Book excerpt: Many research studies have investigated causes of obesity in the American adult and childhood populations. A majority of these studies have focused on factors outside of the school setting. This study examined teacher and administrator perceptions of their district's wellness policy and the effectiveness and/or influence of the said wellness policy on student body mass (BMI) scores. The study incorporated an on-line Likert scale survey, open-ended response survey, and student BMI scores collected both before and after implementation of the wellness policy. Survey results indicated a lack of teacher and administrator involvement in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of their school's wellness policy. The survey responses also suggested a lack of communication regarding the wellness policy at both the district and building level. This breakdown in communication and lack of involvement appeared to limit the effectiveness of the wellness policy in lowering overall student BMI.
