Book Synopsis Understanding and Controlling the German Cockroach by : Michael K. Rust
Download or read book Understanding and Controlling the German Cockroach written by Michael K. Rust and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-05 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German cockroach is considered to be the most resilient and ecologically important insect pest found in homes, apartments, and commercial facilities in the United States and across the world. This book expertly provides up-to-the-minute information about the behavior and biology of this pest--including taxonomy, distribution, morphology, and genetics--as it may relate to effective technologies for its control. Building on information presented piecemeal in books and articles appearing over more than 50 years, the book features over 1,200 references related to the German cockroach, most published within the last year. With contributions from the top experts, the book will be invaluable to students and practitioners of entomology and pest management.
Book Synopsis Cockroaches from Jurassic sediments of the Bakhar Formation in Mongolia by : Peter Vršanský
Download or read book Cockroaches from Jurassic sediments of the Bakhar Formation in Mongolia written by Peter Vršanský and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides essential information on 12 cockroach assemblages with more than a thousand specimens analyzed and investigates the Jurassic site in Bakhar, Mongolia, as one of the most diverse fossil insect sites worldwide. The findings presented here include 32 new cockroach species (of a total of 300 Jurassic species described worldwide). Since several individuals of each species are investigated, the book is the first that contains information on the variability of an Upper Jurassic organism. The wings of the cockroach specimen only rarely show wing deformations, suggesting that the ecological conditions at Bakhar were optimal during that time. The book’s content is clearly structured, moving from collection methods, to phylogenetic analyses, to a comparison of global fossil sites. Given its scope, the book appeals to all (Jurassic) paleontologists, botanists and paleoentomologists, as it offers an unbiased counterpart to the extensively studied Daohugou site in China. It is also useful in the mining industry, as the strata contain strategic coal (and other materials).

Download or read book Arthropod Venoms written by S. Bettini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthropod venoms have received much attention and have played an important role in folklore and medicine since ancient times. Scorpion envenomation, "tarant ism," bee and wasp stings are among those subjects about which most has been speculated and written in the past. In the last 50 years or so, a great number of scientific papers have been devoted to arthropod venoms, but only a few volumes have been designed to collect this rapidly increasing material, and these are not recent. Of late, the chemistry and mode of action of several arthropod venoms have been thoroughly studied, and some of these substances will probably be used as pharmacological tools and also as therapeutic agents. The aim of the present volume is to collect in manual form new information as well as the old notions on arthropod venoms. Even though it was our intention to present a volume on arthropod venoms, and not on venomous arthropods, inevitably we were forced to include information on venom-producing organisms as well. We assumed, in fact, that those scientists for whom the present manual is primarily intended (biochemists, particularly com parative biochemists, and pharmacologists) should be familiar with the biologic elements concerning the venom-producing species; which should show them how important it is to operate in close collaboration with biologists specialized in venomous arthropod systematics and biology.

Book Synopsis Cockroaches as Models for Neurobiology by : Ivan Huber
Download or read book Cockroaches as Models for Neurobiology written by Ivan Huber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-02-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cockroaches offer a useful and inexpensive alternative to traditional laboratory animals, yet most researchers are unfamiliar with their biology. This unique and comprehensive cockroach handbook is written for everyone from novice to expert. It addresses every aspect of cockroach biology, with a particular emphasis on the neuroendocrine system. Liberally illustrated chapters include such topics as cockroach culture, anatomy, behavior, and various experimental techniques. One of the few available books to provide broad coverage of the neurobiology of a single organism, this second volume is a must for all researchers in biomedical or veterinary fields, as well as for entomologists.

Priest of Messrs Chapman & Hall, who saved us from many errors and omissions, and to Mrs R. G. Davies for substantial help in preparing the bibliographies and checking references. London O. W. R. R. G. D. May 1976 Part III THEORDERSOFINSECTS THE CLASSIFICATION AND PHYLOGENY OF INSECTS The classification of insects has passed through many changes and with the growth of detailed knowledge an increasing number of orders has come to be recognized. Handlirsch (1908) and Wilson and Doner (1937) have reviewed the earlier attempts at classification, among which the schemes of Brauer (1885), Sharp (1899) and Borner (1904) did much to define the more distinctive recent orders. In 1908 Handlirsch published a more revolutionary system, incorporating recent and fossil forms, which gave the Collembola, Thysanura and Diplura the status of three independent Arthropodan classes and considered as separate orders such groups as the Sialoidea, Raphidioidea, Heteroptera and Homoptera. He also split up the old order Orthoptera, gave its components ordinal rank and regrouped them with some of the other orders into a subclass Orthopteroidea and another subclass Blattaeformia.

Download or read book Cockroaches written by William J. Bell and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-07-27 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential volume on the biology and behavior of these remarkable insects. “This transformative work will be an inspiration to students of entomology.” —Choice The cockroach is truly an evolutionary wonder. This definitive volume provides a complete overview of suborder Blattaria, highlighting the diversity of these amazing insects in their natural environments. Beginning with a foreword by Edward O. Wilson, the book explores the fascinating natural history and behavior of cockroaches, describing their various colors, sizes, and shapes, as well as how they move on land, in water, and through the air. In addition to habitat use, diet, reproduction, and behavior, Cockroaches covers aspects of cockroach biology, such as the relationship between cockroaches and microbes, termites as social cockroaches, and the ecological impact of the suborder. With over 100 illustrations, an expanded glossary, and an invaluable set of references, this work is destined to become the classic book on the Blattaria. Students and research entomologists can mine each chapter for new ideas, new perspectives, and new directions for future study. “Well-written . . . visually attractive . . . This book is much needed to educate biologists about the fascinating biology and diversity of cockroaches.” —Integrative and Comparative Biology “A must-have for any insect hobbyest.” —Allpet Roaches Forum “This contribution is an important source of information on cockroach natural history and diversity.” —The Quarterly Review of Biology “Suitable for researchers, students, and naturalists, chapters are topical, exploring the diversity of cockroaches.” —Southeastern Naturalist
