Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] The southern-temperate spider family Micropholcommatidae is a poorly-studied taxon of uncertain limits and uncertain affinities. Since the first Australian species were described in the early twentieth century, and the family was erected in 1944, the taxonomic status and phylogenetic placement of the Micropholcommatidae have been the subject of ongoing debate. Various phylogenetic hypotheses have been proposed for the family, but these hypotheses have never been tested with a robust phylogenetic analysis a problem compounded by the inadequate state and confusing history of micropholcommatid taxonomy. To address the many gaps in our understanding of micropholcommatid interrelationships, this thesis will present a comprehensive systematic treatment of the family. Using a combination of molecular phylogenetic, morphological cladistic and taxonomic methods, micropholcommatid diversity is documented and tested at multiple systematic levels, with an alpha-taxonomic and biogeographic focus on the diverse Australian fauna. The taxonomic contribution is substantial throughout, with one new family, two new subfamilies, one new tribe, 14 new genera and 37 new species described. A combined molecular phylogenetic study is presented in Chapter 2, as a 'first pass' exploration of the monophyly, limits and phylogenetic position of the family Micropholcommatidae. The analyses incorporated 50 ingroup spider species, including 23 micropholcommatid taxa, with nucleotide sequences obtained from two nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (18S and 28S). ...The new subfamily Gigiellinae is also described for two enigmatic species in the newly-described genus Gigiella, known only from the temperate Nothofagus rainforests of south-eastern Australia and southern Chile. As a final contribution to micropholcommatid taxonomy, and as an extension to the cladistic analyses presented in Chapter 5, the new spider family Teutoniellidae is proposed in Chapter 6 for three genera from South America, South Africa and Australia. Teutoniellid monophyly is evidenced by at least two unambiguous synapomorphies, and the morphology of the family is described in relation to other symphytognathidan and EbCY spider taxa. The nominate genus Teutoniella is redescribed to include three species from South America, along with an additional new species from Tasmania. Two new teutoniellid genera are also described, each for a single new species from South Africa: Inflaticrus ansieae is described from the Langeberg Range, east of Cape Town; and Woldius hennigi is described from near Pietermaritzburg, north-west of Durban. In summary, this thesis provides a taxonomic and phylogenetic framework for all future research on micropholcommatid spiders. It presents new data on the phylogeny, phylogenetic position, composition, biogeography, molecular evolution and natural history of a previously poorly-known group of spiders, and highlights a number of remaining gaps in our knowledge of micropholcommatid and araneoid systematics. As a novel contribution to scholarship, this thesis synthesises taxonomic and phylogenetic hypotheses at multiple systematic levels, and tests those hypotheses with original, combined datasets.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the Australian spider fauna and includes many species that are well known to Australian biologists, naturalists, gardeners and pest controllers. Spiders of Australia provides for the first time information on a vast spectrum of the Australian spider fauna and illustrates and describes over 150 species in some detail. Many other species are mentioned and discussed and a thorough summary of spider morphology, biology and classification is also provided. All representative families are described in some detail and the numbers of each family are listed on Australian and World levels. Most of the major genera of each family are described and representative species illustrated and described. Most of the spiders illustrated are photographed alive in their natural settings while approx. 30 species are represented by paintings of living specimens. The illustrations and descriptions make it easy for the layperson to identify many common spiders and provides also for the first time, an up to date reference list of hundreds of old and more recent scientific papers, books and other articles on Australian and related spider species. This list is organized into families and will prove to be an indispensable tool for serious workers on Arachnida. Much of the information provided for many of the species is new, based on the authors own field observations. The book is aimed for the scientist, naturalist, student and layperson both in Australia and overseas.

Book excerpt: "This study provides a framework for future research on the taxonomy of Neosparassus by testing and confirming its monophyly with molecular data, revisiting and resolving the taxonomic status of several problematic historical species, and by describing the first new species of the genus since 1903. It also provides direction for future systematic research on Neosparassus and other groups of Australian Sparassidae, particularly to test the generic boundaries of Isopeda, Isopedella, and Holconia, and to reconsider the placement of Irileka and Keilira in the Heteropodinae."--from introduction.

Yet Peacock Spiders, with their colourful fan-spreading courtship dances, have won rapturous appreciation worldwide. A Field Guide to Spiders of Australia uses photographs of living animals to help people identify many of the spiders they encounter. Featuring over 1300 colour photographs, it is the most comprehensive account of Australian spiders ever published. With more than two-thirds of Australian spiders yet to be scientifically described, this book sets the scene for future explorations of our extraordinary Australian fauna. This field guide will be enjoyed by naturalists and anyone with an interest in learning more about Australia's incredible arachnids.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 'hypochiloids, ' the most primitive known araneomorph spiders, are reclassified on the basis of a cladistic analysis of the results of a comparative morphological survey. Platnick's previous hypothesis--that the family Hypochilidae, containing two genera (Hypochilus, from the United States, and Ectatosticta, from China), represents the sister group of all other araneomorphs--is corroborated, and four new species of Hypochilus (H. pococki, H. coylei, H. sheari, and H. kastoni) are described. However, Platnick's and all other previous arrangements of the remaining 'hypochiloid' genera are rejected in favor of a hypothesis that these austral taxa form a monophyletic group, the superfamily Austrochiloidea, containing two families, the Austrochilidae and Gradungulidae. The family Hickmaniidae Lehtinen, containing only the Tasmanian species Hickmania troglodytes (Higgins and Petterd), is relegated to subfamilial status within the Austrochilidae. In its sister group, the Austrochilinae, Lehtinen's synonymy of Austrochilus manni Gertsch and Zapfe with Thaida peculiaris Karsch is rejected on both the specific and generic levels; four new species of Austrochilus (A. melon, A. schlingeri, A. franckei, and A. newtoni) and one new species of Thaida (T. chepu) are described from Chile and adjacent Argentina. Five new genera of Gradungulidae are described: Spelunga, containing S. cavernicola, new species, from New Zealand; Tarlina, containing five new species (T. noorundi, type species, T. milledgei, T. smithersi, T. daviesae, and T. simipes) and T. woodwardi (Forster), transferred from Gradungula, all from eastern Australia; Kaiya, containing three new species (K. terama, type species, K. bemboka, and K. parnabyi) and K. brindabella (Moran), transferred from Gradungula, all from eastern Australia; Pianoa, containing P. isolata, new species, from New Zealand; and Macrogradungula, containing M. moonya, new species, from Queensland, Australia"--Page 3

