Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tea Industry Tea is so familiar a thing to us that we seldom stop to think of its origin unless we happen to be fortunate enough to Visit Darjeeling, Assam, or some other district in India where it is grown and manufactured. We know that the brown liquid which we drink is made from small black leaves but apart from that we are perhaps like the boy who, when asked where tea came from, replied, The shop.' But where does the shopman get his tea To that question we shall get the answer as we read this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tea Planter's Life in Assam: With Seventy-Five Illustrations by the Author There are, doubtless, many intending emigrants who desire to learn something of the country in which they purpose spending some years of their lives, and what may be the probability of acquiring sufficient wealth to enable them to return home with a com petence for the remainder of their days. When in such a position myself, my inquiries, addressed to travellers who seemed to know most corners of the world, obtained but meagre replies: Assam - yes beastly unhealthy hole; better not go there. Beyond this point their knowledge did not appear to extend. Other sources of information were consulted, but in vain was anything definite looked for. At length an old friend resident in Assam sent me the long-desired information, and this, together with my own subse quent experience, I now hand over to my readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tea Industry in India: A Review of Finance and Labour, and a Guide for Capitalists and Assistants The mison detre of any book ought to be that there is room for it, and also that it is needed. It is in such a belief that I have again ventured to seek the patronage of those interested in the Indian tea industry; and I may say that the belief rested, in the first place, on the representation of a firm of London tea-brokers, that such a book as I have now written would be of use at the present time. Thinking over the remarks made in this regard, I found that a wide field was open to me one that, so far as I was aware, had not been opened up, and which, from the Indian side, it seemed to me, could not very well be opened. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who is planning on carrying out research in South Asia or indeed anyone who simply wishes to understand more about this cultural heartland should read this book. It shows how geological movements moulded the land of this unique cradle and how they still impact on it. Discussions are woven around the three major forces of integration. These are 'identitive' forces - bonds of language, ethnicity, religion or ideology; 'utilitarian' forces – bonds of common material interest, and 'coercion' – the institutional use or threat of physical violence. By studying these forces, Professor Chapman shows how the organization of territory has been central to the region's historic, cultural, linguistic and economic development. In addition to the material on the Northwest frontier, Afghanistan and Kashmir which was added for the second edition, the Northeastern borderlands are also now examined in this fully revised third edition. The current geopolitical state of the region is completely updated and greatly enhanced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Indian economy integrates into global circuits of production, exchange and accumulation, the burdens of adjustment are shared unequally by different sectors, classes and regions. This study unravels the livelihood strategies and living conditions of labour in the tea gardens of Assam. The tea sector has been undergoing a crisis since the 1990s, with stagnant production, decline in exports, and closures of many tea gardens leading to large-scale retrenchments in the labour force. Based on a detailed analysis of secondary data and primary field research, the study examines the extent, types and implications of inter-generational occupational mobility (or immobility) among tea garden labourers in Assam. In the process, it reflects on how even a sector that had brought capital and labour from outside and contributed significantly to the country’s export earnings failed to create dynamic growth linkages within the local economy. The experience of the labour force in the Assam tea sector, the authors argue, is important for making sense not only of the development dynamics of the region, but of the contradictory ways in which forces of globalisation and neo-liberal reforms have been reshaping the worlds of labourers in the margins. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of labour studies, development studies, management studies, and studies of north-east India, as well as to policy-makers and those in the tea industry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tea Soils of Assam and Tea Manuring Before proceeding to consider the chemical needs of the Assam Tea soils, the equally important matter of their physical con dition - their stifi'ness, the fineness of their particles, their relation to water, to heat, &c.-must be dealt with. This is a matter which has in the past largely been neglected. Even to this day there are practical and experienced men holding diametrically opposite views as to the character of the soil best suited to tea, and the means of keeping that soil in the best condition. It should however be at once recognised that a soil may be rich in all the elements of plant food, and yet be quite infertile. If 'roots are to develop in a healthy and vigorous manner, there must be a suitable soil climate. The conditions as to air, moisture, and temperature within the soil are quite as essential for Vigorous plant growth as are the corresponding conditions in the atmosphere above. It It is, in fact, becoming more and more abund antly clear that one cannot judge entirely the value of a soil from a chemical analysis - its physical properties will possibly do more to determine, in the first instance at any rate, its fertility than its chemical composition.
