Book Synopsis Growing the Tree of Science by : Indira Chowdhury
Download or read book Growing the Tree of Science written by Indira Chowdhury and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a premier institute of science come into being? How does it foster a culture promoting free thinking and original research? What impact do the policies of a newly independent nation have on the way it functions? Exploring such themes and analysing the dissonances between institutional records and individual recollections, this book narrates the unique history of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. Acutely aware that a scientific temper had not been nurtured in colonial India, Cambridge-trained physicist Homi Bhabha, who later came to be known as the architect of India's atomic energy programme, wished to plant the tree of science on Indian soil. Thus was born TIFR on 19 December 1945. What followed were years of dynamic growth and struggle during which some of the best minds from across the world worked as well as taught at the institute. Using both archival documents and detailed interviews, Growing the Tree of Science blends history and memory to reinterpret institutional legacy by moving beyond Bhabha's individual efforts and bringing to light the role of younger scientists during the formative years of TIFR. In the process emerges a fascinating account in which personal connections, novel forms of philanthropy, art and architecture, and international training networks, all come together in creating a vibrant culture of science at TIFR.
Book Synopsis Abelian Varieties by : David Mumford
Download or read book Abelian Varieties written by David Mumford and published by Debolsillo. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprinting of the revised second edition (1974) of David Mumford's classic 1970 book. It gives a systematic account of the basic results about abelian varieties. It includes expositions of analytic methods applicable over the ground field of complex numbers, as well as of scheme-theoretic methods used to deal with inseparable isogenies when the ground field has positive characteristic. A self-contained proof of the existence of the dual abelian variety is given. The structure of the ring of endomorphisms of an abelian variety is discussed. These are appendices on Tate's theorem on endomorphisms of abelian varieties over finite fields (by C. P. Ramanujam) and on the Mordell-Weil theorem (by Yuri Manin). David Mumford was awarded the 2007 AMS Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition. According to the citation: ``Abelian Varieties ... remains the definitive account of the subject ... the classical theory is beautifully intertwined with the modern theory, in a way which sharply illuminates both ... [It] will remain for the foreseeable future a classic to which the reader returns over and over.''

Book Synopsis Millisecond Pulsars by : Sudip Bhattacharyya
Download or read book Millisecond Pulsars written by Sudip Bhattacharyya and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes nine chapters written by internationally recognized experts, covering all aspects of millisecond pulsars in one concise and cohesive volume. These aspects include pulsations powered by stellar spin, accretion and thermonuclear burning of accreted matter, their physics and utility, stellar evolution and the extreme physics of super-dense stellar cores. The book includes substantial background material as well as recent theoretical and multi-wavelength observational results. The volume will thus be useful for professional astronomers and graduate students alike. What is the behavior of the strong nuclear interaction, and what are the matter constituents at ultrahigh densities in neutron star cores? How do old neutron stars in binaries evolve? How does their magnetosphere interact with the surrounding plasma to accelerate particles and emit radiation observed at all wavelengths? These are just a few of the questions that millisecond pulsars are helping us answer and will settle in the near future with the next generation of instruments. Such quickly rotating, highly magnetized neutron stars are remarkable natural laboratories that allow us to investigate the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions under extreme conditions that cannot be reproduced in terrestrial laboratories.

Book Synopsis The Roots and Development of Particle Physics in India by : Sreerup Raychaudhuri
Download or read book The Roots and Development of Particle Physics in India written by Sreerup Raychaudhuri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book narrates the history of the initiation and development of elementary particle physics in India and by Indians, focusing on the first half of the twentieth century. The thread is taken up with the introduction of Western science into India in the previous century. The contents are a mixture of science and biographies, interspersed with anecdotes and reflections on the historical and societal connections. The style is generally non-technical, with any technical issues explained and interwoven into the narrative. This book is of interest to scientists, to people with interest in science and the history of science, students curious about the initiation of science in the Indian context and about the famous Indian scientists, as well as administrators who wish to understand the roots of current Indian science, especially in the context of particle physics.
Book Synopsis Motivic Aspects of Hodge Theory by : Chris Peters
Download or read book Motivic Aspects of Hodge Theory written by Chris Peters and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are based on a series of lectures given at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, in 2007, on the theme of Hodge theoretic motives associated to various geometric objects. Starting with the topological setting, the notes go on to Hodge theory and mixed Hodge theory on the cohomology of varieties. Degenerations, limiting mixed Hodge structures and the relation to singularities are addressed next. The original proof of Bittner's theorem on the Grothendieck group of varieties, with some applications, is presented as an appendix to one of the chapters. The situation of relative varieties is addressed next using the machinery of mixed Hodge modules. Chern classes for singular varieties are explained in the motivic setting using Bittner's approach, and their full functorial meaning is made apparent using mixed Hodge modules. An appendix explains the treatment of Hodge characteristic in relation with motivic integration and string theory. Throughout these notes, emphasis is placed on explaining concepts and giving examples.

Book excerpt: ISRO pioneer R. Aravamudan narrates the gripping story of the people who built India's space research programme and how they did it - from the rocket engineers who laid the foundation to the savvy young engineers who keep Indian spaceships flying today. It is the tale of an Indian organization that defied international bans and embargos, worked with laughably meagre resources, evolved its own technology and grew into a major space power. Today, ISRO creates, builds and launches gigantic rockets which carry the complex spacecraft that form the neural network not just of our own country but those of other countries too. This is a made-in-India story like no other.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Moduli Problems and Orbit Spaces by : P. E. Newstead
Download or read book Introduction to Moduli Problems and Orbit Spaces written by P. E. Newstead and published by Alpha Science International Limited. This book was released on 2012 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT), developed in the 1960s by David Mumford, is the theory of quotients by group actions in Algebraic Geometry. Its principal application is to the construction of various moduli spaces. Peter Newstead gave a series of lectures in 1975 at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai on GIT and its application to the moduli of vector bundles on curves. It was a masterful yet easy to follow exposition of important material, with clear proofs and many examples. The notes, published as a volume in the TIFR lecture notes series, became a classic, and generations of algebraic geometers working in these subjects got their basic introduction to this area through these lecture notes. Though continuously in demand, these lecture notes have been out of print for many years. The Tata Institute is happy to re-issue these notes in a new print.
