Book excerpt: Billy Cribbwas one of the greatest bare-knuckle fighters of his generation. Revealing an underground fight scene rarely glimpsed by those on the outside, "Tarmac Warrior" traces Billy's career from his first fights on the motorways around Britain to the cross-channel ferries which provided an arena for many of his early fights. It then follows Billy's move to Majorca, giving a frightening insight into the timeshare racketeering, extortion, and organized crime which lie under the surface of the popular holiday destination. Billy goes on to recount his move to the USA, where he sank deeper into the world of drugs and violence. He becomes a debt-collector for the Mafia and a star fighter in the Mafia-run fight syndicates of New York and the cult fight circuit in California. Years later he returned to Britain as a reformed drug addict who had found religion."

And she’s about to fight for her life. This is no mere storm. It’s a deluge of catastrophic proportions. Swollen by record rains and a ten-inch snowmelt, the Willamette River is hammering Portland, Oregon, with the flood of the century. In Chris McIntyre’s heart, a different kind of flood—a rising torrent of emotions—threatens to sweep her away from the community of Kimberly Square. Her newfound faith keeps her from running. But how can she stay? Her push-the-limits personality may have made her a perfect soldier, but it sets her apart from the people at her church. And it sets her at odds with Scott Mathis, the husband of her closest friend, Erin. Fearing for Erin’s safety, Scott resents his wife’s high-risk friendship with Chris. But when Scott and Chris are forced together to help Kimberly Square residents ride out the storm, a different, equally lethal danger descends on them. Death or redemption rest in the hands of one person—a woman with a warrior’s heart.

The best thing I can say about it is I didn't want it to end." --Col. David Hackworth, New York Times bestselling author of About Face By the spring of 1970, American troops were ordered to pull out of Vietnam. The Marines of 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel "Wild Bill" Drumright, were assigned to cover the withdrawal of 1st Marine Division. The Marines of 1st RECON Bn operated in teams of six or seven men. Heavily armed, the teams fought a multitude of bitter engagements with a numerically superior and increasingly aggressive enemy. Michael C. Hodgins served in Company C, 1st RECON Bn (Rein), as a platoon leader. In powerful, graphic prose, he chronicles his experience as a patrol leader in myriad combat situations--from hasty ambush to emergency extraction to prisoner snatch to combined-arms ambush. . . . "THIS MEMOIR IS GRIPPING." --American Way

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late-twentieth century has witnessed a particular prominence assigned to the discourses of “difference” and “Otherness”. An examination of this “othering” discourse as related to Travellers, Gypsies and Showpeople ennumerates the projective function of the “Othering” process, a form of rejection and marginalisation that is the institutionalization of ideas which are seldom challenged. The history of Traveller and Gypsy “Othering” in Europe points to the constant re-articulation of reductionist stereotypes as applied to a wide range of nomadic peoples and the creation of a mythic Traveller/Gypsy prototype that is based on a series of endlessly repeated generalizations which gradually assume the status of an objective “truth”. This discourse of representation has culminated in powerful institutional attitudes, many of which have influenced official and policy responses to these minorities. This volume brings to surface the “hidden histories” and discourses of the “peoples of the road”, those migratory peoples whose unique expressions of identity have often hitherto remained occluded. We live in the era of the Other, the era of “difference”, the era of migration - that “stranger” who waits silently at the border crossing, battered suitcase in hand. Travellers and Roma are the archetypal migrants. Perennial “outsiders”, they are the people who have lived on society’s margins for centuries. This volume explores the history of these traditionally migrant peoples within the frame of articulation that is Western literary and visual culture.

No real hard bastard needs to brag or bully; most are modest, thoughtful and quiet. They have nothing to prove, as opposed to wannabe tough guys, who may pump themselves full of steroids or devote themselves to the study of a martial art, but can they handle themselves during an aggressive confrontation? It is the real hard bastard's absolute willingness to fight literally anyone, his ability to be uncompromisingly violent, his complete lack of fear, and unwillingness to admit defeat that makes him stand out in a crowd. A real hard bastard exudes an unmistakable air of confidence and authority. The full list of Hard Men is: Geoff Thompson (Former British nightclub bouncer and world-famous martial artist. Now a BAFTA-award-winning writer); Thomas Silverstein (America's most dangerous prisoner); Arthur White (Once one of London's most notorious debt collectors. Now reformed and a Christian); Tom Taylor (A former US Presidential bodyguard); Don Murfet (Minder to the rock band Led Zeppelin); Charlie Bronson (Britain's most violent prisoner - also an artist and writer); Gary Alexander (Full-contact fighting champion of North America); Roy Shaw (British bare-knuckle fighting champion; Ali vs Tyson; Hard Bastards: what exactly are they?; Noel 'Razor' Smith (Former British gangster serving multiple life sentences); Street Kings & Bare-Knuckle Fighters (the toughest of them all); Mike Tyson (Boxer); The Krays (Britain's most infamous gangsters); Dave 'Boy' Green (British boxer); Luciano Leggio (Sicilian gangster); Bob Honiball (Martial arts expert currently training Eastern European special forces); Peter Rollack aka 'Pistol Pete' (New York City gang member); Gregory Peter John Smith (Australian bandit); John Brawn (Ireland's hardest man, martial artist and bouncer); William Coss (Just a regular US citizen put in an extreme situation); Mickey Francis (Manchester's most notorious football thug and gangster, now a professional wrestler); Jake LaMotta (Boxer); Vladimir Bogomolov (Soviet bodyguard); Big Joe Egan (Probably the hardest white man on the planet); Dennis Martin (Doorman, bodyguard and Liverpool's hardest man).
