A majority of these studies have focused on factors outside of the school setting. This study examined teacher and administrator perceptions of their district's wellness policy and the effectiveness and/or influence of the said wellness policy on student body mass (BMI) scores. The study incorporated an on-line Likert scale survey, open-ended response survey, and student BMI scores collected both before and after implementation of the wellness policy. Survey results indicated a lack of teacher and administrator involvement in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of their school's wellness policy. The survey responses also suggested a lack of communication regarding the wellness policy at both the district and building level. This breakdown in communication and lack of involvement appeared to limit the effectiveness of the wellness policy in lowering overall student BMI.

Children in Mississippi have the highest rate of obesity among all other states. The outcome of this epidemic presents an increase in poor health. To address the problems associated with overweight and obesity among children, schools in the U.S. were required to develop school wellness policies. School principals were identified as key individuals in overseeing the development and implementation of the policies. Existing research studies show a strong relationship or association between student health and academic achievement. The purpose of this research study was to investigate elementary school principals' perceptions related to the implementation of school wellness policies. The study sought to examine principals' perceptions regarding physical activity, child nutrition, health education, and general beliefs about school health policy implementation. A web-based survey was sent to 670 elementary school principals with 123 (18%) responding. The majority of the respondents were White females who had served four or more years as principals, had average enrollments of 500 students at their schools, and had school ratings of successful or high performing. Positive weak correlations were found to exist between school accountability ratings and principals' beliefs that physical activity promotes improved test scores and that physical activity and healthful nutrition promote increased school attendance. Positive weak correlations were also found between school accountability ratings and principals' beliefs that physical activity, child nutrition, and health education promote improved classroom behavior.

Some school districts include weight status measurement in their wellness policies for surveillance and/or screening. Surveillance monitors the percentage of students who are overweight or obese. Screening provides parents with personalized information about their child's weight status. A strong wellness policy can create a school environment that promotes activity and nutrition. Districts offering weight status measurement should have strong wellness policies to support students in maintaining a healthy weight. The following discussion highlights the extent to which public school districts have included weight status measurement as part of a comprehensive wellness policy, based on a nationally representative sample of district wellness policies from the 2011-2012 school year from the Bridging the Gap (BTG) study. This brief also summarizes the strength scores of wellness policy components by whether the policy requires a weight status provision. All policies were collected and coded by BTG researchers using a standardized method based on evidence-based guidelines and recommendations from expert organizations and agencies. School districts were identified as having a weight status measurement provision if their wellness policy required schools to measure student body mass index (BMI), body composition, or fitness through FITNESSGRAMʼ . The wellness policy strength score for the overall policy and of individual policy components was defined by the policy coding process described in the methods document. Book excerpt: The rate of obesity has steadily increased among adults in Alaska, according to the Alaska Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 1991 to 2007. Similar trends have been seen among adolescents and children. The increase in overweight/obese status, especially among the youth population, has stimulated development of policies and programs aimed at impacting the problem of childhood obesity in Alaska. The Anchorage School District (ASD) implemented its School Wellness Policy in 2006. Data analysis from purposive sample of 7222 student records in the ASD's database from 1999 through 2010, utilizing a retrospective cohort study design, indicated there was no significant association between exposure to the School Wellness Policy and changes in Body Mass Index status. Factors such as socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and gender seem to be significantly associated with changes in BMI status, supporting the need for development of additional effective deterrents to childhood obesity, to supplement the current ASD policies.

Subjects responded to a survey assessing their perspectives regarding the implementation of the local school wellness policy pursuant to the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 an Obama-era policy, the results were then examined using ANOVA and theoretical foundations of Policy Implementation Framework (PIF), Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF), and Multiple Streams Model (MSM). In this study, the author identifies the perceptions of stakeholders to bring about a more effective understanding of the consequences of an unfunded mandate that fuels local school wellness policy in Kent County. This study fills a gap in nutrition policy literature at the local/district level and demonstrates that there is a perception that school employees/staff responsibilities were negatively impacted by the HHFKA and that local school wellness policy lacked proper implementation due mostly to lack of training for stakeholders.

The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
