Book excerpt: Using a best evidence synthesis model, this book reviews research conducted in primary/elementary and secondary schools in the United States and in Great Britain on setting and streaming (ways of grouping pupils according to ability). The review concludes that research provides no evidence that student achievement at the primary/elementary school level is raised either by streaming (grouping by general ability) or setting (grouping by subject ability) within the school. Within-class ability grouping at the elementary school level has been found to have advantages for mathematics achievement. At the secondary level, there is no consistent and reliable evidence of positive effects of setting and streaming in any subjects, or for students of particular ability levels. Evidence suggests that teachers sometimes treat mixed-ability groups as though they were low-ability groups and that even experienced teachers frequently use inappropriate whole-class teaching methods with mixed-ability classes. What is important in determining achievement is that the challenge and support given to learners meet their needs. (Contains 168 references.) (KB)

Book excerpt: Total School Cluster Grouping is a specific form of cluster grouping that has a research base, theoretical rationale, and model for successful implementation in schools. Total School Cluster Grouping and Differentiation details how the Total School Cluster Grouping Model provides full-time services to high-achieving, high-ability elementary students, helps all students improve their academic achievement and educational self-efficacy, enables teachers more effectively and efficiently meet the diverse needs of their students, and weaves gifted education and talent development "know-how" into the fabric of all educational practices in the school. The book also includes practical methods for quickly and easily differentiating lessons and injecting challenge, interest, and student ideas into classwork and projects. This thorough resource provides educators with the tools and guidelines necessary to implement this model in their school. An accompanying CD offers reproducible PDFs.

What criteria should be used for dividing students up between schools and classes? When is tracking/streaming and ability grouping appropriate in a school system? the author reviews the research of the past decade in order to evaluate the impact of class composition on students' learning. The question of equality of opportunity is also addressed. Although it is one of the fundamental principles of every educational project in the democratic countries, what are the real learning opportunities offered to students? Among the factors that make these opportunities differ between schools, or even between classes, researchers have long studied the question of the influence that each pupil or student has on his or her classmates - the so-called ’peer effect'. Going beyond peer effect within classes, this book also considers the subtle and sometimes unintentional process of adapting the teaching level according To The level of the school, which can lead to inequalities. Beyond a review of the research carried out on these issues, The author tackles related issues of administration and education policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine principals’ and teachers’ perceptions of flexible ability grouping when used for students with exceptional mathematical promise in third and fourth-grade mathematics classes. Flexible grouping allows educators to match students’ readiness levels with instruction and to apply proper content and pacing. This study extended previous research on grouping practices and investigated flexible grouping in relation to mathematics instruction, both within-class ability grouping and between- or cross-class ability grouping. The type of research design was an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach, combining quantitative survey and qualitative interview data. The survey used a Likert-type rating scale and contained 23 questions. Participants reflected a purposeful sampling method, and included 86 elementary educators, consisting of 77 teachers and nine principals from five suburban school districts in Pennsylvania. After survey completion, a small group of 10 participants engaged in one-on-one interviews. Interviewees included two principals and eight teachers. Principals and teachers provided information about perceived effects of flexible grouping for students with exceptional mathematical promise, advantages and disadvantages of this practice, and planning and implementation aspects needed for successful delivery. Principals’ and teachers’ perceptions revealed significant results, including the beneficial effects of flexible grouping on academic performance and social and emotional behaviors for students with exceptional mathematical promise. Survey and interview data indicated that the advantages of flexible grouping as an instructional practice for students with exceptional mathematical promise outweighed the disadvantages. Some of the main advantages that surfaced in this study included high levels of student engagement, opportunities for higher level thinking, faster pacing of curriculum, and student preferences for working with peers of similar readiness and ability levels. Finally, this study explored aspects of planning and implementation necessary for flexible grouping at the elementary level. Results of qualitative data collection also revealed a need for meaningful professional development and training as well as sufficient teacher planning time through professional learning communities or grade-level meetings. Flexible grouping in mathematics should be considered a valuable and effective tool in meeting the needs of students, especially students with exceptional mathematical promise.

Book excerpt: The book, first published in 1983, explores the argument that justifies mixed ability groupings in schools and the consequences of practicing the different justificatory arguments. The issues to be dealt with by staff making decisions about grouping arrangements in their schools are clearly worked out from basic principles rooted in social philosophy. The ideas of social justice and fraternity, implicit and unexamined in much discussions about mixed-ability grouping are here explained and their limitations and implications described. The issues discussed in this book are not only important for teachers and for those studying to become teachers, but also for school governors, administrators and parents who can gain a better understanding of the school system through this study.