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview on the systematics of the stone huntsman spider genus Eusparassus Simon, 1903 and an identification key to the known species are presented. Six species-groups are proposed: the walckenaeri group (3 species, Eastern Mediterranean to Arabia and parts of North-Eastern Africa), dufouri group (8 species, Iberian Peninsula to parts of North-western Africa), vestigator group (3 species, Central to Eastern Africa and an isolated area in India), jaegeri group (4 species, Southern and South-Eastern Africa), tuckeri group (2 species, South-Western Africa) and doriae group (7 species, Middle East to Central and South Asia). Two species, E. pontii Caporiacco, 1935 and E. xerxes (Pocock, 1901) could not be placed in any of the above groups. The species from Africa and Arabia are revised. The following ten species are re-described: Eusparassus barbarus (Lucas, 1846), E. atlanticus Simon, 1909 stat. nov., E. syrticus Simon, 1909, E. oraniensis (Lucas, 1846), E. letourneuxi (Simon, 1874), E. fritschi (Koch, 1873) stat. rev., E. walckenaeri (Audouin, 1826), E. vestigator (Simon, 1897) comb. nov., E. laevatus (Simon, 1897) comb. nov. and E. tuckeri (Lawrence, 1927) comb. nov. The latter three species are transferred from Olios Walckenaer, 1837. Seven new species are described: Eusparassus arabicus spec. nov. (male, female) from Arabian Peninsula, E. educatus spec. nov. (male, female) from Namibia, E. reverentia spec. nov. (male, female) from Burkina Faso and Nigeria, E. jaegeri spec. nov. (male, female) from South Africa and Botswana, E. jocquei spec. nov. (male, female) from Zimbabwe, E. borakalalo spec. nov. (female) from South Africa and E. schoemanae spec. nov. (male, female) from South Africa and Namibia. Three taxa, E. dufouri maximus Strand, 1906 syn. nov., E. rufobrunneus Caporiacco, 1941 syn. nov. and Olios furcatus Lawrence, 1927 syn. nov. are proposed as junior synonyms of E. oraniensis, E. vestigator comb. nov. and E. tuckeri comb. nov. respectively. Males of E. atlanticus stat. nov. and E. fritschi stat. rev. are described for the first time as in the female of E. vestigator comb. nov. Neotypes are designated for E. barbarus, E. oraniensis and E. letourneuxi (all from Algeria). The male and female of Cercetius perezi Simon, 1902, which was known only from the immature holotype, are described here for the first time. This resulted in recognizing the monotypic and little used generic name Cercetius Simon, 1902 as a synonym of the widely used name Eusparassus. Nearly all the species are illustrated for the first time. Eusparassus concolor Caporiacco, 1939 is transferred to Olios and the replacement name Olios quesitio is proposed because of secondary homonymy. For the majority of the species, new geographical records are presented. The systematics and zoogeography of the currently known species and species groups are discussed. A brief note on the copulation process of E. walckenaeri is presented.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the field of Toxinology has expanded substantially. On the one hand it studies venomous animals, plants and micro organisms in detail to understand their mode of action on targets. While on the other, it explores the biochemical composition, genomics and proteomics of toxins and venoms to understand their three interaction with life forms (especially humans), development of antidotes and exploring their pharmacological potential. Therefore, Toxinology has deep linkages with biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy and pharmacology. In addition, there is a fast developing applied subfield, clinical toxinology, which deals with understanding and managing medical effects of toxins on human body. Given the huge impact of toxin-based deaths globally, and the potential of venom in generation of drugs for so-far incurable diseases (for example, Diabetes, Chronic Pain), the continued research and growth of the field is imminent. This has led to the growth of research in the area and the consequent scholarly output by way of publications in journals and books. Despite this ever growing body of literature within biomedical sciences, there is still no all-inclusive reference work available that collects all of the important biochemical, biomedical and clinical insights relating to Toxinology. The Handbook of Toxinology aims to address this gap and cover the field of Toxinology comprehensively.

Book excerpt: One of the only books to treat the whole spider, from its behavior and physiology to its neurobiology and reproductive characteristics, Biology of Spiders is considered a classic in spider literature. First published in German in 1979, the book is now in its third edition, and has established itself as the supreme authority on these fascinating creatures. Containing five hundred new references, this book incorporates the latest research while dispelling many oft-heard myths and misconceptions that surround spiders. Of special interest are chapters on the structure and function of spider webs and silk, as well as those on spider venom. A new subchapter on tarantulas will appeal especially to tarantula keepers and breeders. The highly accessible text is supplemented by exceptional, high-quality photographs, many of them originals, and detailed diagrams. It will be of interest to arachnologists, entomologists, and zoologists, as well as to academics, students of biology, and the general reader curious about spiders.
