Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second in a series of three volumes that survey the theory of theta functions, this volume emphasizes the special properties of the theta functions associated with compact Riemann surfaces and how they lead to solutions of the Korteweg-de-Vries equations as well as other non-linear differential equations of mathematical physics. It presents an explicit elementary construction of hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties and is a self-contained introduction to the theory of the Jacobians. It also ties together nineteenth-century discoveries due to Jacobi, Neumann, and Frobenius with recent discoveries of Gelfand, McKean, Moser, John Fay, and others.

Book excerpt: Pattern theory is a distinctive approach to the analysis of all forms of real-world signals. At its core is the design of a large variety of probabilistic models whose samples reproduce the look and feel of the real signals, their patterns, and their variability. Bayesian statistical inference then allows you to apply these models in the analysis o

Book excerpt: This book is an elementary self-contained introduction to some constructions of representation theory and related topics of differential geometry and analysis. Topics covered include the theory of various Fourier-like integral operators such as Segal-Bargmann transforms, Gaussian integral operators in $L^2$ and in the Fock space, integral operators with theta-kernels, the geometry of real and $p$-adic classical groups and symmetric spaces. The heart of the book is the Weil representation of the symplectic group (real and complex realizations, relations with theta-functions and modular forms, $p$-adic and adelic constructions) and representations in Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions of several complex variables. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers in representation theory, differential geometry, and operator theory. Prerequisites are standard university courses in linear algebra, functional analysis, and complex analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work has been a unique resource for thousands of mathematicians, scientists and engineers since its first appearance in 1902. Never out of print, its continuing value lies in its thorough and exhaustive treatment of special functions of mathematical physics and the analysis of differential equations from which they emerge. The book also is of historical value as it was the first book in English to introduce the then modern methods of complex analysis. This fifth edition preserves the style and content of the original, but it has been supplemented with more recent results and references where appropriate. All the formulas have been checked and many corrections made. A complete bibliographical search has been conducted to present the references in modern form for ease of use. A new foreword by Professor S.J. Patterson sketches the circumstances of the book's genesis and explains the reasons for its longevity. A welcome addition to any mathematician's bookshelf, this will allow a whole new generation to experience the beauty contained in this text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The monograph presents basically an arithmetic theory of orbital surfaces with cusp singularities. As main invariants orbital hights are introduced, not only for the surfaces but also for the components of orbital cycles. These invariants are rational numbers with nice functorial properties allowing precise formulas of Hurwitz type and a fine intersection theory for orbital cycles. For ball quotient surfaces they appear as volumes of fundamental domains. In the special case of Picard modular surfaces they are discovered by special value of Dirichlet L-series or higher Bernoulli numbers. As a central point of the monograph a general Proportionality Theorem in terms of orbital hights is proved. It yields a strong criterion to decide effectively whether a surface with given cycle supports a ball quotient structure being Kaehler-Einstein with negative constant holomorphic sectional curvature outside of this cycle. The theory is applied to the classification of Picard modular surfaces and to surfaces geography.

Book excerpt: This volume arises from the contributions presented at the MEGA 94 Con ference (Metodos Efectivos en Geomctria Algebraica = Effective Methods in Algebraic Geometry), held at the University of Cantabria (Santander, Spain) April 59, 1994. Previous sessions of this biannual conference had taken place in Castiglioncello (Livorno, Italy, 1990) and in Nice (France, 1992) and the cor responding proceedings have been published in the Birkhauser series Progress in Mathematics. volumes no. 94 and 109, respectively. The present collection consists of twenty articles involvillg miscellaneous topics concerning algorithms in algebra, algebraic geometry and related appli cations. Fourteen of these papers correspond to the contents of the Conference's regular scientific program and have been selected, by the MEGA Committee, from the submitted contributions after a very rigorous refereeing procedure entailing an average of three independent reports per paper and two Program Committee panel discussions before and after the Conference. The remaining six papers (by S. Beck & M. Kreuzer, M. Bronstein, E. V. Flvnn. 1. Itenberg, J.-P. Merlet and 1\1. Seppala) correspond to invited talks and have also been subject to a post-conference refereeing procedure.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of commutator methods in spectral and scattering theory has been known for a long time, and numerous interesting results have been ob tained by such methods. The reader may find a description and references in the books by Putnam [Pu], Reed-Simon [RS] and Baumgartel-Wollenberg [BW] for example. A new point of view emerged around 1979 with the work of E. Mourre in which the method of locally conjugate operators was introduced. His idea proved to be remarkably fruitful in establishing detailed spectral properties of N-body Hamiltonians. A problem that was considered extremely difficult be fore that time, the proof of the absence of a singularly continuous spectrum for such operators, was then solved in a rather straightforward manner (by E. Mourre himself for N = 3 and by P. Perry, 1. Sigal and B. Simon for general N). The Mourre estimate, which is the main input of the method, also has consequences concerning the behaviour of N-body systems at large times. A deeper study of such propagation properties allowed 1. Sigal and A. Soffer in 1985 to prove existence and completeness of wave operators for N-body systems with short range interactions without implicit conditions on the potentials (for N = 3, similar results were obtained before by means of purely time-dependent methods by V. Enss and by K. Sinha, M. Krishna and P. Muthuramalingam). Our interest in commutator methods was raised by the major achievements mentioned above.
