Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The land tax duplicates -- which ostensibly provide a complete yearly inventory of all landowners and tenants in every county in the United Kingdom, parish by parish -- are considered the most important systematic documentation available on British landed society between the Domesday Book of 1086 and the New Domesday of 1873. Throughout the past century the duplicates have been central to many questions at the heart of the most heated academic and political concerns, but their reliability as historical documentation has not previously been questioned systematically. In A Measure of Wealth, Donald Ginter launches a sweeping attack -- with devastating conclusions -- on the previous uses of the land tax duplicates as the evidential base of many of the leading questions in modern British historiography: the decline of the small landowner, the impact of enclosure, and the study of wealth inequalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume an international team of scholars builds up a comprehensive analysis of the fiscal history of Europe over six centuries. It forms a fundamental starting-point for an understanding of the distinctiveness of the emerging European states, and highlights the issue of fiscal power as an essential prerequisite for the development of the modern state. The study underlines the importance of technical developments by the state, its capacity to innovate, and, however imperfect the techniques, the greater detail and sophistication of accounting practice towards the end of the period. New taxes had been developed, new wealth had been tapped, new mechanisms of enforcement had been established. In general, these developments were made in western Europe; the lack of progress in some fiscal systems, especially those in eastern Europe, is an issue of historical importance in its own right and lends particular significance to the chapters on Poland and Russia. By the eighteenth century `mountains of debt' and high debt-revenue ratios had become the norm in western Europe, yet in the east only Russia was able to adapt to the western model by 1815. The capacity of governments to borrow, and the interaction of the constraints on borrowing and the power to tax had become the real test of the fiscal powers of the `modern state' by 1800-15.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Family Tree Detective, this guide provides the amateur genealogist or family historian with the skills to research the distribution and history of a surname. Colin Rogers uses a sample of 100 names, many of them common, to follow the migration of people through the centuries. Each of the 100 names is mapped since the Doomsday book in 1086. For those whose name is not among the sample, the book shows how to find out where namesakes live now, how they moved around the country through time, and how the name originated from a placename, a nickname or an occupation. Colin Rogers finishes this work by showing how the distribution of surnames can be studied irrespective of the size of the surrounding population, and reaches some interesting conclusions about which names are more reliable guides to migration since the 14th century.
