Destined to be the king of the apes, Tarzan thrives among his adoptive family, but will he ever be able to feel at home in the wild? Tarzan of the Apes is the first book in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic pulp fiction series. Join Tarzan as he grows from a young, lost little boy into the powerful king of the jungle. As he ages and begins to realise the differences between himself and his family, Tarzan grows distant from the apes and begins to explore the jungle by himself. Discovering his parents’ old hut, he arms himself with his father’s knife and suddenly the animals of the jungle are no match for him. But as the powerful ape man conquers his wild home, he longs to connect with someone who truly understands him. When a group of humans are marooned in his jungle, will Tarzan finally reach a place he can call home? First published in October 1912 in the pulp magazine The All-Story, Tarzan of the Apes was released as a novel in 1914 and has had many successful screen adaptations. This volume is the perfect read for fans of fantasy novels who want to revisit a childhood classic.

Book excerpt: Tarzan of the Apes is a novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first in a series of books about the title character Tarzan. It was first published in the pulp magazine All-Story Magazine in October 1912. So popular was the character that Burroughs continued the series into the 1940s with two dozen sequels. For the novel's centennial anniversary, Library of America published a hardcover edition based on the original book in April 2012 with an introduction by Thomas Mallon. The novel tells the story of John Clayton III. John and Alice (Rutherford) Clayton II, Lord and Lady Greystoke of England, are marooned in the western coastal jungles of equatorial Africa in 1888. In September 1889 their son John Clayton III is born. At one year old his mother dies, and soon thereafter his father is killed by the savage king ape Kerchak. The infant is then adopted by the she-ape Kala.Clayton is named "Tarzan" ("White Skin" in the ape language) and raised in ignorance of his human heritage. As a boy, feeling alienated from his peers due to their physical differences, he discovers his true parents' cabin, where he first learns of others like himself in their books. Using basic primers with pictures, over many years he teaches himself to read English, but having never heard it, cannot speak it.Upon his return from one visit to the cabin, he is attacked by a huge gorilla which he manages to kill with his father's knife, although he is terribly wounded in the struggle. As he grows up, Tarzan becomes a skilled hunter.

Edgar Rice Burroughs desperately wanted to be a writer, but had run through a long list of miscellaneous jobs: railroad cop, storekeeper, gold prospector, lightbulb peddler, and even patent medicine hawker. One fateful day he was browsing through the classified ads in a pulp fiction magazine and had a revelation. Maybe he wasn't a greater writer, but he could certainly write as badly as those who got published in that magazine. He decided to put his fingers where his brain was and pounded out a manuscript for Tarzan of the Apes.

Now they were headed toward a fabled empire of riches which no outsider had ever seen, intent on looting. And toward the same legendary land was stumbling the lost James Blake, an American whom Tarzan had vowed to rescue. Following their spoors, the ape-man came upon the lost Valley of the Sepulcher, where Knights Templar still fought to resume their Holy Crusade to free Jerusalem. Soon Tarzan, true Lord of their ancient motherland, was armed with lance and shield, mixed into their jousting and ancient combat. It was then that the slavers struck!
