Book Synopsis Baltica & Balto-Slavica by : Frederik Kortlandt
Download or read book Baltica & Balto-Slavica written by Frederik Kortlandt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a discussion of the phonological, accentological and morphological development of the Baltic languages and their Indo-European origins. The first half of this book is about Baltic historical phonology and morphology and the second half is about Prussian. The emphasis is on the relative chronology of sound changes and on the development of the flexional and derivational categories of nouns, pronouns and verbs. It is argued that the Balto-Slavic acute tone was a glottal stop which developed from the Indo-European laryngeals and from Winter’s law and that the original circumflex continues other vocalic sequences. Special points of attention are the gen.pl. endings, ē and ī/jā stems, and thematic and athematic present endings. The second half of the book contains a comparative analysis of the three Prussian catechisms, resulting in the conclusion that they represent three consecutive stages of a real linguistic system. It includes a discussion of the Prussian accent shift, initial vowels, diphthongs, infinitives, verb classes, participles and traces of ablauting paradigms. The final part of the book offers a full linguistic interpretation of the three Prussian catechisms on the basis of the preceding chapters, followed by a list of references and a word index. The book is of interest to Balticists, Slavicists, Indo-Europeanists, and other historical linguists.

Book Synopsis Language Contact and Minority Languages on the Littorals of Europe by : P. Sture Ureland
Download or read book Language Contact and Minority Languages on the Littorals of Europe written by P. Sture Ureland and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2007 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth Eurolinguistics volume, which contains the papers given at the 5th International Symposium at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, 2004. It is a continuation of a series on Eurolinguistic publications initiated by the Logos Verlag in 2003. The main aim of the symposium was to explore the effects of language contact and multilingualism in different maritime areas of western and northern Europe: Scandinavia, the Baltic States, the British Isles, The Low Countries, France, Italy, and the Pyrenean Peninsula. The contributions are centered on a wide-range of geohistorical maritime contacts with different spectra of multilingual and minority situations along the coasts and rivers of Maritime Europe. For an adequate and non-traditional subdivision of Europe which is neither national nor political, the articles published here deal with contacts under broader geographical terms such as Eurolinguistics West, Eurolinguistics South and Eurolinguistics North. It contains major water-bound regions belonging to the water-drainage areas of seas, lakes and rivers in the sense of Maritime Eurolinguistics.

Download or read book The Sky People written by S.M. Stirling and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marc Vitrac was born in Louisiana in the early 1960's, about the time the first interplanetary probes delivered the news that Mars and Venus were teeming with life—even human life. At that point, the "Space Race" became the central preoccupation of the great powers of the world. Now, in 1988, Marc has been assigned to Jamestown, the US-Commonwealth base on Venus, near the great Venusian city of Kartahown. Set in a countryside swarming with sabertooths and dinosaurs, Jamestown is home to a small band of American and allied scientist-adventurers. But there are flies in this ointment – and not only the Venusian dragonflies, with their yard-wide wings. The biologists studying Venus's life are puzzled by the way it not only resembles that on Earth, but is virtually identical to it. The EastBloc has its own base at Cosmograd, in the highlands to the south, and relations are frosty. And attractive young geologist Cynthia Whitlock seems impervious to Marc's Cajun charm. Meanwhile, at the western end of the continent, Teesa of the Cloud Mountain People leads her tribe in a conflict with the Neanderthal-like beastmen who have seized her folk's sacred caves. Then an EastBloc shuttle crashes nearby, and the beastmen acquire new knowledge... and AK47's. Jamestown sends its long-range blimp to rescue the downed EastBloc cosmonauts, little suspecting that the answer to the jungle planet's mysteries may lie there, among tribal conflicts and traces of a power that made Earth's vaunted science seem as primitive as the tribesfolk's blowguns. As if that weren't enough, there's an enemy agent on board the airship... Extravagant and effervescent, The Sky People is alternate-history SF adventure at its best. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Download or read book Going to College written by Don Hossler and published by Galangpress Group. This book was released on 1999-01-05 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going to College tells the powerful story of how high school students make choices about postsecondary education. Drawing on their unprecedented nine-year study of high school students, the authors explore how students and their parents negotiate these important decisions. Family background, finances, education, information—all influence students' plans after high school and the career paths they pursue, as do the more subtle messages delivered by parents and counselors which shape adolescents' self-expectations. For high school guidance counselors, college admissions counselors, parents and teachers, and public policy makers, this book is a valuable resource that explains the decision-making process and helps adults to help students make appropriate choices. The authors identify predisposition, search, and choice as the three stages in the student decision-making process. Predisposition refers to the plans students develop for education or work after they graduate from high school. The search stage involves students discovering and evaluating a variety of colleges and universities. In the choice stage, students choose a school to attend from among a list of institutions that are being seriously considered. Understanding exactly how students move through the predisposition, search, and choice stages of the college decision-making process can help students and parents prepare themselves for this process and consider a wider array of options. For education professionals, understanding this process can lead to new initiatives to guide students and families effectively—by providing better incentives for college savings, for example, or devising more effective early information programs about postsecondary education. Going to College is the first book to seriously study over an extended period the decisions that have a pervasive and lasting impact on individual careers, livelihoods, and lifestyles. The authors conclude with important recommendations for improving academic support, exploring various financial options, providing early encouragement—in other words, for recognizing the factors that influence students' decisions, and knowing when to pay attention to them.
