building a culture of risk-taking and trust, along with building effective systems was imperative to a successful implementation. Participating administrators touted having the background knowledge in change theory and/or organizational theory as imperative to becoming an effective change agent with blended learning implementations. In addition, professional development that was differentiated, modeled by administrators, and collaborative was also vital to the implementation. Respondents indicated that visiting other districts that had successfully implemented a blended learning program and allowing time to follow up with colleagues would ensure a positive experience with their own blended learning programs. Furthermore, administrators with experience as a former teacher or technology coach and/or exposure to online/blended teaching and learning directly reduced fear, increased the culture of learning, and facilitated an effective and successful blended learning implementation in their districts.

The data sources for this study included a researcher-designed survey, open-ended questions and personal interviews. Results of the study indicated general education teachers, special education teachers and administrators present similar views on their perceptions of essential leadership skills, knowledge and qualities to enhance co-teaching. Most participants agreed the specific skills essential for leadership are communication and flexibility. Participants found the knowledge necessary for leadership to enhance co-teaching include understanding how collaboration works, having a vast repertoire of team work concepts, holding common norms and sharing accountability for program implementation and enhancement. Teachers and administrators agreed the essential quality for leadership is respect, along with integrity and understanding in addition to collaboration and communication. Finally, allocating staff and securing funding were the most challenging obstacles for leadership and are becoming increasingly limited due to the current economic conditions.

Book excerpt: As blended learning expands educational environments, the effect of blended learning on the teacher's self-perception of effectiveness plays a significant role in the validity of the movement. The purpose of this case study explored how and why blended learning affected the self-perception of effectiveness of three middle school teachers. Using qualitative methodology, this case study conducted in the southwestern region of the United States through naturalistic inquiry, determined how blended learning affected the self-perception of teacher effectiveness. The data collection of the study included journaling, semi-structured interviews, and direct observations to examine their self-perceptions during a blended learning environment. The study identified possible limitations and advantages of blended learning in relation to effectiveness and compared their self-perception of effectiveness to their traditional teaching methods. The findings and conclusions of the study demonstrated a change in the participant's self-perception of effectiveness. Four distinct themes of environment, instruction, management, and relationships emerged from the study which may assist in identifying the skills and characteristics needed for educators to be effective leaders in blended learning. Future recommendations for research consist of conducting a similar study with under performing teachers, using criteria-based evaluation tools to support level of effectiveness, incorporate a large-scale study, implement various blended learning models within one environment to determine success of the model, and determine whether blended learning has the ability to close the achievement gap between students.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) provide an opportunity for leaders to improve school performance by improving student achievement (Hipp & Huffman, 2010). School culture can be changed to a culture of hope by using the principles of PLCs that are at the heart of successful education reform (DuFour & Fullan, 2013). The purpose of this study was to describe the teachers’ beliefs of five leadership practices as defined by the Leadership Practices Inventory [LPI] (Kouzes & Posner, 2013). Moreover, this study described the teachers’ beliefs of the implementation of the six dimensions of their PLC, defined by the Professional Learning Community Assessment-Revised [PLCA-R] (Oliver et al., 2014), in elementary and intermediate This is a quantitative study where the results of two survey instruments will be analyzed with a descriptive statistical analysis to describe the teachers’ beliefs of their principals’ leadership practices in addition to their beliefs of the six dimensions of their professional learning community. The goal was to determine the beliefs of leadership practices that could have the greatest positive impact on the implementation of the six dimensions of a PLC. The results of the LPI found evidence that all five leadership practices were perceived by teachers to be occurring in the schools studied. Two ix practices, Model the Way and Inspire a Shared Vision emerged most often. The results of the PLCA-R revealed that teachers in all the schools studied were focused on student learning, collaboration and results orientation. Additionally, teachers on these campuses understand and are committed to the vision of the school, to its goals for instruction, and its priorities (DuFour et al., 2008).

Current research exists on the efficacy of blended learning atthe elementary school level, leadership supports for blended learning, and relationships between student engagement and technology. Understanding teachers’ perceptions of what is helpfuland/or supportive can assist leaders in their efforts to effectively expand the incorporation of blended learning in the classroom.Quantitative data was collected through a survey of 230 elementary schools n the New York City Department of Education. A total of 178 teachers responded to the survey. Findings included a positive correlation between the number of blended lessons taught per week and teachers’ perceptions of leadership support for blended learning. Additional findings included positive correlations between student engagement and specific leadership actions to support blended learning. The study showed that when teachers perceived the leader supports blended learning, they used blended learning. Additionally, there was a relationship between leaders’ actions to support teachers’ use of blended learning and student engagement in the classroom.

Some teachers faced barriers when attempting to move into these leadership roles. In this qualitative study, the researcher surveyed the teaching faculty of three middle schools in a school district in the eastern United States. The researcher identified and interviewed thirteen teachers to identify their perceptions of the constructs of teacher leadership, as well as their perceptions of barriers to leadership. Using a general qualitative design, the following themes emerged: teacher leaders are not chosen based on skill, they are not supported, and they lack clearly defined roles, yet they continue to be instructional leaders in their schools. Participants also identified four types of barriers to leadership: principal, personal, district, and colleague barriers. The researcher concluded that successful implementation of teacher leadership is centered on transparency in the process and is based on the concept of distributed leadership.

It analyzed the influence of on-site leadership and teacher professional development on the implementation of blended learning and its influence on student engagement. Although blended learning integrates different teaching methods based on multiple theories, such as Cognitivism, Constructivism and Behaviorism, this study adopted a guiding theory based primarily on Cognitivism. A qualitative approach with a multiple-case study design was employed. The qualitative data was collected through a semi-structured interview protocol, and individual interviews took place via Zoom with the participants, which included elementary teachers and principals. The findings respective to the first research question revealed that principals and teachers perceived explicit teacher professional development on blended learning as the most effective teacher professional development influencing student engagement. With respect to the second research question collaborative leadership yielded effective leadership and, in turn, influenced the implementation of blended learning. The most significant implication of this study was that blended learning influenced student engagement. Teachers reported more participation, increased participation, and more student engagement with blended learning systems. Principals commented that students were engaged and that this involvement helped with resolving behavioral issues.

Five teachers volunteered to answer six researcher designed interview questions. A panel of experienced educators reviewed and approved all the survey and interview questions. Findings indicated that teachers acknowledged the importance of a school district's need to have a well-defined plan prior to initiating a blended model for learning. Response data revealed that without a well-established teacher to student connection. student motivation and engagement in the blended model is not likely to occur well. This study also supported that a comprehensive approach to professional development rooted in well communicated procedures and expectations is a key to giving the blended model the greatest opportunity to be successful in schools, These findings can guide future research for educators who want to implement blended learning practices in their schools to increase students' options to further customize their educational path.
