The Handbook has provided scholars interested in Latin America with a bibliographical source of a quality unavailable to scholars in most other branches of area studies." —Latin American Research Review Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. This rare perspective, derived from interviews and ethnographic methodologies, focuses on the actual details of music-making practice, rationalized in the context of the economic and creative forces that locally drive music production. By focusing on the work of audio engineers and musicians, recording studios and recording models, Ray Hitchins highlights a music creation methodology that has been acknowledged as being different to that of Europe and North America. The book leads to a broadening of our understanding of how Jamaican Popular Music emerged, developed and functions, thus providing an engaging example of the important relationship between music, technology and culture that will appeal to a wide range of scholars.
Book Synopsis Finding Common Ground by : Ian Boxill
Download or read book Finding Common Ground written by Ian Boxill and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Finding Common Ground: Selected Newspaper Columns of Ian Boxill, 1993-2000, literally represents the best articles written by Ian Boxill over a period of seven years (March 1993 to August 2000) on the opinion page of the Daily Gleaner in Jamaica. The book seeks – more so than the individual articles themselves, which were written with the general public in mind – to help graduates across the Caribbean region fulfil that obligation ... to become habitual readers (and writers). The hope is that they will not only read on matters relating to their own training and work, but also on issues of interest and concern to society in general and to the world today. In particular, the book also targets pre-university and first-year university students – especially those enrolled in degrees that involve basic or advanced expository or argumentative writing. In addition, it lends itself to 6th form students, those in community colleges, teacher- training colleges and other tertiary level institutions, who are learning to formulate and express a personal but informed opinion, in speech or writing, on topical events. - From the Editor’s Preface

Book Synopsis Challenging Inequities in Health by : Timothy Evans
Download or read book Challenging Inequities in Health written by Timothy Evans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing sense that the "health gap" between socioeconomic groups is getting worse in many countries. To address this gap, conceptual clarity and empirical evidence are needed along with a greater focus on equity in policy-making. This book is designed to present cutting-edge research and policy analysis to a wide non-specialist readership of students, professionals and policy-makers. It brings together in one volume new perspectives on the conceptual foundations of health equity, empirical evidence on the scale and nature of he inequities in health in twelve countries around the world, and assessments of the associated policy developments and their implications for the future. It aims to help build global capacity to measure, monitor and interpret developments in health equity at a national and international level. The in-depth country analyses draw on epidemiology, demography, economics and other fields to approach health inequalities from several different angles. The topics covered range from adolescent livelihoods in Tanzania to the health burden of indigenous peoples in Mexico, from health equity in Japan to the gender gap in life expectancy in Russia. The book is a unique demonstration of global cooperation in bringing together and giving equal weight to work on health equity carried out in the southern and northern hemispheres.

Book Synopsis Taxation of Hybrid Financial Instruments and the Remuneration Derived Therefrom in an International and Cross-border Context by : Sven-Eric Bärsch
Download or read book Taxation of Hybrid Financial Instruments and the Remuneration Derived Therefrom in an International and Cross-border Context written by Sven-Eric Bärsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the enormous diversity and complexity of financial instruments, the current taxation of hybrid financial instruments and the remuneration derived therefrom are characterized by a neat division into dividend-generating equity and interest-generating debt as well as by a coexistence of source- and residence-based taxation. This book provides a comparative analysis of the classification of hybrid financial instruments in the national tax rules currently applied by Australia, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands as well as in the relevant tax treaties and EU Directives. Moreover, based on selected hybrid financial instruments, mismatches in these tax classifications, which lead to tax planning opportunities and risks and thus are in conflict with the single tax principle, are identified. To address these issues, the author provides reform options that are in line with the dichotomous debt-equity framework, as he/she suggests the coordination of either tax classifications or tax treatments.
