Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dragonflies and damselflies are conspicuous insects: many are large and brightly coloured. They are also valuable indicators of environmental wellbeing. A detailed knowledge of the dragonfly fauna is therefore an important basis for decisions about environmental protection and management. This comprehensive guide to the Australian dragonfly fauna covers eight families of dragonflies and 10 families of damselflies, comprising the 113 genera and 333 species found in Australia. It has been updated with newly identified species and revised family names to reflect new world consensus systematics. Stunning full-colour images and distribution maps are accompanied by identification keys for adults as well as larvae, which are often used as bait for freshwater fish. This second edition of The Complete Field Guide to Dragonflies of Australia also includes illustrations by Albert Orr, one of the most renowned dragonfly illustrators. The extraordinary diversity of dragonflies will interest entomologists and amateur naturalists alike.

Book excerpt: Echinoderms exploit nearly every marine habitat, from the shore to the abyss, often in great numbers. Some are of economic importance as predators of oysters and mussels. Heliocidaris erythrogramma was investigated for its potential as a source of sea urchin roe for export. The history of the study of Tasmanian echinoderms began with early colonial collections for cabinet specimens and continued through the work of H.L.Clark of Harvard, and early British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic expeditions. Recent work was carried out in Victoria by Pawson and Rowe and A.M. Clark and in Tasmania by V.V.Hickman and Alan Dartnall.

Book excerpt: Dragonflies are conspicuous insects. Many are large; they fly strongly; most are brightly coloured. As a result, they have been collected extensively. Their larvae are less familiar. 'Mud-eyes', as some are called, are drab, and almost all live in fresh waters, out of sight. They are, perhaps, best known as bait for freshwater fish. The dragonflies constitute a very distinct order of insects, the Odonata. In Australia, two suborders are represented: damselflies (Zygoptera), generally very slender insects, the fore- and hindwings similar in shape and venation and commonly held closed above the body at rest (Figs 46-63), the larvae with external gills on the end of the abdomen (Figs 4A-C, E); and dragonflies proper (Anisoptera), stouter, stronger-flying insects, the fore- and hindwings more or less dissimilar in shape and venation and commonly held spread at rest (Figs 64-101), the larvae with internal, rectal gills (see Chapter 2). Living representatives of the third suborder (Anisozygoptera) are confined to Japan and the Himalayas. The term 'dragonfly' is commonly applied to the entire order.

Book excerpt: This was the first comprehensive work on the Tasmanian non-marine molluscs in which every species is described and illustrated. This handbook is intended to provide field keys to the identification of land and freshwater molluscs in Tasmania and to make available in one volume a checklist, with illustrations, of that fauna. Species inhabiting the littoral fringe have been included as many localities where these can be found have the general appearance of being non-marine. It is a compilation, in abridged form, of the Tasmanian information in the FIELD GUIDE TO THE NON-MARINE MOLLUSCS OF SOUTH-EASTERN AUSTRALIA published by the same authors in 1979.

Book excerpt: Freshwater macroinvertebrates provide a useful and reliable indicator of the health of our rivers, streams, ponds and wetlands. As environmental awareness within the community increases, there is an increasing interest in the need to assess the health of our local waterways and school curriculums are changing to reflect this important ecological trend. The Waterbug Book provides a comprehensive and accurate identification guide for both professionals and non-professionals. It contains an easy-to-use key to all the macroinvertebrate groups and, for the first time, high quality colour photographs of live specimens. It provides a wealth of basic information on the biology of macroinvertebrates, and describes the SIGNAL method for assessing river health. The Waterbug Book is full of practical tips about where to find various animals, and what their presence can tell about their environment. Winner of the 2003 Eureka Science Book Prize and the 2003 Whitley Medal.

Book excerpt: Many of the native freshwater fish species are not well known to the general public whilst some of the introduced species are so familiar that they are occasionally mistakenly thought to be native to the state. The Tasmanian freshwater fish fauna consists of 25 species of native fish and a further 8 introduced species. At least 15 further species which are predominately marine or estuarine inhabitants, may be found some distance inland at certain times of the year. Some of these are more frequent invaders than others and the listing of species as freshwater is somewhat arbitrary. The lampreys are included in this and other fish guides by tradition, although they are not fishes in the strict sense.
