Book excerpt: Subjects were exposed to a 10-day habituation series of 200 CW accelerations in total darkness while performing attention-demanding tasks. Decelerations were subthreshold. Preliminary and post-tests indicated that slow-phase nystagmus and duration of the ocular response declined bidirectionally as a function of the habituation trials, but frequency of nystagmus increased during the stimulus period and for a few seconds thereafter. These changes were approximately equal for both CW and CCW stimulation. Measurements of subjective velocity were obtained during several preand post-trials but never during the habituation series. A decline in the intensity of the sensation to CW acceleration, but not to CCW stimulation, was produced by the habituation series. A second post-test given after one month with no intervening stimulation showed little or no restoration of nystagmus. However, the subjective reaction demonstrated a clear, albeit incomplete pattern of recovery. (Author).

Book excerpt: The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is easy to underrate the importance of a sensory system whose receptor is buried deep within the skull and of whose performance we are usually not aware. It is only when it malfunctions that we know we have a ves tibular system! Unraveling the mechanisms by which activation of the vestibular labyrinth exerts its varied effects presents a great challenge, which increasing numbers of investigators are rushing to meet. At this time a period of transition appears to have been reached. On the one hand, physiological and anatomical techniques have provided extensive information about the properties of the receptor and of some of the path ways that link it to the musculature. On the other hand, extensive be havioral and psychophysical studies provide different insights into the mechanisms involved in vestibular reflexes. Until recently there has been relatively 1ittle interaction between the practitioners of these two widely different approaches. It has been our goal to assess and describe the progress that has been made in both areas and, when possible, to make a synthesis of the results. As will be seen, numerous questions are raised in the process, and we hope that they will help in pointing the way to further investigations. We are grateful to the authors and publishers who gave permission to reproduce many of the figures, and to our colleagues who have read and commented on all or part of the manuscript. Victor J.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vestibular physiology has acquired new interest in the past few years. The development of fast aircraft, beginning during the Second World War and continuing through modern supersonic jets and space travel, has increased dramatically the acceleration range to which man is subjected, from prolonged weightlessness to several gs. The labyrinth measures all kinds of acceleration, including gravity. and therefore has taken on particular impor tance in the study of human health in the Space Age. It is understandable. then, that NASA sponsored the Symposium on Vestibular Function and Morphology. a satellite of the Eighth Annual Meeting of the Society of Neuroscience. held October 30-November 1. 1978, at the University of Pittsburgh, which also supported the symposium. The present volume was developed from papers originally presented there. My strategy in editing this book has been to focus upon the vestibular end organ and its direct connections. both peripheral and central, in order to as sure a coherent discussion of the basics of vestibular function, structure, and ultrastructure. Fortunately, it was possible to secure the contributions of a number of outstanding investigators from both the United States and abroad, including functionally oriented morphologists. ultrastructuralists, biophysicists, and vestibular physiologists. The result is a comprehensive discussion of the main mechanisms of the labyrinth: the transduction pro cess at the receptor level, in the semicircular canals, and in the utricular and saccular maculae; the information transfer through neuronal pathways to the nuclei and the cerebellum; and the general organization of the system.

Book excerpt: The invitation to contribute a volume to the series Studies in Brain Func tion offers me a welcome opportunity for a comprehensive presentation of my research on the eye movements of the rabbit, and for a review of the older results in the perspectives offered by the progress of my own work, but even more of the field in general. Characteristically this monograph em phasizes the views of the author, which may not always be generally accept ed. Although connections with the work by other investigators are discussed as much as possible, I have not attempted to be complete in reviewing all publications related to oculomotor function in the rabbit. While presenting an overview of current understanding of a system, it is always wise to trace the historical roots of our knowledge and concepts. On the one hand, we may find that many established concepts derive their strength more from convention and convenience than from rigorous evi dence. Such traditional ideas should be challenged by critical experiments, using the best available techniques. On the other hand, some of the older publications remain a source of inspiration, because they contain valid ideas which generate fruitful experiments even today. A remarkable example of this category is Ter Braak's work on optokinetic nystagmus, published in 1936.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two devices are described which facilitate measurement and analysis of nystagmus. One device requires manual alignment of a crosshair with the nystagmus slope. This process is much faster than unaided manual scoring because (1) the mechanical aid in slope measurement is very effective, (2) time measurement is virtually automatic, and (3) all steps after the crosshair alignment, including tabulation of digital information and plotting of analog information, are accomplished automatically. The second device is a standard recorder with plug-in units for area-summation and timed switching. It is less versatile than the first device, and is not equivalent to advanced electronic computation, but it does provide an immediate analog display and (with a digital voltmeter-printer) an immediate digital display of analyzed nystagmus. Additional operations performed on the output of these devices can provide estimates of the pi/delta time constant and other parameters. Topics discussed include sources of error in rapid processing of nystagmus and advantages of rapid processing for experimental purposes, for pilot evaluation, and for clinical application. (Author).
